Are any of you familiar with Louis Zamparini?
Louis Zamparini was an Olympic distance runner who shortly after going to the Olympics served in World War 2.
While he was serving his plane was shot down and crashed in the ocean; he spent 47 days drifting on a raft until he was found by a Japanese boat and ended up in a Japanese prison camp for 2 or 3 years.
and during those years he was treated awful and was often tortured more then others because at the time he was known throughout the world.
But when the US won the war he was released but had server post traumatic stress disorder because of all he had been threw
He was an alcoholic
Some nights he would actually wake up from his sleep and he would be choking his wife.
He would often catch himself drinking to much to take away the pain.
And at this point he was not a Christian but one night at a Billy Grahm revival He accepted Christ into His life.
And when He did this his life completely changed and by the grace of God he was delievered from his alcholism and his PTSD
Which I know that is not always the case
but something even more amazing happened because shortly after.
Louis Zamparini felt like God was calling Him to go back to Japan where he was tortured and forgive and minister to the people who tortured him.
and he did.
and it is really an amazing story.
but you can almost imagine how difficult it would have been for him to go and not just forgive the people who tortured him but to talk to them about Christ.
because these were people who ruined his life for a couple years and even caused him to suffer years after he was away from them.
and
These were people who caused him
But sometimes God calls us to do challenging things
Have you ever had God call you to do something that is just challenging?
For some it is a call to share the gospel with someone
For some it is to move away from things that are causing damage in our life that are not glorifying to God
For some it might be to even enter into a relationship with God.
but the reason I am brining this up is because God often calls us to do hard things that are outside our comfort zone.
and we are beginning our sermon series called “Jonah” this week and we are just going to be going through the book of Jonah and just to give you some background information on the story of Jonah
He often ask us to do things
In this book God is calling a man named Jonah who is a prophet to minister to this city called Nineveh
and Nineveh at this time was known to be this city that was just evil, it was known for terriosm, violence and
They would do all of these unspeakable things
But in the middle of all this violence like I said God calls Jonah to minister to Nineveh.
and Jonah has a hard time with this and instead of being obedient to where God calls Him He runs away from where God is calling him and really he trys to run away from God.
So we are going to be in
And I am excited because Jonah is often a book of the Bible we learn about as a little kid but then we never talk about it again.
But whats exciting is there is a ton in this book for us as adults as well.
so we are going to be unpacking this book for the next four weeks.
and as I mentioned we will be in today it says:
7 (NIV)
Jonah Flees From the Lord
1 The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: 2 “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”
(NIV)
Jonah Flees From the Lord
3 But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish.
He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port.
After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.
1 The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: 2 “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”
4 Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up.
5 All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god.
And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship.
3 But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish.
He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port.
After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord. 4 Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up.
5 All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god.
And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship.
But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.
6 The captain went to him and said, “How can you sleep?
Get up and call on your god!
Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish.”
7 Then the sailors said to each other, “Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity.”
They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.
8 So they asked him, “Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us?
What kind of work do you do?
Where do you come from?
What is your country?
From what people are you?”
9 He answered, “I am a Hebrew and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”
10 This terrified them and they asked, “What have you done?” (They knew he was running away from the Lord, because he had already told them so.)
11 The sea was getting rougher and rougher.
So they asked him, “What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?”
12 “Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” he replied, “and it will become calm.
I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.”
13 Instead, the men did their best to row back to land.
But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before.
14 Then they cried out to the Lord, “Please, Lord, do not let us die for taking this man’s life.
Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man, for you, Lord, have done as you pleased.” 15 Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm.
16 At this the men greatly feared the Lord, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows to him.
(NIV)
Jonah’s Prayer
So as we already talked about in this passage Jonah gets this call from God God wants Him to go to Nineveh
17 Now the Lord provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
So as we already talked about in this passage Jonah gets this call from God God wants Him to go to Nineveh
I want to pause right there because God is calling Jonah and like we already talked about God is calling every single one of us whether we are a Christian or not.
For some it is to move away from things that are causing damage in our life that are not glorifying to God
For some it might be to even enter into a relationship with God.
But God is constantly calling us to do something.
And in this story as I already mentioned is Jonah instead of following what God is asking him to do He actually guns it out of there and tries to get away from God by getting on a boat to get as far away as possible
and
and look what happens in verse 4 because verse 4 it says that a violent storm arises and this violent storm is so strong that the
Bible says it might break up the ship which means the ship is going to sink.
and the Bible says that the Lord sent this storm but the reason the Lord sent it is because Jonah was disobedient.
and when you look at the reasoning for why this storm is occuring Jonah admits that it is his fault in verse 12.
But if you look at why this storm is happening it is because Jonah
and really it is implied that it is because of Jonahs actions that the boat is going through the storm
because He was disobedient to God
The issue that occurs is when we do not obey that call in our life.
and really the first point I want you to get is that when we are disobedient to what God is asking us to do we invite a storm to enter into our lives.
and often times what happens is when we invite sin into our life
because when we do this and disobey God it really is a sin
Think about the
and the first point I want you to get is that when we disobey God (when we sin) we are inviting a storm to enter our lives.
