Unity In Motive
They settled there and began to build their city and tower to make a name for themselves. From their motive and from their actions it becomes clear that these “Shinarites” had immense pride—what one could call hubris. They had been commanded to spread out and fill the earth (9:7), but they came together and strengthened their identity. This was open rebellion against the command of God; more than that, it was independence from God. In the Bible, humility is often equated with trust and obedience, and pride with independence and disobedience. Here they came together to strengthen themselves with their building and to become famous. They were driven by the fear of being scattered and the pride of becoming famous. They tried to avoid the very thing God wanted; and the way they chose to avoid it would make them famous, but not as they thought.
