This morning I want to Begin Lumley’s 12 in the Gospel of John:
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

16 For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.
Learning Denver
This passage I have chosen to
I-70 and I-25 and I-70 and I-225...
Eventually learned the streets were numbered sequentially and alphabetically… Could really get to know the whole city and landscape of each part of the city.
When a kid I knew of I-70 — & Roman Road
When in college I learned of 1-25, I-270 & I-225 — Memorize
Great delight to see the whole landscape of the Bible — streets numbered and alphabetized. T
This is what this series is designed to do
“You gotta do this one”...
These important passages from John’s prologue helps to show us that and how all the roads go together and displace the beautiful “City of the Bible.”

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John begins his gospel quite differently than Matthew, Mark, or Luke.
John begins his gospel quite differently than Matthew, Mark, or Luke.
John uses a special category to introduce Jesus Christ to his hearers and readers:
Jesus Christ is the Word of God.
John begins his gospel by connecting it with the genesis of the Hebrew Scriptures:
John begins his gospel by connecting it with the genesis of the Hebrew Scriptures:
1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
What was happening on page 1, chapter 1, verse 1 in the OT is being continued and culminated in the Word of God, incarnated in Jesus Christ.

The Greek Word “logos” is being used by John in a couple of ways:

Jesus, as the Word of God, is rooted in the OT background.
In Creation:
6 By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
and by the breath of his mouth all their host.
In Deliverance:
20 He sent out his word and healed them,
and delivered them from their destruction.
In Power
3 The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the Lord, over many waters.
4 The voice of the Lord is powerful;
the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
6 He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf,
and Sirion like a young wild ox.
7 The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.
8 The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
9 The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth
and strips the forests bare,
and in his temple all cry, “Glory!”
Jesus, as the Word of God, is conveyed as the incarnation of the Word of God; John puts that squarely in the foreground of the NT.
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
The Word of God became flesh.
“If I could just make you understand”
As the speaker — if I could just make you (the listener) understand.
As the hearer — I sure wish this person could help me understand.
Few things are as challenging as saying something important.
For centuries, God has been saying important things. God wanted to clarify all God had said by incarnating God’s Word.
18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.
Jesus unpacks God similar to how addition unpacks multiplication… and how a picture unpacks addition
The Word “Tabernacled” Among Us
From to , that arc has come to be in our midst.
“Dwelt Among Us” — same Greek word associated with Tent.
“God pitched God’s Tent.”
OT reference to the Tent of Meeting where Moses would go to see the personal glory of God.
John says —
“Just as Moses saw God’s glory in the Tent, We have seen God’s glory as God has pitched the Tent of his glory in the flesh of His Son.”
The Word, Jesus, has the glory of the only Son of God.
Reminds us of the covenant God made with David.
12 When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men,
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
John 14:
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
The Word delivered Grace and Truth as Grace upon Grace...
16 For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
John 1:
Grace and Truth of the Law given through Moses
Grace and Truth of the Gospel given through Jesus
True today… we live from the fullness of the Son of God having received grace upon grace upon grace upon grace from God.
Everything, everyone, everywhere in our lives is the grace of God containing the Truth of God.
True of the blessings.
True of the disappointments.
The law has been a blessing and disappointment
Jesus has been a blessing and disappointment
2 corin 10:
9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
