Already conquered Bashan.
Balaam tries to curse.
Numbers 25:1 NKJV
Now Israel remained in Acacia Grove, and the people began to commit harlotry with the women of Moab.
Camped in Acacia Grove
place of idolatry
Baal Worship
Sexual
How did this harlotry start?
Numbers 25:1 NKJV
Now Israel remained in Acacia Grove, and the people began to commit harlotry with the women of Moab.
Numbers 25:2 NKJV
They invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods.
Why would they go?
Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

At Balaam’s suggestion, a grand festival in honor of their gods was appointed by the king of Moab, and it was secretly arranged that Balaam should induce the Israelites to attend. He was regarded by them as a prophet of God, and hence had little difficulty in accomplishing his purpose. Great numbers of the people joined him in witnessing the festivities. They ventured upon the forbidden ground, and were entangled in the snare of Satan.

How does Satan first open the door here?
Is the same thing happening today?
Innocent fun -> killing us?
Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

In every gathering for pleasure where pride is fostered or appetite indulged, where one is led to forget God and lose sight of eternal interests, there Satan is binding his chains about the soul.

Why did the temptation work so well?
Because they saw it as
completely innocent
fun.
Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

Beguiled with music and dancing, and allured by the beauty of heathen vestals, they cast off their fealty to Jehovah. As they united in mirth and feasting, indulgence in wine beclouded their senses and broke down the barriers of self-control. Passion had full sway; and having defiled their consciences by lewdness, they were persuaded to bow down to idols. They offered sacrifice upon heathen altars and participated in the most degrading rites.

Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

The rulers and the leading men were among the first to transgress, and so many of the people were guilty that the apostasy became national.

Numbers 25:3 NKJV
So Israel was joined to Baal of Peor, and the anger of the Lord was aroused against Israel.
Numbers 25:3 ESV
So Israel yoked himself to Baal of Peor. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel.
What does that mean?
Yoked to Baal of Peor?
Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

The rulers and the leading men were among the first to transgress, and so many of the people were guilty that the apostasy became national.

What does it mean?
Anger Aroused?
Plague Begins
Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

Their iniquitous practices did that for Israel which all the enchantments of Balaam could not do—they separated them from God.

What did Balaam do?
Why?
Couldn’t curse
obedient people
But can destroy
disobedient people
Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

The rulers and the leading men were among the first to transgress, and so many of the people were guilty that the apostasy became national.

Numbers 25:4 NKJV
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of the people and hang the offenders before the Lord, out in the sun, that the fierce anger of the Lord may turn away from Israel.”
What is commanded?
Why?
Stop the plague?
Appease God’s wrath?
Why the leaders?
not everyone?
Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

By swift-coming judgments the people were awakened to the enormity of their sin.

What is one reason why God brought swift punishment and retribution?
So they can see
how evil it is!
Numbers 25:5 NKJV
So Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Every one of you kill his men who were joined to Baal of Peor.”
Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

God commanded that the leaders in this apostasy be put to death

...
Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

The offenders were slain, then their bodies were hung up in sight of all Israel that the congregation, seeing the leaders so severely dealt with, might have a deep sense of God’s abhorrence of their sin and the terror of His wrath against them.

How do you feel about that?
Punishment for sin today???
Not same punishment
Any Punishment?
Church
not world
Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

All felt that the punishment was just, and the people hastened to the tabernacle, and with tears and deep humiliation confessed their sin.

Result of discipline?
Not repentance of offenders
Repentance of on-lookers!
What happens in the midst of this repentance?
Numbers 25:6 NKJV
And indeed, one of the children of Israel came and presented to his brethren a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping at the door of the tabernacle of meeting.
What were the people doing?
What is he doing?
What is his position?
Numbers 25:14–15 NKJV
Now the name of the Israelite who was killed, who was killed with the Midianite woman, was Zimri the son of Salu, a leader of a father’s house among the Simeonites. And the name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi the daughter of Zur; he was head of the people of a father’s house in Midian.
What had to be done?
Numbers 25:7–8 NKJV
Now when Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose from among the congregation and took a javelin in his hand; and he went after the man of Israel into the tent and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So the plague was stopped among the children of Israel.
Why was he so bold to do that?
Numbers 25:9 NKJV
And those who died in the plague were twenty-four thousand.
What was the result of this sin?
How does that apply to us today?
What did God think Phineas action?
Numbers 25:10–13 NKJV
Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: “Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned back My wrath from the children of Israel, because he was zealous with My zeal among them, so that I did not consume the children of Israel in My zeal. Therefore say, ‘Behold, I give to him My covenant of peace; and it shall be to him and his descendants after him a covenant of an everlasting priesthood, because he was zealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.’ ”
What did God think about Phineas?
Would he receive praise today for similar actions?
From People?
World?
Church?
From God?
What happens next?
Numbers 25:17–18 HCSB
“Attack the Midianites and strike them dead. For they attacked you with the treachery that they used against you in the Peor incident. They did the same in the case involving their sister Cozbi, daughter of the Midianite leader who was killed the day the plague came at Peor.”
Who do you think was sent in charge of the army?

Phinehas

Balaam also killed.
What happened when Balaam tried to curse them?
Nothing...
Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

When Balaam was called to curse the Hebrews he could not, by all his enchantments, bring evil upon them; for the Lord had not “beheld iniquity in Jacob,” neither had He “seen perverseness in Israel.”

Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

When Balaam was called to curse the Hebrews he could not, by all his enchantments, bring evil upon them;

Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

But when through yielding to temptation they transgressed God’s law, their defense departed from them.

What does that mean for us today?
… paragraph continues
Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

If those who profess to be the depositaries of God’s law become transgressors of its precepts, they separate themselves from God, and they will be unable to stand before their enemies.

Proverbs talks about
this destructive sin.
Proverbs 7:5 ESV
to keep you from the forbidden woman, from the adulteress with her smooth words.
Proverbs 7:5 NKJV
That they may keep you from the immoral woman, From the seductress who flatters with her words.
...
Proverbs 7:25–26 ESV
Let not your heart turn aside to her ways; do not stray into her paths, for many a victim has she laid low, and all her slain are a mighty throng.
Proverbs 7:25–26 NKJV
Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways, Do not stray into her paths; For she has cast down many wounded, And all who were slain by her were strong men.
The power of adultery. ..
Proverbs 7:25–26 ESV
Let not your heart turn aside to her ways; do not stray into her paths, for many a victim has she laid low, and all her slain are a mighty throng.
Can you think of any?

Solomon (the writer)
Proverbs 7:27 ESV
Her house is the way to Sheol, going down to the chambers of death.
Proverbs 7:27 NIV
Her house is a highway to the grave, leading down to the chambers of death.
1 Corinthians 10:11–12 ESV
Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.
Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

All along through the ages there are strewn wrecks of character that have been stranded upon the rocks of sensual indulgence.

Most successful temptation.
(continue quote)
Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

As we approach the close of time, as the people of God stand upon the borders of the heavenly Canaan

Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

He lays his snares for every soul.

Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

And he employs the same agents now as he employed three thousand years ago.

Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

he tempts to the violation of the seventh commandment.

Why does Satan love sexual sin?
Most important Quote
Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

Sensual indulgence weakens the mind and debases the soul. The moral and intellectual powers are benumbed and paralyzed by the gratification of the animal propensities; and it is impossible for the slave of passion to realize the sacred obligation of the law of God, to appreciate the atonement, or to place a right value upon the soul.

What does sexual sin do to the mind and character?
Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

Goodness, purity, and truth, reverence for God, and love for sacred things—all those holy affections and noble desires that link men with the heavenly world—are consumed in the fires of lust. The soul becomes a blackened and desolate waste, the habitation of the evil spirits, and the “cage of every unclean and hateful bird.” Beings formed in the image of God are dragged down to a level with the brutes.

Paul talking of
sexual sin
in the church
says:
2 Corinthians 6:17 NKJV
Therefore “Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you.”
Did you notice conditional?
To be received?
What does God expect from us today?
How can we know when/how to mingle with worldly people?
Confession
How does Satan keep getting us on the same points?
Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

Ease and self-indulgence left the citadel of the soul unguarded, and debasing thoughts found entrance.

Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

It was the traitors within the walls that overthrew the strongholds of principle and betrayed Israel into the power of Satan.

Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

A long preparatory process, unknown to the world, goes on in the heart before the Christian commits open sin.

Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

It takes time to degrade those formed in the image of God to the brutal or the satanic.

Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

By the indulgence of impure thoughts man can so educate his mind that sin which he once loathed will become pleasant to him.

But the opposite is also true...
We can train the mind to become more offended by evil every day...
What are most of your friends going to think about that?
Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

Yet we have a work to do to resist temptation. Those who would not fall a prey to Satan’s devices must guard well the avenues of the soul

What avenues?
Senses
eyes
ears
1 Peter 1:13–16 ESV
Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
What is the life of a Christian like?
Continually choosing Jesus instead of the world.
Proverbs 5:3–5 NKJV
For the lips of an immoral woman drip honey, And her mouth is smoother than oil; But in the end she is bitter as wormwood, Sharp as a two-edged sword. Her feet go down to death, Her steps lay hold of hell.
Proverbs 5:8–11 HCSB
Keep your way far from her. Don’t go near the door of her house. Otherwise, you will give up your vitality to others and your years to someone cruel; strangers will drain your resources, and your earnings will end up in a foreigner’s house. At the end of your life, you will lament when your physical body has been consumed,
Proverbs 2:18–19 ESV
for her house sinks down to death, and her paths to the departed; none who go to her come back, nor do they regain the paths of life.
Proverbs 5:15–20 HCSB
Drink water from your own cistern, water flowing from your own well. Should your springs flow in the streets, streams of water in the public squares? They should be for you alone and not for you to share with strangers. Let your fountain be blessed, and take pleasure in the wife of your youth. A loving doe, a graceful fawn— let her breasts always satisfy you; be lost in her love forever. Why, my son, would you be infatuated with a forbidden woman or embrace the breast of a stranger?
Proverbs 9:17–18 NKJV
“Stolen water is sweet, And bread eaten in secret is pleasant.” But he does not know that the dead are there, That her guests are in the depths of hell.
Secret sin is fun
for a season.
But what is the sure result?
In that day,
you needed a prostitute.
to sin with.
What does Jesus say
Matthew 5:28 HCSB
But I tell you, everyone who looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
