Introduction:
Introduction:
-I see this arrogant objection from men now concerning the rise of feminism.
-Most men don’t realize that in part the rise of feminism is related to two things
Part of woman’s curse in the garden is that she will lust after and pursue headship in the home and in the church
Man’s gross misinterpretation of the role of women in society.
-Men have since the beginning of time put their foot in the necks of women and treated them not as fellow heirs, but as servants, eye candy, or as children. This current feminism that you see now is an aggressive reaction to years of abuse in the work place, home and religious arena.
-I saw this meme that put it real well:
a. 1st wave feminisn-We want to be equal to men
b. 2nd wave feminism-We don’t need men
c. 3rd wave feminism-We are men
-The Bible is the best place to see the proper place for gender roles rather than the world. Today I have story that does a wonderful job of showing you the value of Outstanding Women and their contribution to Kingdom work.
1 Then the sons of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord, after Ehud died. 2 And the Lord sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor; and the commander of his army was Sisera, who lived in Harosheth-hagoyim. 3 The sons of Israel cried to the Lord; for he had nine hundred iron chariots, and he oppressed the sons of Israel severely for twenty years. 4 Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel at that time. 5 She used to sit under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim; and the sons of Israel came up to her for judgment. 6 Now she sent and summoned Barak the son of Abinoam from Kedesh-naphtali, and said to him, “Behold, the Lord, the God of Israel, has commanded, ‘Go and march to Mount Tabor, and take with you ten thousand men from the sons of Naphtali and from the sons of Zebulun. 7 ‘I will draw out to you Sisera, the commander of Jabin’s army, with his chariots and his many troops to the river Kishon, and I will give him into your hand.’ ” 8 Then Barak said to her, “If you will go with me, then I will go; but if you will not go with me, I will not go.” 9 She said, “I will surely go with you; nevertheless, the honor shall not be yours on the journey that you are about to take, for the Lord will sell Sisera into the hands of a woman.” Then Deborah arose and went with Barak to Kedesh. 10 Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali together to Kedesh, and ten thousand men went up with him; Deborah also went up with him. 11 Now Heber the Kenite had separated himself from the Kenites, from the sons of Hobab the father-in-law of Moses, and had pitched his tent as far away as the oak in Zaanannim, which is near Kedesh. 12 Then they told Sisera that Barak the son of Abinoam had gone up to Mount Tabor. 13 Sisera called together all his chariots, nine hundred iron chariots, and all the people who were with him, from Harosheth-hagoyim to the river Kishon. 14 Deborah said to Barak, “Arise! For this is the day in which the Lord has given Sisera into your hands; behold, the Lord has gone out before you.” So Barak went down from Mount Tabor with ten thousand men following him. 15 The Lord routed Sisera and all his chariots and all his army with the edge of the sword before Barak; and Sisera alighted from his chariot and fled away on foot. 16 But Barak pursued the chariots and the army as far as Harosheth-hagoyim, and all the army of Sisera fell by the edge of the sword; not even one was left. 17 Now Sisera fled away on foot to the tent of Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite, for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite. 18 Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said to him, “Turn aside, my master, turn aside to me! Do not be afraid.” And he turned aside to her into the tent, and she covered him with a rug. 19 He said to her, “Please give me a little water to drink, for I am thirsty.” So she opened a bottle of milk and gave him a drink; then she covered him. 20 He said to her, “Stand in the doorway of the tent, and it shall be if anyone comes and inquires of you, and says, ‘Is there anyone here?’ that you shall say, ‘No.’ ” 21 But Jael, Heber’s wife, took a tent peg and seized a hammer in her hand, and went secretly to him and drove the peg into his temple, and it went through into the ground; for he was sound asleep and exhausted. So he died. 22 And behold, as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him and said to him, “Come, and I will show you the man whom you are seeking.” And he entered with her, and behold Sisera was lying dead with the tent peg in his temple. 23 So God subdued on that day Jabin the king of Canaan before the sons of Israel. 24 The hand of the sons of Israel pressed heavier and heavier upon Jabin the king of Canaan, until they had destroyed Jabin the king of Canaan.
What are some of characteristics of Outstanding Women found in the text?
I. Outstanding women hear from the Lord

4 Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel at that time. 5 She used to sit under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim; and the sons of Israel came up to her for judgment. 6 Now she sent and summoned Barak the son of Abinoam from Kedesh-naphtali, and said to him, “Behold, the Lord, the God of Israel, has commanded, ‘Go and march to Mount Tabor, and take with you ten thousand men from the sons of Naphtali and from the sons of Zebulun.
judges 4:4-
(v.4) Deborah was wise and well respected this is seen by (v.4) and her respective position in a patriarchal society…Meaning a male dominated society.
a. A prophet---OT prophet were spokesmen for the Lord. She was the vessel through whom the Lord communicated his will for the people too.
b. A Judge---a judge was both Civil, & Spiritual. Their expressed purpose was to solve disputes and if necessary lead the troops into battle.
How did Deborah rise to such a high level of leadership in the country? was it out of necessity or was she just that good?
(v.4) Deborah is one of five female prophets in the OT: Miriam, Huldah, Noadiah and “The prophetess”(Nameless)
(v.4) Deborah is also the only female judge.
-This tells us that Deborah was a gifted, wise and mature woman. She holds two position that where generally reserved for men.
-Was it out of necessity?
(HELP ON ALL OF THESE SCRIPTURES)
9 When the sons of Israel cried to the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer for the sons of Israel to deliver them, Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.
15 But when the sons of Israel cried to the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer for them, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a left-handed man. And the sons of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab.
3 The sons of Israel cried to the Lord; for he had nine hundred iron chariots, and he oppressed the sons of Israel severely for twenty years. 4 Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel at that time.
judges 4:3-4
11 Then the angel of the Lord came and sat under the oak that was in Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite as his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the wine press in order to save it from the Midianites. 12 The angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, “The Lord is with you, O valiant warrior.” 13 Then Gideon said to him, “O my lord, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all His miracles which our fathers told us about, saying, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the Lord has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian.” 14 The Lord looked at him and said, “Go in this your strength and deliver Israel from the hand of Midian. Have I not sent you?”
-You will notice a pattern from the calling of each of the men in the story. The narrator was specific in his point that each was raised up by God for the expressed purpose of destroying Israel current enemy, but with Deborah it simply says “was judging Israel at the time”
-This pattern has lead many students of the word to conclude that Deborah lead out of necessity and God honored her.
-I am going to leave this question open. The text does not explicitly give the answer to this. My position is that she became a judge out of both necessity and ability.
4 Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel at that time. 5 She used to sit under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim; and the sons of Israel came up to her for judgment. 6 Now she sent and summoned Barak the son of Abinoam from Kedesh-naphtali, and said to him, “Behold, the Lord, the God of Israel, has commanded, ‘Go and march to Mount Tabor, and take with you ten thousand men from the sons of Naphtali and from the sons of Zebulun.
judges 4:
(v.4-6) At the bear minimum we can surmise by this text: Deborah was the spiritual & civil leader of the whole country. Notice the parenthetical statement in (v.5) “she used to sit under the palm tree of Deborah” Her sit of authority was so known that they named a tree after her. Her court room was underneath a palm tree. She was located in Ephraim which was centrally located so that all of Israel at that time could come to her so that she could render judgement.
Application
Outstanding women are well respected for their wisdom knowledge and discernment.
Wisdom, Knowledge and discernment comes for a woman that has spent some time with the Lord
II. Outstanding Women speak the Truth of God’s word
II. Outstanding Women speak the Truth of God’s word
(v.6) “Behold, the Lord, the God of Israel has commanded” Do you see the text. She understood that she is a vessel and that she responsible to say exactly what the Lord God had instructed her to say. She did not add to his word and she did not take away from his word.
(v.6) Deborah called Barak and told him that he is to lead 10000 men against Sisera..She told him the tribes from which to get the men; Zebulon and Naphtali. She also told him the battle plan that the Lord had given to her in (v.7) “He says I am going to draw Sisera out to the Kishon river to fight you by the river bed.”
(v.7) “and I will give him into your hand” Notice the promise the battle is already won.
Observation: the lack of leadership and courage from the men
8 Then Barak said to her, “If you will go with me, then I will go; but if you will not go with me, I will not go.” 9 She said, “I will surely go with you; nevertheless, the honor shall not be yours on the journey that you are about to take, for the Lord will sell Sisera into the hands of a woman.” Then Deborah arose and went with Barak to Kedesh.
judges 4:8
(v.8) Barak basically asked Deborah to hold his hand as he goes out to battle. He felt like he needed her presence to solidify the victory. But notice the previous verse (v.7) “and I will give him(Sisera) in your hand(Barak)” The Lord prophetically told Deborah to tell Barak that I am going to give Sisera into your hand. Yet he still needed Deborah to walk with him.
(v.9) Deborah tells him I am going to go: Nevertheless(But) “the honor shall not be yours on the journey you are about to take, for the Lord will sell Sisera into the hands of a woman” Now this is interesting, let me rephrase: Since you refuse to walk in your God ordained role I am going to raise up a woman to finish what you did not!!!
(v.9) Take notice that in (v.8) Deborah gives the original prophecy about the battle, but when Barak ask her to hold his hands Deborah got word from God again and told him that he would not finish off Sisera like she original told him. Deborah both times told Barak the truth without any sugar.
-It is easy to prophecy good things but it is often hard to prophecy tough truths. Deborah proved her worth by being able to prophecy the full council of God.
Michelle White at the meeting of her Christian School and standing on the truth of God’s word.
Application
Outstanding women speak God’s truth in season and out of season
Outstanding women are able to boldly proclaim truth when it is not popular, even to a man......Sidenote: Boldly is not disrespectful.
III. Outstanding Women understand that submission does not mean weakness
III. Outstanding Women understand that submission does not mean weakness
4 Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel at that time.
judges 4:
(v.4) This small sentence tells us a lot. The Narrator is careful to mention her husband. This conveys the idea that despite her career she is well aware of her covenant relationship to her husband and knows that God has called the Husband to lead the home. If you read the other stories about the Judges their wives are not mentioned for the most part. But her Husband is mentioned to communicate that she is married and has harmony in her home.
Let me show you in action her maturity related to being able to stand down or submit to leadership
10 Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali together to Kedesh, and ten thousand men went up with him; Deborah also went up with him.
judges 4:6-
(v.6) She called for Barak as the General of the Army and told him what the Lord said. She did not direct him she is simply the messenger. She understood that for the spiritual health of Israel it is important for this man Barak to lead them into Battle. Also of note the Lord could have sent Deborah into battle. He did with Gideon in the next chapter and Gideon was a cupcake. So God could have empowered Deborah to go into battle but he did not. Deborah was not in competition to out-do Barak. She was encouraging him to walk in his God ordained role of authority.
(v.9) When she agreed to go her tone and temper is more like a mother who is holding the hand of her son who is scared to go into his first day of school. She agrees to go, but her objective is that Israel would grow strong particularly the males in that society.
Sister Fleda.....always tells me that in church I lead out of necessity, and that my greatest joy would be to see man to walk in their Ordained role in the local church.
Application
Outstanding women know how to exercise their leadership gifts within the context of male lead entities ie the church & the family.
Outstanding women desire to see men operate in their God ordained roles
IV. Outstanding Women Discern the movement of God
IV. Outstanding Women Discern the movement of God
14 Deborah said to Barak, “Arise! For this is the day in which the Lord has given Sisera into your hands; behold, the Lord has gone out before you.” So Barak went down from Mount Tabor with ten thousand men following him.
(v.14) Look at the text:
a. Get up---Arise---Deborah tells Barak to get up. She is attuned to the timing of God
b.Listen---- She understood what to say at the right time: “For this is the day in which the Lord has given Sisera into your hands”
c. Believe---She was woman of faith: “The Lord has gone out before you” Deborah did not see this. This is something she believed by faith.
(v.14) Can you see the confidence dripping off her lips. Time to get up Barak This is the day that the Lord has made now let’s go out there and reclaim what this enemy of God has taken, and don’t worry God has already fought your battle.
(v.14) Deborah Faith and Trust in God gave confidence to Barak and the troops notice (v.15)
15 The Lord routed Sisera and all his chariots and all his army with the edge of the sword before Barak; and Sisera alighted from his chariot and fled away on foot.
(v.15) The Grammar of this text is complicated. Did the Lord route them with the sword or did Barak.
What part did the Lord Play?
-The Narrator is clear that this is a work of the Lord “The Lord routed Sisera and all his Chariots and all his army”
-The Answer is found in Chapter 5. Chapter 5 is a song to celebrate the victory of Chapter 4
judges 5:
20 The stars fought from the heavens; the stars fought with Sisera from their paths. 21 The river Kishon swept them away, the ancient river, the river Kishon. March on, my soul, in strength! 22 The horses’ hooves then hammered— the galloping, galloping of his stallions.
(v.20) Deborah the writer of the song is saying that the stars of heaven played a part in this victory.
(v.21) They did this by causing a supernatural current from this river. In this area they had rainy season and dry season.
7 ‘I will draw out to you Sisera, the commander of Jabin’s army, with his chariots and his many troops to the river Kishon, and I will give him into your hand.’ ”
-Listen to the Lord say “He will draw them out” Now how did he do this. Normally a battle commander would never take chariots near water. Chariots need a nice flat dry ground to advance. But due to the fact that it was dry season the ground by the River was nice and flat so Sisera figured we can break protocol and fight them by the river, well here comes our Supernatural God who lured them into a trap.
Sidenote: You can’t beat a person who controls all the Natural processes in the Cosmos. If he wants it to rain buckets it will rain, If he wants it to be 110 degrees he can do it, If he wants it to be a famine he can do it, if he wants it to rain 40 days and 40 nights he can do it.
15 The Lord routed Sisera and all his chariots and all his army with the edge of the sword before Barak; and Sisera alighted from his chariot and fled away on foot.
judges 4:
(v.15) So it was the Lord who cause this Supernatural Current that sweep up the chariots and cause chaos and Barak was there with his army to strike all those chariot riders. But notice Sisera the Canaanite General got away.
Gyrlene Page telling me that I am going to come back home and be the preacher at MBC
Application
Discernment is not women’s intuition. Discernment is the ability to distinguish the natural from the supernatural and them decide accordingly. Outstanding Woman are able to use this ability to protect and advance the kingdom of God.
Transition Statement: Finally Outstanding Women have their priorities straight
VI. Outstanding women first allegiance is too Christ

Do not be afraid.” And he turned aside to her into the tent, and she covered him with a rug.
judges 4:17-
Judges 4:
(v.17) Sisera was on the run and found refuge in the Tent of this unsuspected woman. Her name is Jael and she is the wife of Heber the Kenite.
Who is Heber the Kenite?
11 Now Heber the Kenite had separated himself from the Kenites, from the sons of Hobab the father-in-law of Moses, and had pitched his tent as far away as the oak in Zaanannim, which is near Kedesh.
(v.11) the Narrator wants us to know about this guy Heber specifically. Heber was a Kenite. These are Moses father in law people.
(HELP)
(HELP)
16 The descendants of the Kenite, Moses’ father-in-law, went up from the city of palms with the sons of Judah, to the wilderness of Judah which is in the south of Arad; and they went and lived with the people.
(v.16) You will notice that Moses father-in-law people rolled with the Children of Israel and they had favorable relationship with them. We would call them proselytes, which are gentile worshippers of Yahweh.
17 Now Sisera fled away on foot to the tent of Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite, for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite.
(v.17) Old Heber said I am not trying to be a part of the losing team, I am an opportunist I want to help the winning team, so he made and alliance with Jabin the King of Hazor. This Alliance probably came with the promise of information about the movement of Israel troops.

(v.18)
(v.18) Watch this cunning woman. She went out to meet him. Meaning that she saw him running from a far off. She flag him down and told him to come into her tent for cover. She convinced him that she is an ally. She comforted him and then she covered him up in the tent
19 He said to her, “Please give me a little water to drink, for I am thirsty.” So she opened a bottle of milk and gave him a drink; then she covered him.
(v.19) Sisera was tired so he asked for a little water to drink. He was probably just looking to refresh so that he could get back to Canaanite territory. Instead of water she gave him Milk. But the text in Chapter 5 is even more specific.
24 “Most blessed of women is Jael, The wife of Heber the Kenite; Most blessed is she of women in the tent. 25 “He asked for water and she gave him milk; In a magnificent bowl she brought him curds.
judges 5:
(v.25) Notice the grammar of the text. He asked for milk and she gave him milk. The way this is worded implies that this was a strategic move by her. And then she gave it to him in a bowl of honor. Notice she said that she gave him milk then she says she brought him curds. The Curds is more specific. She gave Sisera a bowl of yogurt.
19 He said to her, “Please give me a little water to drink, for I am thirsty.” So she opened a bottle of milk and gave him a drink; then she covered him.
judges 4:19
(v.19) Jael was trying to get him to relax..You know what happens after you are tired and you get a little food on your stomach, and she covered him with a blanket. Sisera started to get sleepy.
So he died.
Judges 4:
(v.20) Sisera thinking that she is an ally asked her to keep watch for him and tell anyone that comes I am not here.
(v.21) “But Jael, Heber’s wife” now why did the Narrator mention Heber again. We already know that they are married. I think he did this to magnify the tremendous courage she displayed in going against her husband. In these time wives generally did not disobey their husband. Also you have to understand that by going against her husband now during war for which he was a spy as soon as the Israelites got a hold of him he would be dead. Look what she did!!!!!!!!!
(v.21) She waited to he was snoring from that full stomach and then she snuck in the tent grab a tent peg, then she grab a mallet and then took that peg and drove it through his skull while he was sleeping. “You go girl” this fulfilled the prophecy of Deborah in verse (v.9)
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update Chapter 4
“I will surely go with you; nevertheless, the honor shall not be yours on the journey that you are about to take, for the LORD will sell Sisera into the hands of a woman.”
(v.21) Could have used a man to do this but he purposefully told Barak that I am going to use a woman to finish off Sisera. This was so powerful that we are still talking about this woman now. And she has a verse in judges 5:24-27
24 “Most blessed of women is Jael, The wife of Heber the Kenite; Most blessed is she of women in the tent. 25 “He asked for water and she gave him milk; In a magnificent bowl she brought him curds. 26 “She reached out her hand for the tent peg, And her right hand for the workmen’s hammer. Then she struck Sisera, she smashed his head; And she shattered and pierced his temple. 27 “Between her feet he bowed, he fell, he lay; Between her feet he bowed, he fell; Where he bowed, there he fell dead.
(v.24) Notice who Deborah talks about this Gentile woman who chose Yahweh over her own husband. “Most blessed of women is Jael, The wife of Heber the Kenite; Most blessed is she of women in the tent”
-When faced with the choice of her husband and Yahweh the covenant keeping God of Israel she chose Yahweh. And do you see how violently and decisively she dealt with an enemy of God. Don’t forget her husband chose to leave the Israelite camp, so she had spent enough time with the Israelites to know that I would rather choose the God’s of Israel over the God’s of the Canaanites. “She says, I love you Heber but I am about to handle this Canaanite Dawg, because he is coming against the Armies of the Lord” She says “I chose God” “I Know this decision is probably going to mess of your alliance with Jabin, but I am going to do what’s right”
Finale
22 And behold, as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him and said to him, “Come, and I will show you the man whom you are seeking.” And he entered with her, and behold Sisera was lying dead with the tent peg in his temple. 23 So God subdued on that day Jabin the king of Canaan before the sons of Israel. 24 The hand of the sons of Israel pressed heavier and heavier upon Jabin the king of Canaan, until they had destroyed Jabin the king of Canaan.
