“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!
“...How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!”
It seems like the most unlikely scripture to speak about for Mother’s Day, yet, is it not in our Lord’s character itself that we find the true heart of a mother.
I do not believe it is by chance that the Lord speaks this way.
God has put in the nature of a mom, the tenderness and grace of God that He has for His own children!
Yes, we may be broken, sinful, creatures, without at times natural love, as is evidenced in the news!
But, God is not willing that we float in the sea of despair, but rise to the place of forgiveness and restitution, when it comes to our natural relations!
And still uses motherhood as an ever present example of His goodness toward us!
Before I go one step further in this message, I need to say this-
If you have un-forgiveness toward your mother, for what ever reason, you cannot justify it before God!
You must forgive!
Because, that is what Jesus did for us, and continues to do!
Jesus, although speaking prophetically here, displays once again, in language undeniably tender, the true desire of a mother’s heart!
I. She sees the danger and protects.
I. She sees the danger and protects.
Jesus had spent the day in the Temple, Chastising the religious rulers, teaching the people, and prophesying about future events.
But right in the middle of all this He shows tenderness.
His concern for the lost was always evident wherever He went.
He, knowing their fate, and the danger that awaited them, approached them as tenderly and lovingly as only a mother could!
God has put in the heart of a mother an intrinsic bond with her children.
She can see what her children cannot.
It’s an opportunity to
She moves toward them with shield and sword, ready to put herself between her own and the fiercest of foes.
She displays the wisdom and tenacity of God.
II. She persists even when she is rejected.
II. She persists even when she is rejected.
She is never deterred by rejection.
She may be heart stricken and saddened by this, but she will not relent.
When we (the saved) as God’s children reject His advice in anyway, does He stop loving us?
Does He not come after us with more concern and passion for our waywardness?
David expresses it this way for us:
Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.
If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.
As I think back to my own immature ways as a young man, i remember the feelings of mom’s pestering me.
I see the reaction in my own children when mom is relentless with her advice and questioning.
But, we must all grow up.
Because if we do not maturely receive the persistence of a mother’s concern, how will we receive the same from God?
How will we bend to His unchangeable Word?
How will we learn and develop in the faith?
III. She does everything out of love for you.
III. She does everything out of love for you.
III. She never stops pursuing, because her love never fails.
III. She never stops pursuing, because her love never fails.
Like the savior’s love for us, the pure love of a mother is anything but self-serving!
She does all for her own, even at her own expense.
She seeks wool and flax, And willingly works with her hands. She is like the merchant ships, She brings her food from afar. She also rises while it is yet night, And provides food for her household, And a portion for her maidservants. She considers a field and buys it; From her profits she plants a vineyard. She girds herself with strength, And strengthens her arms. She perceives that her merchandise is good, And her lamp does not go out by night.
Prov. 31:10
She does all this because she was created for all this.
And does it all, that we would know the great love that the Savior has for us, that we would not perish but have everlasting life!
Her
If we recognize her love, shouldn’t we also recognize God’s love?
