1 Corinthians 1:4
Thursday was a little tense around our house.
My mom had surgery Thursday morning and Amy and I went to Springfield.
Surgery was done at 11:30.
My mom was in recovery.
My dad had a Doctors appointment at 12:50 and so Amy and I sit in the waiting room with my mom.
My sister took her lunch break to come visit my mom and we saw her for a few minutes.
Amy and I rotated getting some lunch and sitting in the waiting room.
My mother was in recovery and waiting for a hospital room.
Amy ran to pick Macy up some ball pants for the game that night.
I sat with mom and dad.
Amy had a doctors appointment at 2:30.
Adam was picking up Kylie from school for us at 3:40.
We had to find a way to get Macy and Colten from School of the Ozarks and get their baseball stuff from the house and then get to the ball park by 5:15.
It was 3:00 and Amy’s appointment was not done and Mom did not have a room.

I tried 3 times to see my mom and it did not work out.
By 3:30 my mom was being moved to a room and we were in route back to Rockaway to make it to the ball park by 5:15.
We got Kylie from Adam and Amy’s mom ran to get Macy and Colten for us.
We all met at the ball park at about 5:00 it was a miracle!
Needless to say I was exhausted.
The games got cancelled and we went to get some dinner.
Another miracle happened that night my kids got along.
Normally after school is over they fight!
I mean they throw down.
This day started off that way.
It all of the sudden took a turn when one of the kids started to describe the rough day they had at school and how they were being picked on.
I wish you could have been there because my kids heard the details of what had happened and they started to band together.
They were being so nice to each other because they felt as though the attack was coming from the outside.
I learned that night that they might each other every day but let someone from the outside attack their sibling and they band together so tight.
The City
Last week we talked a little bit about the city of Corinth.
If you recall to be called “a Corinthian” was a major insult because of the reputation that it carried.
This city was an economic hub city.
There were trade routes that led North, South, East, and West.
It was a city that was full of promiscuity and philosophical arguments.
The Church
The church was a mess.
The culture of the city had influenced the church.
The church struggled with what they believed.
The church had different schools of thoughts and this created division.
The church lacked discipline.
Many ungodly things are taking place within the church.
Paul
Paul is writing this letter to the church of Corinth.
Who was Paul before Christ?
Paul hated the church.
He persecuted and hated on followers of Christ.
Paul being changed by Jesus reminds us all that Jesus desires to save the worst of Sinners and that no one is beyond His grace.
1 Corinthians 4:4
The church is a mess and things that go against Jesus are happening.
Paul writes to them and says I thank my God for you
Why does he thank God for them?
He thanks God for them because of God’s grace that is given to them in Christ Jesus.
Paul does not thank God for them because of them.
He thanks God for them because of the grace that has been given to them in Christ Jesus.
Jesus is mentioned 10 times in the first 10 verses of this letter so who do you think the focus is on?
The focus is on Jesus.
The church is a mess but Paul continues to praise God for this church because of the grace that has been given to them.
Verse 5
By Jesus they were made rich in everything, speaking and knowledge.
By Jesus they came to know him and His grace.
1 Corinthians 1:6
Verse 6 the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you meaning the good news of Jesus Christ was confirmed.
This witness was confirmed in the Corinthians.
The verb is often used in the papyri in the legal sense of guaranteeing.
Paul is saying that the changed lives of the Corinthians, specifically their ‘speaking’ and their ‘knowledge’ (v.
5), demonstrated the validity of the message preached to them
He confirms the change that has taken place in their lives.
I love this because things are not going the way they should be in the church at Corinth but Paul writes and reminds them of the impact the Gospel has had on their lives.
I think it would be good for everyone in this room this morning to reflect on the change the Gospel has made on your life.
You are not where God wants you to be but just reflect on the Gospel and the change it has made in you since you first heard it.
Verse 7
So that you don’t lack any Spiritual gift
The Corinthians do not lack any Spiritual gift.
What is the reason that they don’t lack any Spiritual gift?
You have been provided every spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The gifts are given as they await Jesus’s return
If we are not cautious, then we will long for Spiritual gifts for our benefit.
The Spiritual gifts are provided to us as we eagerly long for the return of Jesus.
The focus is not on the gift.
The goal of Spiritual gifts is Jesus.
1
The verb strengthen you or keep you strong is translated was confirmed in verse 6. Jesus gives believers everything they need so that they might be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
verse 9
God is Faithful
You were called by Him into fellowship with His Son
The word fellowship is the direct opposite of the word divisions
