The Kingdom Of God – 3 The Kingdom of God- The First Hostile Takeover - 2 My favorite kind of sandwich is ________________________________________ Two iterations of the Kingdom of God… Matthew 6:9 “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. The first iteration and its characteristics. The Kingdom of God in heaven. God is fully present. God, in His three persons, are fully in control. God’s will is perfectly expressed and perfectly fulfilled. The second iteration and its characteristics. The Kingdom of God on earth. God is present but not fully present. God is all-powerful but suspends the expression of His power, sharing it with those He has created in His image. God’s will is imperfectly understood and often replaced with the will of those created in His Image. An earthly example. Two iterations of the United States of America.___________ _________________________________________________________________ What is the Kingdom of god like? Luke 13:18 Then Jesus asked, “What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it to? 19 It is like a mustard seed… 20 Again he asked, “What shall I compare the kingdom of God to? 21 It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour… An extremely interesting difference…____________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ What can we learn about God’s Kingdom in the following passage?____________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ Genesis 1: 26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in umber; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” Important interpretive tools… Matthew 20: 25 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,” The tools are______________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ Back to Genesis…Genesis 2:15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” Basically, mankind is called to be ____________. Their primary work is to_____ _________________________________________________________________ When God says, “…you must not…” the risky implication is___________________ This is the advent of_________________________________________________ Why exclude this one tree?___________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ The first hostile takeover…Genesis 3:1 3 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” 4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. “They realized they were naked…” is just another way of saying______________ _________________________________________________________________ The key to this successful hostile takeover of the Kingdom of God on earth was, and is____________________________________________________________
