Solid Foundation
B.R. Luke 6:46-49
46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:
48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.
49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.
Text Psalm 127:1; Except the Lord Build the house, they labor in vain that build it. Except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.
1 Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: Except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.
Introduction.
When buying a home much of the appeal has to do with the amenities, and decoration. Crown molded ceilings, vaulted entrance, walk in closets, granite countertops, hardwood floors, etc, are the things that catch the eye. These are the features that people show off when they have guests come to visit.
But the longevity of the house is determined long before the kitchen and bathrooms are installed, and even long before the walls and the roof are installed. If the foundation isn’t right then it all comes crumbling to the ground. But no one ever says, my foundation was set with a Three Line Laser Foundation Level.
The foundation is the most important part of the construction. The foundation supports the weight of the entire structure.
The early Egyptian pyramids were laid with foundations that were visibly level, but over time these pyramids began to crumble down. Then the Egyptians developed a method of leveling that used water, knowing that water finds its own level. They used this method to build the foundation of the Great Pyramids which are still standing almost 4500 years later!
In construction foundation is everything. So it is in life building. We need to establish Godly foundations.
Our Text verse is true Psalm 127:1; Except the Lord Build the house, they labor in vain that build it. Except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.
I. LETTING GOD BUILD THE HOUSE
Prov 3:5,6 5) Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6) IN all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct they paths.
How does the Lord build our house? We have to trust his blueprint!
A. Trusting in Self.
People trust their own wisdom and their own experience.
People Trust in their own wealth and understanding.
People continually try to lay the foundations of their lives on things that won’t stand the test of time.
They will push aside the tried, tested, and proven foundation and teachings of the word of God, and will build on their own understanding and reasoning.
How will this end? It will end with their lives crumbling down around them.
Prov. 16:25; There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof re the ways of death.
It is critical that our lives are set in the foundation of Christ! His way, his will.
God’s word is the heavenly level!
II. CHIEF CORNERSTONE REJECTED
The Jews were looking and anxiously anticipating the arrival of the Christ, yet when he came they trusted in their own ways, and rejected him.
Peter, after getting in trouble for performing a miracle, made the proclamation.
Acts 4:11,12; 11) This is the stone which was set at naught of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. 12) Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
The cornerstone is the first stone that is set in the foundation. It is flat, and level, and all the rest of the foundation is laid in comparison to the cornerstone.
Christ is the Chief Cornerstone! We need to set our life on HIM!
III. CHIEF CORNERSTONE ACCEPTED
Matt 16:15-18; 15He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? 16And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. 17And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. 18And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
Peter realized where to build his foundation.
Jesus told him, “Follow Me and I will MAKE YOU fishers of men.”
Abraham, too. By faith he sojourned in the land of Promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise. For he looked for a city which hath foundations whose builder and maker is God.
Abraham laid a godly foundation and example for his family, and his children followed in his steps.
WE HAVE TO SET THE EXAMPLE. In a world that pulls our children in every imaginable direction WE are the ones that show them Jesus Christ.
AND WE CANT DO THAT DOING OUR OWN THING!
It requires a surrender to his will, and allowing the Lord to have HIS way. This is the essence of salvation.
Conclusion.
Psalm 1
1Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
2But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
3And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
4The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
5Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
6For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.
