In this passage we are see the disciples had fished all night and had come up empty-handed. Jesus arrived on the scene and told them to go out a little farther and to fish a little deeper.
I. Worth Following v. 11
In the last verse we see something that we may not have paid attention to previously. Luke notes that Simon and Andrew had already had contact with Jesus. He also records that Jesus had already been to Peter’s house and healed his mother in law of a fever.
II. Worth Believing v. 4, 5
The Bible says that Peter informed Jesus that they had been fishing all night and nothing had worked. The Bible says that most of the fisherman had already given up and were washing their nets. Peter was now listening to a carpenter trying to tell him how to fish. I want this to be a lesson to everyone of us. John Wooden, who coached UCLA to 10 NCAA Basketball Championships but the only championship he won was in high school. If you started a team with all time great players he would not be on your team but you would be extremely foolish not to consider him as a coach.
III. Worth Worshiping v. 8
I believe that many of us don’t follow Jesus as we should because we have not seen Him affect our lives. It did not seem to mean much that they had already witnessed Jesus removing the fever from Peter’s mother in law; nor that He had cast out the demon of the man in the synagogue in Capernaum, but when He made a difference in their lives they responded differently.
