Introduction
Greetings...
1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
We continue looking at our series of lessons on “Satan’s Lies.”
We left off last week examining our first lesson on “Theistic Evolution” and the “Gap Theory” in particular.
We determined, biblically, that this doctrine was false and not biblically logical.
Today we are going to look at what was at one time a very popular theistic evolution doctrine as I mentioned last week, but do to linguistics and flat out irrefutable evidence it has fallen on hard times over the 20 years.
That hasn’t kept people from subscribing to it and thus the reason for looking at it today.
That particular doctrine is commonly called the “Day Age” theory.
Its basic premise is that each of the six days in the book of Genesis are prophetic days or days that equal eons of time within each one.
Thus, the “first day” is prophetic of millions if not billions of years.
One of the supposed “proof text” for this is .
8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
So there are three things we must consider and study to determine if these “Day Age” theory is possible.
Is written in a “prophetic” style or literal style?
What does the word “yom” or “day” mean in the Hebrew?
Does prove or allow for the Day Age theory?
What does the word “yom” or “day” mean in the Hebrew?
With this in mind let’s examine our lesson for this morning.
Symbolic Vs Literal
Symbolic Vs Literal
There is zero reason to suggest it isn’t literal.
There is zero reason to suggest it isn’t literal.
I’m always amazed at the hoops and twists it takes for people to try and shove their ideas into passages of the Bible.
It never fails when people get something in their mind, it doesn’t matter if Jesus Himself declared it was just six 24 hour days they wouldn’t believe Him.
It just so happens that Jesus makes this basic argument.
Jesus made it clear that the earth was not billions of years old but much younger.
The earth was not billions of years old but much younger.
6 But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’
16 And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them.
Notice Adam and Eve were in the “beginning of creation” not billions of years after the fact.
50 so that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world, may be charged against this generation, 51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation.
Notice Abel’s blood shed was considered “from the foundation of the world.”
Jesus made it clear Moses was to be believed as inspired.
45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, on whom you have set your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. 47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”
If that is the case then we must believe Moses who wrote .
11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
In fact, in , a man responded to Jesus healing someone on the Sabbath who knew this very verse when he stated...
14 But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to the people, “There are six days in which work ought to be done. Come on those days and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day.”
The Sabbath and the other six days were considered “ordinary days” by this man.
Summary
Summary
Jesus, Himself, clearly implied the earth was not billions of years old and that should settle it but unfortunately for far too many it won’t.
1 Day Equals 1000 Days
1 Day Equals 1000 Days
Peter’s letter and theistic evolution.
Peter’s letter and theistic evolution.
For years now, since the late 1800’s, those that have believed in God and evolution have sought to use Peter’s words in as proof text that one day in could equal 1000 plus years.
2 Pt
8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
To determine if this can be a “proof text” verse we must examine the context of the passage.
Peter, inspired by God, is reminding the people of the promises of God made through the holy prophets concerning the second coming of Christ because there would be “some” that would deny Jesus was coming back.
1 This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, 2 that you should remember the predictions of the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles, 3 knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. 4 They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.”
1 This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, 2 that you should remember the predictions of the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles,
Peter then declares they are no different than those in the past that have denied God and His promises, but that is futile thinking and their end, at the second coming, will be like those of old during the flood.
5 For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God, 6 and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished. 7 But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.
Peter sums this up in verse 9 by reminding them God will keep His promise but their is a reason why it hasn’t happened yet.
9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
Now that is the context but smashed in between and verse 9 Peter explains that the time of God’s promise is not like that of man.
8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
When man makes a promise it must be done in a certain amount of “time” but for God whether He made the promise yesterday or 1000 years ago time is not an object because He can keep His promise. Hence verse 9…God isn’t slow keeping his promise, it will take place.
Summary
Summary
At no point does Peter say “one day is 1000 years to God and 1000 years is a day.”
No, God says it is “like” that to Him.
We should also point out that this simile cannot be understood at all if we don’t know what God means by “one day” and “1000 years.”
The Hebrews Word Yom
The Hebrews Word Yom
The word day must mean 24 hour day.
The word day must mean 24 hour day.
The Hebrew word for “day” is the word “yom” and when it is placed with a numerical adjective it always means 24 hour day.
In other words of the out of the 2,269 times it is found in the O.T. every time we find it used outside of “” no one argues it is dealing with a 24 hour day.
17 The flood continued forty days on the earth. The waters increased and bore up the ark, and it rose high above the earth.
Gn
4 For in seven days I will send rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, and every living thing that I have made I will blot out from the face of the ground.”
3 You shall march around the city, all the men of war going around the city once. Thus shall you do for six days.
Jos 6:
10 “And on the eighth day he shall take two male lambs without blemish, and one ewe lamb a year old without blemish, and a grain offering of three tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil, and one log of oil.
17 And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
19 You shall not eat just one day, or two days, or five days, or ten days, or twenty days,
When the Hebrew word “yom” is modified with the words evening and/or morning it always is referencing a 24 hour period of time.
16 For forty days the Philistine came forward and took his stand, morning and evening.
13 The next day Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood around Moses from morning till evening.
13 The next day Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood around Moses from morning till evening.
20 “This is the offering that Aaron and his sons shall offer to the Lord on the day when he is anointed: a tenth of an ephah of fine flour as a regular grain offering, half of it in the morning and half in the evening.

Arthur C. Custance, a Canadian anthropologist, sent a letter to Hebrew scholars in nine leading universities.
He ask them “Do you understand the Hebrew word yom, as used in , accompanied by a numeral, to be properly translated as: (a) a day as commonly understood, or (b) an age, or (c) an age or a day without preference for either?”
Seven responded and each said “a day as commonly understood.”
Conclusion
Conclusion
Brothers and sisters to believe the Bible and evolution can harmonize is only possible if one is willing to distort and disfigure the holy word of God.
Not only is evolution not scientifically viable it certainly isn’t biblically viable.
Invitation
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.

1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
