Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
The Reward of this Relationship
The Reward of this Relationship
We have looked at the amazing, out-of-this-world love of God and that, having experienced and received His love, we are the sons of God through faith in Jesus Christ. We talked last week about the fact that God’s love works a change in our lives from the inside out. Today, we are going to finish our study about the Result of His Love as we see the reward of our relationship, our responsibility in this relationship, and the resources we have been given in this relationship.
Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
One of the most discouraging realities for a new believer is that we still sin from time to time. Like we saw last week, that is no excuse, but is does help us understand the journey of the Christian life a little better.
In His timeless classic, The Pilgrim’s Progress, John Bunyan tells about a man who flees the City of Destruction and finds salvation at the cross. After his salvation, Christian begins his journey to the Celestial City where he will enjoy eternal life with His Savior. Along the way, however, he is attacked by the Giant of Despair, tempted to dwell in the city of Vanity Fair, faced with philosophical intimidation by so called scholars, and even called on by friends and loved ones to turn back and end this ridiculous expedition.
Each of these situations he faced are pictures of what you and I face in our Christian lives as children of God. We are surrounded by people and circumstances that attempt to pull us away from walking closely with Jesus. Then, when we fall and sin, they point out our failure and rub it in our faces.
I hate failing! I hate it every time I mess up. I hate every time an impure thought crosses my mind or an unkind word or ungodly attitude rises up within me. When anger takes hold and hurtful words spew, I grieve over my sinfulness.
Are you with me? Do you experience this?
How many of you get victory in one area of your life only to find that there are seven other areas where you need to get victory? Yeah! I’m there! Last week, we talked about the victory we can have.
God’s Word gives us confidence that we can live in victory over sin and that one day, we will see that Blessed Hope!
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
teaching us that denying ungodliness and worldly lusts we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
Jesus is coming!
Jesus is going to take us out of this world to be with Him for eternity.
At a time of the Father’s choosing, Jesus Christ will come in the clouds. As 1 Thessalonians tells us, there will be a shout, the voice of the arch angel, and the trump of God.
No, that does not mean President Trump!
In that moment (the Bible tells us it takes place in the twinkling of an eye), those who trusted Jesus as their Savior and have passed into eternity will rise from the grave. God in His infinite power will give them incorruptible bodies (bodies that will not/cannot die or decay), and they will go to meet Him in the clouds. Then those who are alive on earth who have trusted Jesus as their Savior will be caught up as join them. Scripture says, So shall we ever be with the Lord.
Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
What a comfort to know that one day, Jesus is coming to rescue us from this world of sin!
See, when He died on the cross, He did it to save us from sin and give us victory over sin. At the moment of salvation, Jesus saves us from the penalty and power of sin.
knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
For he that is dead is freed from sin.
For sin shall not have dominion over you. For ye are not under the Law, but under grace
For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
For sin shall not have dominion over you. For ye are not under the Law, but under grace
As we yield our lives to Him daily, Jesus conforms us more into His image and saves us from the prominence of sin in our lives, and one day, He will save us from the presence of sin! He will take us out of this sin cursed earth to live with Him!
This is the promise to all who have trusted Jesus Christ as their Savior. This is the Reward of our Relationship.

The Resources of this Relationship
The reality of the imminent return of Jesus Christ is perhaps one of the greatest motivators for us to live holy lives.
And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
1 John 3:
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.

1 John 3:7
Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous. Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you. We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother hath need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence towards God. And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
1 John 3:4
We are the children of God
We are the children of God
Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
1 John 3:
We are not perfect
We are not perfect
We are being perfected
We are being perfected
And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

Many years ago, the United States government found it necessary to train people in the detection of counterfeit currency. Through the years, these men and women have become very proficient in telling the difference between the genuine and fake.
They realize that everything that looks like a $100 bill is not necessarily an actual $100 bill of US currency. They realize that while many people may be deceived and try to spend that currency, it does not have the value of the genuine article.

If you were to print up your own money, making it look as close to actual American money as possible, and purchase a ticket to Hawaii, your intent may be to go to Hawaii but the result would be that you would go to prison. Such is the case with many professing Christianity today. They have something that looks similar to biblical Christianity, but a close inspection will reveal that these have sadly accepted a counterfeit which will not take them to Heaven. God’s Word is very clear regarding salvation, what it means, and how we can go to Heaven.
As we read , we see the apostle states plainly that we are not perfect. However, God is working in us to perfect us and to help us become more like Jesus Christ. This work will not be completed until we see him face-to-face. John says “and it doth not yet appear what we shall be…“

So what is real Christianity? What is counterfeit? How can we tell the difference? How can we be assured that we have not excepted a counterfeit? Let’s look at the word of God for our answer!

Just as there are counterfeit currencies being circulated by those who would take advantage of others, so also there are counterfeit gospels being preached. Sadly, many are believing these counterfeits.

They sound very appealing to an unsaved person. When preachers tell you that God is only interested in you being happy, you had better be careful because they are preaching a counterfeit gospel. God is not only interested in you being happy; God is interested in you being holy!

God did not offer salvation so we could continue in sin. God offered salvation to free us from sin! The angel Gabriel told Joseph that Mary’s child should be called “Jesus for he shall save his people from their sins.”

A “gospel“ that tells you to believe in Jesus and you can continue to sin is a false gospel. This is why Jesus preached repentance. This is why Scripture says that salvation is repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

Anyone who is saves will not live in sin without any consequences.
But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.
Anyone who is saves will not live in sin without any consequences.
But what about those who go to church and said they believe in Jesus but they are living in sin? There is a difference in believing the historical facts regarding Jesus life and ministry and believing the biblical truth that he is God in the flesh who gave himself to be the sacrifice for our sins and redeem us from the curse of sin. Salvation comes when we understand that Jesus Christ is our only hope for eternal life.

What are the marks of a real Christian?
Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

In other words, Those who are saved or not going to live a lifestyle of sin and rebellion against God. The Holy Spirit lives within us. His word is powerfully at work in our lives. We cannot continue in sin without being absolutely miserable. God lovingly corrects and teaches us how dangerous and vain sin truly is.

Instead of indulging in the lifestyle of sin, a true child of God will experience the grace of God to help us resist temptation. Having biblical salvation does not mean that we will be sinless, but it does mean we should sin less.

And another mark of true Christianity is a genuine love for our brothers and sisters in Christ. This is not self-serving but rather self-sacrificing. This is the love that truly puts others before ourselves. It is the love that continues regardless of whether or not it is reciprocated.

This kind of love is one of the fruits of the spirit spoken of in Galatians chapter 5. defines this kind of love. It is long-suffering and kind. It is not envious. It is not boastful or proud. It’s not rude. It’s not suspicious. Rather it is trustful, hopeful, and faithful.

The proofs of real Christianity are not things that we work up. Rather, they are produced by Jesus Christ as we yield to Him. As He lives through us, He will be seen in our lives.
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Again, This does not mean we will never do wrong. However, it does mean that when we do wrong, we will have a desire to quickly get it right with God and others.

But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
The Christian life can be summed up in these 3 words:
