Bottomline: A community centered around Christ will always be marked by selfless love.

Intro talk about loner culture...

Most of us want community without commitment. We want all the perks without any of the work.

The early church teaches us that presences is more important than perfection.

Acts 2:42–47 NIV
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
Acts 4:32–35 NIV
All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.

Slavery, Racial divide, Temple idol worship, some weird practices in terms of sex, false teachers, greed, real persecution.

“Christianity” disconnected from community is just a pick me up religion that is NOT REAL. You cannot divorce Jesus from His bride The Church.

Hebrews 10:24–25 NIV
And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

It refines us

We all have rough edges that need trimmed…sometimes we need help to do that

It anchors us

Our true anchor is Jesus, scripture is an anchor for orthodox, but community is also an anchor us with accountability

It encourages us

We need people who will look at us a tell us who we really are which is defined by whose are.
