Separate geogrphically and chronologically from events of ch. 5 (The jews of Jerusalem)
Ch. 6 Contact with the populace. Both sections (Ch. 5 & Ch.6) have similar response. Both resulted in controversy which distinguished trends of beilief and unbelief.
Jesus Deity not accepted
Jesus Claims (5: 19 - 29)
I and Father are one, I do what the father says, etc.
The Witnesses for substantiating Jesus claims: (5:30-47)

II. The Witness of John the Baptist (5: 32- 35)
III. The Witness of Jesus' Works (5: 36)

Feedng of Five Thousand
Feedng of Five Thousand
Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?”
The Feeding of the Five Thousand (6: 1-15)
. Teaching the disciples faith:
A. Philip was a "statistical pessimist" He had all the facts but knew what could not be done.
B. Andrew was an "ingeious optimist". Andrew broght something, hoping that something might be done. He had faith. Jesus could justify any faith placed in Him.
Jesus walks on Water.
Jesus walks on Water.
When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea,
In John it centers on Jesus' relation to the disciples. They recognized that apart from Jesus they were lost. No immediate reaction on part of disciples recorded. The miracle revealed His power over nature / rounded out the picture of His manifested Deity.
Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?”
Righteousness for the Jew had come to mean something accomplished by his effort rather than appropriated by faith. cf. .
. the work of God is a declaration of belief. Accepting His person and claims results in eternal life, not self-adjustmen to a scheme of ordinances
So the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”
Another time at which the Jews grumblede and discussed the matter of bread of life, a time separate from the multitudes.
Jews disputed
Jews disputed
The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
Similar to Jesus spoke in parables so they would not understand truth which they would reject or pervert. Jesus only spoke of the symbolical meaning w/o explaining it.
. They missed the metaphor. They were stuck in literalism because of their ignorance and rebellion.
. Jesus spoke on other occasions about mutual abiding.
. vv66-67 indicate that Jesus taught in metapors with purpose of revealing the true position of his "disciples"
have believed
have believed
and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”

After this . . .
After this . . .
After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him.
Introduces the period of conflict 7:1 - 11:53
. a parallel development of belief and unbelief = clash of opposing forces.
. The prior period of controversy - arguments arising from unsettled attitudes.
. Period of conflict - arguments of fixed attitudes.
A. The setting 7: 1 - 2
. fixed attitude that Jesus must be done away with, "seeking to kill him".
. Feast of tabernacles/booths - commemorates the end of wandering in wilderness. Thanksgiving.

B. The Unbelief of his brothers and sisters 7: 3 - 9
So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing.
Jesus’ brothers, sons of Mary and Joseph after Jesus’ birth, were at this time unbelievers (cf. , ; ; ). They logically argued that the messianic question could not be settled in Galilee, as Jerusalem was the religious capital.
Blum, E. A. (1985). John. In J. F. Walvoord & R. B. Zuck (Eds.), The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures (Vol. 2, p. 299). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books.
C. The Bewilderment of the People - 13
C. The Bewilderment of the People - 13
But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private.
Three Attitudes:
Jews sought Jesus. Probably to kill Him.
Some people defended Jesus. v.12 "He is a good man."
Some people saw Jesus as a deceiver /v.12
D. Jesus Public Appearance 7: 14 - 19, 21-24, 33, 34
D. Jesus Public Appearance 7: 14 - 19, 21-24, 33, 34
About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and began teaching.
Jesus demonstrated various attitudes:
Authority: v.14 Assumed rabbinical authority and taught. Peole were amazed.
Subordination: v. 16 submitted to will of God His father, not his own will. This gave validity to his claims - if His teaching came from God.
Challenge: If Moses allowed circumcision on the sabbath, why should not the healing of a man on the sabbath be permissible?
E. Response of the People 7: 20, 25-32, 35, 36
E. Response of the People 7: 20, 25-32, 35, 36

When they heard these words, some of the people said, “This really is the Prophet.”
"If any man thirsts let him come to me and drink" v. 37
Jesus appeals to scripture: "With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation" Then he brought me back to the door of the temple, and behold, water was issuing from below the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was flowing down from below the south end of the threshold of the temple, south of the altar.
The feast may have been a memorial to water that Moses provided for in the wilderness for Israel.
On each day of the feast, a libation of water was brought from pool of siloam and was offered by the priests as they sang () With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation" (Tenney)
It was possibly a reminder of water for Israel, dry and thirsty in the wilderness.
Jesus used water to signify HS / Nicodemus.
Women at the well / water, never thirst = HS.
v.39 HS would come after Jesus had been glorified.
v. 46 officers expressed that no man could speak like this, it must come from God. Testimony to His deity.
Woman caught in adultery
Woman caught in adultery
They went each to his own house,
Tenney p. 138 quotes A.T. Robertsaon /"It is clear that it is not a genuine part of the Gospel of John"
Hammond claims it is genuinely a description of part of Jesus life though it may be misplaced. The consent of the Universal church has set the seal of canonicity.
Because of itss ancient character and undoubtedly historic truthfulness, it is included in the analysis of Tenney.
Some manuscripts fit it after
A plot set up to put Jesus in a dilema.
v.6 "said" imperfect tense indicating that they prodded him repeatedly to make Him commit Himself.
The Triangle: Pharisees, Jesus, Women.
Pharisees had an attitude of cruelty. Cared nothing about the woman. She was "bait" to trap Jesus. No effort to salvage the woman. The utter heartlessness of her captors was as immoral as was the promiscuity of the woman.
states that the witness to a crime must be the first to cast the first stones. Dilema of pharisees: If they were sinless, how had they qualified as witnesses? Were they not sinless how could they consistenlty condemn the woman? As they files out, they confessed their own guilt and proved that they were in no position to act as judges of others.
Jesus was not lax - by forgiving her, He acknowledged her guilt. In sermon on the mount () Jesus priciples show He went beyond the letter of the law. The case was dismissed because lack of accusers.
------------------------------------------------
Period of conflict from 8:12 - 10:42 comprise a series of 5 argumentative discources, interrupted by the story of the man born blind. (9: 1-41)
G. First Discourse: The Address to the Pharisees (8: 12-30)
G. First Discourse: The Address to the Pharisees (8: 12-30)
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
This discourse and the next one to the Jews (8:31-59) are part of then same discourse delivered in the temple (20, 59)
Jesus used personal pronoun ca 23 times . Jesus is enforcing his claims. (pp. 144 Tenny)
Jesus states, I am the light of the World. Light was introduced in Prologe to John (1: 4-5) (see Tenny p.66-67 on light. "Light is the effect of life in the universe. Light is the clear manifestation of the righteousness of of God. That which reflects the nature of God - goodness, true, ) Ensuing conflict was beween light and darkness. Light of revelation and darkness of sin and prejudice. Light needs no witness; it demonstrates its reality by its own radiance! The pharisees ubelief was because of ignorance.
v.28 the cross will reveal His true identity.
The pharisees needed "new categories of thinking" in order to comprehend and evaluate the person of Jesus accurately.
Their ignorance caused unbelief.
Paragraph 2 vv 21-30 is a warning of consequences of unbelief.
Inspite of the opposition, many believed. v 30
H. Second Discourse: To the Believing Jews 8:31 - 59
H. Second Discourse: To the Believing Jews 8:31 - 59
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples,
Truth received, believed and learned will set one free from past bondages. Jesus attempted to deepen the shallow beliefe of the Jews.
Their Response: Resistance.
"Know" dereived from experience ginosko (as opposed to ioda / head knowledge).
Know, truth, free - a progress from ignorance to knowledge, from error/missinformation to truth, from slavery to liberty.
Knowledge is conditioned by "abiding" in His word. Revelation is more imprtant than experience. "I believe inorder that I may understand!"
