Mother of Zebedee’s Children

After three years of Mother’s Day messages, what do you say that is different than before?
Having never been a mother, I am careful not to criticize, or just simply put by foot in my mouth.
Mother’s Day, is a very special day that we honor our godly mothers and grandmothers.
Looking at the history and some of the traditions of Mother’s Day I found out that.
Mother’s Day was found by Anna M. Jarvis May 10, 1908. Because of the love that Ms. Jarvis had for her mother.
On May 10th, 1908 She held a special memorial service for her mother. She gave carnation (her mother’s favorite flower) to each person who attended.
Within a few years, the idea of a day to honor mothers gained popularity, and Mother’s Day was observed in a large numbers of cities in the United States.
Nearly six years later, on May 9th, 1914, By an act of congress, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
President Wilson established the day as a time for “public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country.
By then it had become customary to wear white carnations to honor departed mothers and red to honor the living, a custom that continues to this day.
Presentation of Carnations.
Can I please have all my Mothers present here today to stand.
In the Mother’s Day tradition of Ms. Anna Jarvis, Friendship Baptist Church like to present you with a carnation.
Thank You Mother’s for all that you do!
Proverbs 6:20-
Proverbs 6:20–23 KJV 1900
20 My son, keep thy father’s commandment, And forsake not the law of thy mother: 21 Bind them continually upon thine heart, And tie them about thy neck. 22 When thou goest, it shall lead thee; When thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; And when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee. 23 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; And reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
The Bible says, “that the law of the mother shall lead you and shall be a light unto you and you will remember what your mother taught you through out your life.
Pray
Here are some things mom taught us:
Foresight:
Make sure you wear clean underwear in case you’re in an accident.
Logic:
If you fall out of a tree and break your neck, don’t come crying to me.
Religon:
You better pray, that stain comes out of the carpet.
Time Travel:
If you don’t straighten up, I’m going to knock you into the middle of next week.
Genetics:
You’re, just like your father.
Contradictions:
Shut your mouth and eat your food.
Contortions:
Will you look at the dirt on the back of your neck.
The Circle of Life:
I brought you into this world, and I can take you out of it.
A Mother Knows everything.
Kitchen utensils are probably going to wind up outside shoveling dirt.
Having sticky floors, dirty ovens equals happy children.
Knows that dried up play dough, doesn’t come out of shag carpets.
Knows that her child or children like to eat the whole candy bar (all by themselves) and get your drink, and when they return it to you. It will have floaters in it.
Mother’s are incredible, influential teachers.
Julie and I attended a Mary Lowry concert a couple of years ago, and Mark talked how he loved his mother, praising her for all that she had done for him.
He said, “The best thing that she had done for him was she always prayed for him.
Mark Lowry wrote a song about his mama’s prayer life.
Sing “Mama Prayed”
Today I want to talk about a mother you don’t here to much in the Bible.
But I feel you mothers and grandmothers will get a special blessing.
From her testimony and can you relate to it.
What a mother wouldn’t do to see her children to head in life.
Please turn your Bible to our text this morning:
Matthew 20:20–23 KJV 1900
20 Then came to him the mother of Zebedee’s children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him. 21 And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom. 22 But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able. 23 And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.
This text usually preached to showcase negative attitudes and wrong thinking.
Most theologians, believe that the women in our text is quit possibly a woman by the name of Salome’.
We come to this conclusion by looking at the women who stood vigil at the cross.
Matthew 27:56 KJV 1900
56 Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s children.
Matthew 27:
Mark 15:40 KJV 1900
40 There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome;
John 19:25 KJV 1900
25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
Salome’ is Mary’s, the mother of Jesus, SISTER.
Jesus’ aunt Salome’, the mother of the Disciples James and John, who were probably Jesus’ first cousins.
At first glance it’s a story of a mother (Salome’) trying to get her two boys cushy jobs with the state.
The boys had been brought up by their father, Zebedee, to be fisherman. Hard work, hard living.
Matthew 4:21–22 KJV 1900
21 And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them. 22 And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.
Matthew 4:21-
Matthew 20:
Matthew 20:21 KJV 1900
21 And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom.
Let’s look at
Matthew 20
Matthew 20:21 KJV 1900
21 And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom.
When she talks about Jesus’ Kingdom here.
She’s not thinking in the spiritual, heavenly realm.
Rather as a Kingdom that will overthrow the Romans.
Who occupy Israel.
Restore Israel’s former glory.
Working as one of the King’s advisors seems like a whole lot easier way to make a living than a fisherman in Galilee.
A. In these three verses there are some “How To’s” and “What To’s” that Salome’ can teach us.
First, we learn where to go to get the best in life.
Salome’ approached Jesus, bring with her
Her two sons with a perceived need in her life.
Her two sons would find favor with Jesus.
Bad motives aside.
She brings herself, her children, and her request to the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Bible tells us to bring our request (needs and desires) to the Lord.
Needs
Matthew 6:8 KJV 1900
8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
Philippians 4:19 KJV 1900
19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
Philippians
Desires
Psalm 37:4 KJV 1900
4 Delight thyself also in the Lord; And he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
Psalm
Matthew 7:7–8 KJV 1900
7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: 8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
Matthew 7:
She doesn’t come alone, she brings her children.
There are things that are taught and there are things that can only be caught.
Have you ever noticed that children imitate their parents?
Words
Sense of humor
Good, bad ugly and often even an attitude
A husband leaves his clothes all over the house
The wife gets on to him
The children follow after the father bad habits.
Your children may not always succeed in listening too you
But they will never fail to imitate you.
Salome’ had knelt down before the Lord Jesus Christ (as her Messiah), not her nephew.
She showed
Respect
Submission
Affection
Salome’ children caught mom’s attitude toward Jesus.
James became a martyr for the church.
We see in that he was killed for his belief in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Acts 12:2 KJV 1900
2 And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.
John is persecuted and sent into exile.
They couldn’t kill John so, they had to exile him to the Island of Patmos, where he wrote the Book of Revelation.
He was to only Disciple/Apostle that lived to an old age.
Revelation 1:9 KJV 1900
9 I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.
Revelation 1:9 KJV 1900
9 I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.

Revelation
Mother’s, you need to have the attitude of:
Respect
Submission
Affection
For, the Lord Jesus Christ
His Church
His People
The Leaders He puts over you
And Teach It To Your Children.
There are many things that we can teach our children.
That will give them advantages to better them selves.
Church
Teaching them about God
His Son
What His Son did for us.
The Power of Prayer
God’s Word
Education
Reading
Writing
Arithmetic
Not how to play video games
Text on a cell phone
Surf the Internet.
Don’t teach them vanities of the world.
Excessive pride
admiration of one’s own appearance or achievements.
Ecclesiastes 12:8 KJV 1900
8 Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity.
Ecclesiastes 12:8–9 KJV 1900
8 Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity. 9 And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.
Teach your “Children about God”
Ecclesiastes 12:8-
Not the habits of this world.
Ecclesiastes
Ecclesiastes 12:13 KJV 1900
13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
Ecclesiastes 12:
It is the duty of the Mother and the Father to teach their children about God.
There’s and old saying
“A family that prays together, stays together.”
This is a Biblical Truth about familys
A family that is faithful to the Lord is less likely to get broken up by divorce.
Usually, when you see a family that is broken up by divorce, The children will follow suit with there own family.
The greatest advantage we, as parents can do, is to give our children, a solid foundation in their personal relationship with the Lord.
Not being a good Baptist,
Not being a good Christian,
Rather a good disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ.
B. We also learn what to do, when Jesus doesn’t give us what we ask for.
Salome’ asked Jesus, for her boys to have sets of:
Honor
Prestige
Power
Authority
To be the “Somebodies” in His Kingdom
Her request was based on a promise given in
Matthew 19:28 KJV 1900
28 And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Another testimony to her true heart:
She believed in Jesus’ Promises.
Jesus says, “You don’t know what you’re asking!
But you will drink from it.”
Salome’ didn’t say another word.
She Pleaded her case
Made a deal
Accepted Jesus’ word as truth.
She just put everything in His hands and left there.
What a testimony moms
Salome’ is the feminine of the Hebrew word for Shalom (meaning Peace)
I think her name suits her, because she had;
Two sons who loved Jesus
Her own heart was submitted to Jesus
You can’t help but have “peace” when you’re trusting His:
Hand
Heart
Words
Promises
When you don’t get what you ask for, you can still go looking to be with the Lord.
Check out who was at the tomb on Easter Morning.
Ma
Mark 16:1 KJV 1900
1 And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.
She didn’t;
Get mad
upset
Bitter.
She just keep after Jesus
Cross
Tomb
Probably in the upper room
Pentecost
Mother’s when your prayers are not answered the way you want them too.
Just remind yourself that His promises are;
Good
And the Tomb is still empty.
C. As I close out this Mother’s Day service
Let’s look at what we learned;
Where to go when we want the best fo our family.
What to do when we don’t get what we asked for.
I have a question for you Mother’s?
Why does a mother love her newborn baby?
For 9 months, this baby brought you nothing but pain.
you broke out in pimples, stretch marks, and waddled like a duck when you walked.
They occupied space that wasn’t theirs.
They showed their appreciation as they kick the sides of your stoamch.
Made you crave watermelon, peanut butter ice cream.
Made you throw up every morning.
You kept them warm, safe and dry, and they never thanked you.
In fact from the moment of their birth they began to cry.
Your head hurts, back aches, you screamed, probably swore, you bit the bullet, every muscle in your body has been stretched and strained, you should be angry, and your not far from it.
The first thing that the little baby wants is their mother. (you’ve been doing all the work for the last 9 months, and you need a rest. But no break for you! Dad want do. they want you.)
The answer to that question is a Mother’s Love for her Child.
There Six Quality of a good godly mother ;
She will Protect her child (Mamma Bear Syndrome)
She will Educate her child
She will raise that child in church
She will sacrifice for her child, she always willing to give up everything for her children.
She wants the best for her child, she wants to give her children every advantage to succeed in life.
She Prays for her child, so, her children will follow in the path of the Lord.
