WELL, OF COURSE TODAY IS MOTHER’S DAY . . .
Have a successful career·
Keep the house· spotless
Raise perfect children·
Be a great cook·
Look like a· model
Be a charming hostess and conversationalist·
WE TAKE A SPECIAL EFFORT TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR OUR MOTHER’S
She cooked the breakfast first of all,
Washed the cups and plates.
Dressed the children and made sure
Stockings all were mates.
Combed their hair and made their beds,
Sent them our to play;
Gathered up their motley toys,
Put some books away.
Dusted chairs and mopped the stairs,
Ironed an hour or two;
Baked a jar of cookies and a pie,
Then made a pot of stew.
The telephone rang constantly,
The doorbell did the same;
A youngster fell and stubbed his toe
And then the laundry came.
She picked up blocks and mended socks,
Then she polished up the stove;
And when her husband came at six
He said, “I envy you!
It must be nice to sit at home
Without a thing to do!”
THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN conducted a nationwide survey several years ago in which they asked thousands of girls between the ages of 11 and 18 what they would like to be in adult life. A surprising 80% expressed a desire to be like their mothers!
Illus.: “A Lesson on Magnets”
A teacher had just given her 2nd grade class a lesson on magnets. Now came the question session. She asked the class, “My name starts with an M and I pick up things. What am I?” A little boy shot up his hand and said, “A mother!”
Did you hear about the fellow that wrote the following lament to his wife on Mother’s Day?
M is for the mink coat you want, dear.
O is for the opal ring you crave.
T is for the tiny car you’d love, my sweet.
H is for the hat that makes you rave.
E is for the earrings you’d admire, love.
R is for the rug on which you’d tread.
Put them all together, they spell bankrupt,
So I’m giving you this handkerchief instead.
Illus.: “My Mother is the Light of the World”
A little boy forgot his lines in a S. S. presentation. His mother was in the front row to prompt him. She gestured and formed the words silently with her lips, but it didn’t help. Her sons’ memory went blank. Finally, she leaned forward and whispered the cue, “I am the light of the world.” The boy’s face lit up and with great feeling and a loud and clear voice he said, “My mother is the light of the world.”
WE TAKE A SPECIAL EFFORT TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR OUR MOTHER’S
AS I THOUGHT AND PRAYED ABOUT WHAT TO PREACH ON THIS MORNING . . .
I CAME UPON THIS PASSAGE OF SCRIPTURE:
Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly.
MATT 15
AND I THOUGHT . . . WOW!
O WOMAN, GREAT IS YOUR FAITH . . . .
NOW, THERE ONLY 2 TIMES IN SCRIPTURE WHEN JESUS REFERS TO SOMEONE’S FAITH AS “GREAT FAITH”
THIS WOMAN
THE ROMAN CENTURION
NOW, THER ARE OTHER TIMES WE SEE JESUS MENTION “LITTLE FAITH”
But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.
He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
MATT 14:
4)
1)
25 “For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 “Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? 27 “And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life? 28 “And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, 29 yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. 30 “But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith! 31 “Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ 32 “For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. 34 “So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
2)
23 When He got into the boat, His disciples followed Him. 24 And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being covered with the waves; but Jesus Himself was asleep. 25 And they came to Him and woke Him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing!” 26 He *said to them, “Why are you afraid, you men of little faith?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and it became perfectly calm. 27 The men were amazed, and said, “What kind of a man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?”
3)
22 Immediately He made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side, while He sent the crowds away. 23 After He had sent the crowds away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray; and when it was evening, He was there alone. 24 But the boat was already a long distance from the land, battered by the waves; for the wind was contrary. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea. 26 When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” 28 Peter said to Him, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” 29 And He said, “Come!” And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and *said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 When they got into the boat, the wind stopped. 33 And those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “You are certainly God’s Son!”
4)
5 And the disciples came to the other side of the sea, but they had forgotten to bring any bread. 6 And Jesus said to them, “Watch out and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 7 They began to discuss this among themselves, saying, “He said that because we did not bring any bread.” 8 But Jesus, aware of this, said, “You men of little faith, why do you discuss among yourselves that you have no bread? 9 “Do you not yet understand or remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets full you picked up? 10 “Or the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many large baskets full you picked up? 11 “How is it that you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread? But beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 Then they understood that He did not say to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
5)
14 When they came to the crowd, a man came up to Jesus, falling on his knees before Him and saying, 15 “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is a lunatic and is very ill; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water. 16 “I brought him to Your disciples, and they could not cure him.” 17 And Jesus answered and said, “You unbelieving and perverted generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him here to Me.” 18 And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured at once. 19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not drive it out?” 20 And He *said to them, “Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.
YET, WE ALSO KNOW THAT MUCH CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED WITH JUST THIS LITTLE FAITH . . .
He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”
IT WAS THIS “LITTLE FAITH” WITH WHICH PETER WALKED ON WATER.
IMAGINE WHAT COULD BE ACCOMPLISHED WITH “GREAT FAITH”
SO . . . WHAT ARE SOME QUALITIES OF “GREAT FAITH”?
--
NOW, I KNOW AS WE HONOR MOTHER’S TODAY . . .
THERE ARE MANY MOTHER’S WHO HAVE LIVED OUT LIVES OF GREAT FAITH
WOMEN WHO HAVE KEPT THE FAMILY FAITHFUL EVEN WHEN US MEN OFTEN FAIL.
I KNOW MOTHER’S WHO HAVE UNBELIEVING HUSBANDS
MOTHER’S WHO HAVE UNBELIEVING CHILDREN
MOTHER’S WHO SACRIFICE SO MUCH FOR THEIR FAMILIES
MOTHER’S WHO PRAY FOR THEIR FAMILIES
HONESTLY, IN MY YEARS OF MINISTRY . . . I HAVE KNOWN MANY MORE MOTHER’S OF GREAT FAITH . . . .
THAN DAD’S OF GREAT FAITH
SO OFTEN, IN THE CHURCH IT IS THE FAITHFUL MOTHER’S AND WOMEN WHO REALLY GET THINGS DONE.
TRANSITION:
TRANSITION:
SO, WHAT EXACTLY DOES IT TAKE TO BE A WOMAN OF GREAT FAITH?
OR FOR THAT MATTER, A PERSON OF GREAT FAITH?
IN THS PASSAGE OF SCRIPTURE WE WILL SEE 4 QUALITIES OF A PERSON OF GREAT FAITH.
And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.” But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.” He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” And he answered, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly.
ONE THING NOT NEEDED WAS RELIGION
BOTH THAT JESUS NOTED FOR THEIR GREAT FAITH
WERE FROM THE OUTSIDE.
NOT ABOUT RELIGION
NOT ABOUT GOING THROUGH THE MOTIONS.
HUMBLENESS
HUMBLENESS
ONE THING THAT WILL KEEP A PERSON FROM BEING A PERSON OF GREAT FAITH
THE ATTITUDE OF “I DON’T NEED THAT”
“I’M OK”
THE OPPOSITE OF HUMILITY - PRIDE
THE CRAZY THING ABOUT PRIDE . . .
IT IS MUCH EASIER TO RECOGNIZE IN OTHERS THAN IN OURSELF
PRIDE IS REBELLION AGAINST GOD
NOT THIS WOMAN
“HAVE MERCY ON ME”
SHE WAS A CANAANITE WOMAN
JUST MEANING A NON-JEWISH GENTILE WOMAN
JESUS CALLED HER A DOG
DISCIPLES - “SEND HER AWAY”
IN FACT, IN HER REPLY TO JESUS . . . SHE SHOWS HER HUMILITY
Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table
HER DESPERATION IS OUTWEIGHING HER SELFISHESSNESS
THE QUESTION WE MUST CONSIDER . . . .
WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE IN YOUR LIFE . . . .
TO BRING YOU TO THIS POINT OF HUMILITY?
GOOD NEWS
YOU CAN RETIRE AS RULER OF THE UNIVERSE!
YOU DONT HAVE TO BE IN CONTROL OF EVERYTHING
GOD IS!!
But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
HUMILITY
NOT THINKING LESS OF YOURSELF
BUT RATHER THINKING OF YOURSELF LESS
THIS BRINGS ME TO THE NEXT QUALITY OF GREAT FAITH . . .
COMPASSION
COMPASSION
IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO HAVE COMPASSION UNLESS YOU FIRST HAVE HUMILITY
INTERESTING POINT . . .
BOTH TIMES JESUS CALLED OUT SOMEONE AS HAVING “GREAT FAITH”
BOTH WENT TO JESUS ON BEHALF OF SOMEONE ELSE
SHE WENT ON BEHALF OF HER DAUGHTER
THE CENTURION WENT ON BEHALF OF HIS SERVANT
THEY USED THEIR FAITH TO HELP OTHERS.
I MEAN, THIS IS WHAT FAITH SHOULD BE ABOUT, RIGHT?
OUR FAITH SHOULD BE A GIANT BILLBOARD TO OTHERS ABOUT THE ONE TO WHOM WE HAVE THIS FAITH IN
IF MY FAITH IS ALL ABOUT ME . . .
HOW WILL OTHERS SEE HIM?
DO YOU SEE HOW THIS MAY BE A HINDERANCE TO SOME HAVING GREAT FAITH?
WE LIVE IN A “WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME” WORLD
BUT COMPASSION . ..
ISN’T THAT WHAT WE EXPECT FROM GOD?
OR EVEN FROM EACH OTHER . . . RIGHT
LIKE, WE ALL WANT COMPASSION FROM OTHERS
BUT WE ARE OFTEN TOO SLOW TO SHOW IT TO OTHERS
ANOTHER WORD FOR COMPASSION
MERCY
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your steadfast love;
according to your abundant mercy
blot out my transgressions.
“Thus says the Lord of hosts, Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy to one another,
PS
Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,
COL
IT IS ABSOLUTELY CRAZY TO ME . . .
THAT FAR TOO OFTEN THE LAST PLACE WE FIND COMPASSION
IS IN THE CHURCH . . .
BUT GREAT FAITH . . . SHOW COMPASSION
QUESTION TO CONSIDER:
IF GOD WERE TO ANSWER MY PRAYERS
WHO WOULD BENEFIT . . . ME OR SOMEONE ELSE?
BUT GREAT FAITH . . . SHOWS COMPASSION
THAT FAR TOO OFTEN THE LAST PLACE WE FIND COMPASSION
IS IN THE CHURCH . . .
JESUS SHOWED COMPASSION EVERY WHERE HE WENT
--
PERSISTANCE
PERSISTANCE
NOWHERE ELSE IN THE BIBLE DO WE SEE A SINNER COMING TO THE SAVIOR DISCOURAGED BY HIM.
Discovering Christ in Matthew Great Faith
Nowhere else in the Book of God do we find a sinner coming to the Savior discouraged by him; but this woman met with great discouragement. At first the Master did not even answer her
AT FIRST HE DOESN’T EVEN ANSWER
But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.”
MATT 15:23
THE DISCIPLES WANT TO SEND HER AWAY
He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”
But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.”
MATT
And he answered, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”
MATT 15:26
She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.”
WHEN JESUS FINALLY DOES ANSWER, HE CALLS HER A DOG
BUT SHE NEVER STOPPED . . .
VS 23 “SHE IS CRYING OUT AFTER US”
EVEN THOUGH REJECTED . . .
SHE PERSISTED
To persist means to “keep on.” We need to keep on trusting God, regardless of the circumstances.
B. Selfishness—v. 23b. The disciples wanted to send the woman away. Perhaps they were fearful of the Gentiles. They were thinking of themselves. Who is first in your life? Christ should be first.
C. Sheep—v. 24. Christ was not only called to Israel; He was called to help the Gentiles as well. He longs to save all people of all ages and all classes (; ; ).
D. Sincere—v. 25. She worshiped the Lord. Notice she said, “Lord help me.” She saw her need and asked God for help. God cannot help us until we see our need.
E. Scorn—v. 26. The Jews called the Gentiles “dogs.” Again we see Christ testing her faith and sincerity.
SHE DID NOT ALLOW THE CIRCUMSTANCES DETERMINE HER GOAL
SHE WAS THERE FOR A REASON
AND SHE WASN’T PLANNING ON LEAVING UNTIL SHE GOT WHAT SHE SAUGHT.
THIS IS ONE THINGS MOTHERS SHOULD KNOW
KIDS
WHEN THEY ASK FOR SOMETHING
YOU TELL THEM NO.
THEY JUST SAY … . OK AND LEAVE, RIGHT
NO . . OF COURSE NOT
--
THERE WAS ALMOST THIS SENSE OF DESPERATION IN HER PLEA
HER DAUGHTER HAD A NEED THAT NO ONE ELSE COULD HELP
AND SHE HAD COME TO SEEK AN ANSWER
--
praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,
EPH
QUESTION TO CONSIDER:
WHAT / WHO HAVE YOU GIVEN UP ON?
DON’T GIVE UP
DON’T STOP PRAYING
DON’T STOP BELIEVING
WE SERVE A GOD WHO KNOWS . . .
WE SERVE A GOD WHO CARES . . .
WE SERVE A GOD WHO NEVER GIVES UP ON US . . .
SO, WE SHOULD NEVER GIVE UP ON HIM.
EXPECTATION
EXPECTATION
Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly.
MATT15:
JESUS SAID, “BE IT DONE FOR YOU AS YOUR DESIRE”
THIS EXPECTATION LED HER TO HUMBLE HERSELF
THIS EXPECTATION LED HER TO COMPASSION
THIS EXPECTATION LED HER TO BE PERSISTENT
THIS EXPECTATION LED TO HER DAUGHTER BEING HEALED
THIS EXPECTATION LED TO JESUS SAYING SHE HAD GREAT FAITH
I THINK MANY TIMES WE ASK . . . .
BUT WE NEVER EXPECT GOD TO ANSWER
OUR DESPERATION IS IN THE FACT THAT WE JUST DON’T BELIEVE GOD WILL EVER ANSWER OUR PRAYERS.
QUESTION TO CONSIDER:
WHAT ARE YOU EXPECTING GOD TO DO IN YOUR LIFE?
1. Little faith is stifled by fear while great faith is amplified by boldness.
2. Little faith focuses on the material world while great faith focuses on the spiritual world.
3. Little faith makes decisions based on what is possible for humans while great faith makes decisions based on what is possible for God.
CONCLUSION:
CONCLUSION:
DO YOU EVER FEEL LIKE GOD JUST DOESN’T HEAR YOU?
DO YOU WANT TO BE A PERSON OF GREAT FAITH?
DO YOU WANT TO BE A PERSON OF GREAT FAITH?
KNOW THAT HE DOES . . .
TRUST HIM IN THE SILENCE
TRUST HIS PURPOSE EVEN IN THE MIDST OF YOUR PAIN
WAIT ON GOD’S TIMING
BE PERSISTENT IN YOUR PLEA
HUMBLE YOURSELF BEFORE HIM
EXPECT A GOD SIZED ANSWER
ALTAR CALL
ALTAR CALL
YOU MAY BE HERE TODAY AND YOU ARE TIRED AND WEARY
YOU HAVE FACED YOUR STRUGGLES ON YOUR OWN WAY TOO LONG
MAYBE IT’S TIME TO HUMBLE YOURSELF AND COME TO THE FATHER
HAVE YOU EVER REALLY TRUSTED JESUS AS YOUR LORD
MAYBE YOU HAVE BEEN CRYING OUT TO GOD FOR ALL KINDS OF THINGS
AND GOD IS JUST WAITING FOR YOU TO CALL OUT TO HIM TO BE YOUR LORD AND SAVIOR.
LET’S MAKE A COMMITMENT TO TOTALLY SURRENDER TO JESUS TODAY . . .
And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.”
A. Seeking—v. 21. Christ came to the coasts of Sidon and Tyre where people sought Him for help.
B. Savior—v. 22. The woman called Jesus, “Lord.” She knew that only Christ could cast out evil spirits. Satan works against man in these ways:
1. Oppression—Satan constantly bothers people.
2. Depression—Satan causes people to worry and become upset.
3. Possession—Satan sometimes lives within people, possessing them and controlling them.
II. The persisting faith—vv. 23–27
II. The persisting faith—vv. 23–27

To persist means to “keep on.” We need to keep on trusting God, regardless of the circumstances.
A. Silence—v. 23a. Jesus said nothing. Perhaps He was testing this woman’s faith. Sometimes God does not answer our prayers immediately. He tests our faith. He tells us to wait.
III. The prevailing faith—vv. 28–31
III. The prevailing faith—vv. 28–31
Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly.
Jesus went on from there and walked beside the Sea of Galilee. And he went up on the mountain and sat down there. And great crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and they put them at his feet, and he healed them, so that the crowd wondered, when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they glorified the God of Israel.
A. Persistence—v. 28. Because of the mother’s persistence, the daughter was healed. If you have prayed and are not healed, don’t give up—keeping praying.
A. Persistence—v. 28. Because of the mother’s persistence, the daughter was healed. If you have prayed and are not healed, don’t give up—keeping praying.
B. Prayer—v. 29. We see Jesus before God in prayer. We are told to take time to wait before God ().
C. Pity—v. 30. All who were crippled were healed. Jesus not only had love; He showed love.
D. Praise—v. 31. The people were filled with praise and wonder. If we allow Christ to work in our lives, others will be filled with praise and wonder.
