A) Introduction
A) Introduction
And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
Review from last week
The word “church” in our English Bible comes from the Greek word Ekklesia. The meaning of the word is a called out, local and purposeful assembly of people.
Exegetically ( A critical explanation or interpretation of a text or portion of a text, especially of the Bible) to universalize the word “church” does injustice to the text.
Therefore, we can only understand the word church(es) in an institutional or a local sense.
The church and the body are synonyms
When did the local church began to lose their power and authority”
Power corrupts
Council of Nicea
B) When did the church (as an institution) begin?
B) When did the church (as an institution) begin?
There are two principle views on the birth of the church:
On the day of Pentecost
This is the official beginning of the New Testament
And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.
The church was empowered on the day of Pentecost
The official start of the great Commission began on the Day of Pentecost
Sometime during the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ
- Jesus promised to build His church
Evidences of the church’s existence before Pentecost
The church was commissioned before Pentecost: first the limited commission of and then the extended commission of .
Ordinances were instituted and observed before Pentecost (; ).

Jesus sang in the church before Pentecost (; ).
There was church discipline before the day of Pentecost ().
There was church discipline before the day of Pentecost ().
The church had a business meeting before Pentecost ().
My guess is sometime after the resurrection of Jesus Christ - Acts 20:28
Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
C) Significance of the birth of the church
C) Significance of the birth of the church
Not all churches belong to Jesus Christ
I do not view myself as a Protestant
Catholicism was never a true church of Jesus Christ
The promise of church perpetuity - Matthew 16:18
And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
D) Can a church lose her authority of being a true church of Jesus Christ?
D) Can a church lose her authority of being a true church of Jesus Christ?
A church can cease being a church belonging to Jesus Christ if their love for Jesus is replaced with anything else.
The presence of the Holy Spirit
In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.
The ground and pillar of truth
But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
E) The Purpose of the Church
E) The Purpose of the Church
Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called:
Revelations 2:1-7
Revelations 2:1
They
Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
Glorify God
Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.
How do we glorify God?
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.
1 Corinthians
That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.
E) The Mission of the Church
E) The Mission of the Church
The Great Commission
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Matt
Worship God - To lick like a dog
Praise God - Psalms 150:1
Praise ye the Lord.
Praise God in his sanctuary:
Praise him in the firmament of his power.
Praise ye the Lord.
Praise God in his sanctuary:
Praise him in the firmament of his power.
Psalms
Encourage one another -
Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
Sacrifice - and
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
Fellowship -
Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
Thanksgiving -
Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.
Serve the Lord with gladness:
Come before his presence with singing.
Truth -
But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
To build up -
How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.
Be different from the world -
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Teach and preach - and
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Colosians 3:16
Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
F) Accountability
F) Accountability
Our success depends upon accountability
For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

Seriousness of Sin
Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.
To win them
Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.
