Introduction
Here we are on this great day, Mother’s day.
Mother’s day is a special time, it is one were we love on and remember those who are so special to us.
Motherhood is a God given blessing in life.
A Mother is one of two people, that form the two components of God’s first institution, the family...
And it is a mother that God uses to bring others into this world, and they love, nurture and bless the home so much.
Mothers are indeed special.
And along with those who give physical birth to children, there are others, sweet ladies who are mothers to so many...
I think of our friend Jenny who is now in the presence of Jesus, and she was a mother to a whole holler of family up there...
So this morning, I want to take a little bit of time and just share with you why mothers are so great and the meaning they hold in our lives...
So this morning lets look at 2 verses and for a few minutes
20 The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.
And....
5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. 6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, 7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
Here we have 3 people, a faithful son who is a young minister of the gospel under the careful eye of Paul, and then there are these two faithful women, his mother and grandmother Eunice and Lois…
Their faith and love for the Lord had been instilled in the life of young Timothy, they had a direct influence in his life.
So what can I saw about you mothers that will bless your life… What can we be thankful for...
1. Lets be Thankful that God Established the Role of Mothers....
1. Lets be Thankful that God Established the Role of Mothers....
At the beginning of creation God did something absolutely wonderful in that God gave Adam a wife, a helpmate and mother of all living things to come from their union.
God saw that man was alone and needed a companion, a helpmate and yes one with whom the family could begin...
And so God gave the world the first family.
Again I will share with you
20 The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.
She would be the first mother...
And can you imagine as her and Adam welcomed their first child, and then another and another into this world...
A world that was once perfect but now touched by sin, and yet she felt the struggle and pain of bringing a child into the world.
And she was a faithful mother..
And as I look at you today, I am reminded that we can be so ever thankful for God’s wonderful gift of mothers.
Your love, nurture and care for your own and your others is indeed something we can stop and give thanks for.. for our God has given you mothers to us. How precious and wonderful you all are to us...
So men, sons and other relatives of our moms, and those who are mothers to us, stop and thank the Lord above for their place in our lives..
Can you imagine where young Timothy would have been without a godly mother and grand mother in their life.
Ladies, thank God for you!
And then secondly...
2. Be thankful for a Mother’s faith...
2. Be thankful for a Mother’s faith...
One of the most beautiful things I can testify about my wife, is her faith and the faith she has helped to instill in our children.
And I know men, I know you can agree with me that your wives and those other ladies connected to our children have played a key role in teaching them the faith.
And they could do this because it started in their lives…
That is one of the things Paul is identifying with in II Tim chapter 1, Paul is saying how thankful he was for for their faith.
Look at our passage
5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. 6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, 7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
The sincere faith he is speaking of here, it was evident in lives of Lois and Eunice.
The word ‘sincere” is incredible here.... it mean it was a faith that did not pretend, these ladies were not hypocrites… it was a lived out very well.
Lois and Eunice, their faith had a direct impact on the life of young Timothy. Their teaching, the way they lived their life, what they said and how they worshipped … it helped shaped Timothy has a young boy and then a young man.
Mothers today, your life will have a direct impact on your children's life, it can be either a good or bad, the decision is yours…
But I look at these little ones here today and I am convinced that you can help set the stage if you will for their future, their future in front of God.
Moms if you model poor things, gossip, forgiveness, poor behaviors, well that is what will influence..
But if you let them see Jesus in you.. they will go forth knowing how to live in front of Jesus.
Susanna Wesley, 17 children and her children saw her spend time with God every day.. from her came John and Charles Wesley …
Notice also that Paul says … that sincere faith that dwelt first in Lois life, was exhibited in Eunice and now young Timothy was a faith that was alive and evident...
Mothers (and Dad’s) let your children see your faith and your service to the Lord, let them see the joy and happiness that comes from not only living for Jesus but also comes from serving others in His name.
Let your children be thankful for your sincere and evident faith....
Now just one last thought my friends...
Now this perhaps this last thought falls to our children, but Moms of little ones, teach them the word and they will soon be aware of it as well.
Now this perhaps this last thought falls to our children, but Moms of little ones, teach them the word and they will soon be aware of it as well.
3. Love your Moms and Never Loose Sight of Them...
3. Love your Moms and Never Loose Sight of Them...
As children, we must never loose sight of how precious our moms are to us.
Stop and think for a minute just how important our moms are to us and just how much they have done for us...
So think of this… They bring us into this world, they love us unconditionally, they provide for us, feed us, makes sure we are well, clothed and blessed… They sacrifice for us in many physical ways ..
But they also do the same for us Spiritually as well.
Paul encourages Timothy to never forget those valuable lessons of the faith that he learned from his mother and grandmother...
I Tim 3
14 I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, 15 if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.
14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
Do you see what Paul says...
He encourages Timothy to never forget what he has learned but also, who he learned all this form… those two precious ladies that have blessed him at every turn...
These ladies taught him the faith and made sure he knew the Word of God in his life … those sacred writings...
Let me ask you a question, question for a moment, what has your mom taught you.. what has your grandmother or aunt thought you.... How have they influenced your life?
Be thankful for your mothers, hold them close and cherish every word and every lesson they instill in you.
Be thankful for your mothers, hold them close and cherish every word and every lesson they instill in you.
Be thankful for them..
They are the gift of God in your lives...
God has established the role of mothers in our lives
Be thankful for thier fiath
and be thankful for that they teach you...
lets pray.
II Tim 1:
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God according to the promise of the life that is in Christ Jesus,
2 To Timothy, my beloved child:
Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3 I thank God whom I serve, as did my ancestors, with a clear conscience, as I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. 4 As I remember your tears, I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy.
Mothers care… Roman 16, was a mother to even Paul, mother to many...
12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.
He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” 4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” 11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
14 The Lord God said to the serpent,
“Because you have done this,
cursed are you above all livestock
and above all beasts of the field;
on your belly you shall go,
and dust you shall eat
all the days of your life.
15 I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise his heel.”
16 To the woman he said,
“I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing;
in pain you shall bring forth children.
Your desire shall be contrary to your husband,
but he shall rule over you.”
17 And to Adam he said,
“Because you have listened to the voice of your wife
and have eaten of the tree
of which I commanded you,
‘You shall not eat of it,’
cursed is the ground because of you;
in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life;
18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you;
and you shall eat the plants of the field.
19 By the sweat of your face
you shall eat bread,
till you return to the ground,
for out of it you were taken;
for you are dust,
and to dust you shall return.”
20 The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. 21 And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.
22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever—” 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken. 24 He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.
