We pick up tonight in . Verses 1 - 4 are a picture of the Reign of Christ here on earth during the millennium. We spoke last time about the term the “Latter Days”.
Does anyone remember what this would have meant to an OT Jew at that time? The time when the Messiah is Reigning on earth.
verses 5 - 9
O house of Jacob, come and let us walk In the light of the LORD. For You have forsaken Your people, the house of Jacob, because they are filled with eastern ways; they are soothsayers like the Philistines, and they are pleased with the children of foreigners. Their land is also full of silver and gold, and there is no end to their treasures; their land is also full of horses, and there is no end to their chariots. Their land is also full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made. People bow down, and each man humbles himself; therefore do not forgive them.
In this section Isaiah is going to be looking forward to the “day of the Lord”. He is speaking to the conditions of the people and their land in the end times.
He begins with exhortation, come and let us walk In the light of the LORD.
After painting the picture of the glory of the Messiah's reign, Isaiah then challenges Judah (house of Jacob) to live in the Messiah's reign right now.
To walk in the light of the LORD means to order your life after God's truth and God's ways. The ultimate reign of the Messiah may be many years away, but Jesus can reign in our lives, in our minds, and in our hearts right now. We don't have to wait for the enforced righteousness of the millennium to have the blessing of Jesus' righteousness in our lives right now.
There are so many obvious parallels to the US right now. Notice what He is pointing out:
Eastern thought, Eastern ways. Mysticism and anything esoteric is what the “cool” kids want to know about. Secret knowledge and special powers. Think of what the popular movies are about today.
Soothsayers - practice sorcery, practice divination, i.e., the foretelling of future events by means of magic or casting spells, with possibly a focus of conjuring dead human or supernatural spirits to appear before the living (; , ; ; ; ; ; ; ; [EB 12]+)
Pleased with the children of foreigners - meaning the make agreements with pagans. Literally to clasp hands with.
Paul exhorts us to not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. Its alway easier to be pulled down than to pull someone up.
Verse 7 sounds so much like America. The land is full of silver and gold. We are so rich and don’t even know it. Partly because every one around is rich as well. At least by comparison to the rest of the world.
Treasures, no end - literally things of high monetary value. Jesus said that we should store up treasures in heaven where moth and rust do not corrupt.
Horses and Chariots - how many cars are there in SoCal? THe say that when Crustchive came to the US in the early 60’s he thought it was a set up because of all the vehicles.
Verse 8 he continues to rebuke their religiousness.
Full of idols -
The work of their own hands -
