Introduction

John 1:1–5 AV 1873
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
John 1:12–14 AV 1873
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
John 1:

God’s Glory Through Christ.

John 17:1 AV 1873
1 These words spake Jesus, and lift up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:
John 17:1–5 AV 1873
1 These words spake Jesus, and lift up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: 2 as thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. 3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. 4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. 5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
John 17:1-
The hour has come
The hour has come (1).
Jesus knew what was around the corner.
When looking at the depth of his sacrifice and situation. . .
His aim was always the Father’s plan and glory.
The Lord uses the drama, perceptions and situations of His children to bring Him glory, making Him known!

God’s Glory Through the Apostles.

John 17:6–8 AV 1873
6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. 7 Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee. 8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.
John 17:6

Defined who they (disciples) are.

Given to Christ by God (6).
They know the Father’s involvement (7).
They are believers—The marker of a believer is the accepting of all God’s truth (8).
John 17:9–11 AV 1873
9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. 10 And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them. 11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.
John 17:9–10 AV 1873
9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. 10 And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.
John 17:9-11

Defined His relationship with them.

They are God’s (9).
Jesus is praying for this specific group, and He is praying for you specifically also.
He is transcendent, actively involved and presently interceding before the Father for His own.
Disciples are glorifiers of Christ (10).
John 17:11–19 AV 1873
11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. 12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. 13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. 18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. 19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.

Physical Separation is not a lack of protection or involvement.

Separated, but called to be single focuses with the Father (11).
Christ cared for them while they were learning (12).
Preparation is important. Each stage of our Christian walk is preparing us for the next stage of Christian growth. Just as the disciples believed Christ and sat to learn from Him, they also had to now adjust to a faith without the physical presence of Christ.
Destruction is upon us, the Father guides and protects through the sealing and quickening power of the spirit.
The world is cruel, but Christ does not want us out of the world (13-19).
Called to the world.
Jesus comes in petition before the Father to deal with the disciples joy.
Christ Joy filled in them:
A hundred years ago, Andrew Murray stated the issue of glorification as:
“As we seek to find out why, with such millions of Christians, the real army of God that is fighting the hosts of darkness is so small, the only answer is—lack of heart. The enthusiasm of the kingdom is missing. And that is because there is so little enthusiasm for the King.—Andrew Murray, Key to the Missionary Problem.
Dawson atriculates the glory problem as
Sanctified from the world.
Hated by the world.
Sent to reach the world.
Dawson explained the real hardship in reaching the lost is not ability, time or personality:
“Many believers search their hearts in condemnation, looking for the arrival of some feeling of benevolence that will propel them into bold evangelism. It will never happen. . . Don’t wait for a feeling of love in order to share Christ with a stranger. You already love your heavenly Father, and you know that this stranger is created by Him, so take those first steps in evangelism because you love God.”

God’s Glory Through All Believers.

John 17:20-26
John 17:20–23 AV 1873
20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; 21 that they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. 22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: 23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
John 17:20–26 AV 1873
20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; 21 that they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. 22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: 23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me. 24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me. 26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.
John 17:20-23

Future converts

Unified in one spirit under Christ (21-22).
Unified body means a strong gospel message and more converts to come (23).
1 Corinthians 2:13 AV 1873
13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
John 17:24–26 AV 1873
24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me. 26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

Believing is a relationship with Christ and Eternity with Him for the Glory of God.

“Jesus ultimate aim for us is that we see and enjoy his glory.”—v. 24.
Ultimately the point of Jesus is doing here is declaring God’s glory, praying for His disciples to glorify God and that all the rest of us would, by His grace, glorify God.
