Intro
This morning we get into more of these familiar and foundational passages from 1 John.
So for review, what heresy was John trying to counter in this letter?
5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.
Note where the message has come from - Jesus.
God is light. Light is phōs. What English words begin with phos?
Darkness is skotia. properly, the darkness due to want of daylight, metaphorically, used of ignorance of divine things, and its associated wickedness, and the resultant misery
The verse ends in καὶ σκοτία ἐν αὐτῷ οὐκ ἔστιν οὐδεμία - and darkness in Him not is, not one thing, oudeis.
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. There is only light no shadows.
If you ever feel like you are in a dark place emotionally, guess Who that is not coming from?
6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.
Fellowship is koinōnia. What does it mean? Community, Joint participation, fellowship.
If we say we have - that is if we say we are continuing to have .. Talk is cheap!
and walk in darkness, literally - but continue to walk in darkness.. Walk means to conduct ones life.
Big picture what’s he saying?
We lie - we continuously lie
practice - again continuously
Expanded: If we say that we are in communion with Christ, but continuously live a life of darkness, we are liars and continuously do not Practice the truth.
What does that say about sin in our daily lives?
7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
If we continue to walk in the light
Lit - Fellowship we continue to have
With who? the saints and the the Father and His Son
Blood is haima. Think of english words… hemophiliac.
cleanses is katharizō . English words? PAI - continually cleanses us, both actually and metaphorically. What If forget to confess something? Stay in fellowship. See abide
all sins - hamartia . How many sins? All!
Expanded- If we continue to walk in the light, we continue to have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son continually cleanses us from all sins.
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.
