When are you coming back?

when you part ways after visiting family members or friends the question we all wonder is when we will see them again.
Today we will see Jesus continuing to teach His disciples what to expect in the near future. He promised that regardless of the difficulties they would face, He would come back to establish His eternal kingdom.

Context

Judgement pronounced 11:1 - 13:37
Jesus prepared His disciples for His departure and some information about His return.
Mark 13:24–25 NRSV
24 “But in those days, after that suffering, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, 25 and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.
Mark

stars will fall

Joel 2:
Joel 2:10 NRSV
10 The earth quakes before them, the heavens tremble. The sun and the moon are darkened, and the stars withdraw their shining.
How do these verses help us to understand the power of Jesus?
Mark 13:26–27 NRSV
26 Then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in clouds’ with great power and glory. 27 Then he will send out the angels, and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.

Daniel 7:13–14 NRSV
13 As I watched in the night visions, I saw one like a human being coming with the clouds of heaven. And he came to the Ancient One and was presented before him. 14 To him was given dominion and glory and kingship, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not pass away, and his kingship is one that shall never be destroyed.
The connection of Jesus as the Messiah
How should His return affect the way we live every day?
Verse 27 tells us that Jesus’ return will mean judgement for unbelievers but a time of restoration for the believer.
What does restoration mean? How does it bring hope?
:
Mark 13:28–31 NRSV
28 “From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. 30 Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
Why did Jesus choose the fig tree as the example?
The trees in this area were mostly evergreen. They did not lose their leaves in winter but the fig tree did. The new budding fig leaves promised that Summer was near.
The fig tree was a reliable example.
In our world today what are some examples of promised change that we can look forward to?
How would you describe the dual meaning of vs, 29, 30?
Dual meaning of verse 29, 30
“these things” could be two different meanings 1- sufferings associated with the fall of Jerusalem in 70 AD or 2- or the great tribulation that will precede the return of Christ.
“this generation” 1- those living at that time who likely saw the events of AD 70 or 2- others have interpreted generation to mean people.
Mark 13:31 NRSV
31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
Mark 13:31
How does this verse provide comfort for us today?
Mark 13:32–37 NRSV
32 “But about that day or hour no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Beware, keep alert; for you do not know when the time will come. 34 It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his slaves in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch. 35 Therefore, keep awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or at dawn, 36 or else he may find you asleep when he comes suddenly. 37 And what I say to you I say to all: Keep awake.”
Mark 13:32-
What word or words were repeated in these verses?
Why would Jesus repeatedly remind us to be alert?
How would you summarize 24-37 in one or two sentences?
