We continue our study of the Trinity today. Who is God?
Holy Spirit- Let’s look at jesus’ words
Context- Jesus knows He is about to be crucified and will go away- if we continue in the passage He even tells them these things- that He will be crucified and resurrect.
He tells them these things-of The Holy Spirit- so they won’t stumble.
First Point- It is impossible to remain faithful to the Lord Jesus without the help of the Holy Spirit.
You will falter, you will fail. There is no amount of effort that can cause a man to follow the Lord with faithfulness. If you are striving and working hard to try, I have good news for you today!
Second Point- Jesus claims it is to their advantage that He goes away.
Jesus was fully God, yet fully man. He submitted Himself to human limitations. If He were to remain He could only teach maybe 3, 4k people at a time, but if He goes and sends the Spirit- The Spirit will lead ALL believers into truth!
It is to our advantage.
This begs the question: What does the Holy Spirit do that is to our advantage?
He Answers what these benefits are for the world right here, and we will explore this. Then we will look at the advantages to us internally as believers then externally from us to the world.
First, he convicts the world of 3 things.
One- Sin because people don’t believe in Jesus. All sin is unbelief in Jesus. The Holy Spirit works on the hearts of men to ensure they recognize their need for a savior.
Two- righteousness. You are a sinner, the world is full of sinners, but Jesus lived righteous and invites us to righteous living. The Holy Spirit sways the hears of men to crave this righteousness.
Three- judgment. Without the sacrifice of Jesus, and faith in Him, we are doomed to face the judgment of God. The Spirit enables men to fear God and desire salvation from said judgment.
The Holy Spirit continues the work of Jesus in every believer.
I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear it now.
As He has readied our heart for revelation, the Spirit brings the revelation and teaches us all truth!
Finally, The Spirit Glorifies Jesus. He is the King of Kings forever amen!
When The Spirit of God enters a man, something becomes profoundly differently about the man from the inside out.
Take Jesus’ very disciple Peter: His life changed radically after meeting Jesus, but his heart changed after receiving the Holy Spirit.
Fisherman, fisher of men. Extraordinarily ordinary.
He had a crazy idea from very young, what if I could be someone who is great?
I wonder if there are any ordinary people here tonight who wish they could be somebody great.
But Peter was bound to be a fisherman! It was a crazy thought until he met Jesus.
Peter I will build my church upon you!
But peter could not be faithful or do the right things.
Examples-
Peter rebukes Jesus when Jesus said He must die.
Peter says he won’t betray Jesus. Even if all these men fall away, I will never deny you- then denies Jesus to a servant girl.
Transfiguration- Jesus in His glory-
This is good, lets build 3 altars…
Until - Jesus breathes on the disciples and says, receive my Spirit. The Holy Spirit.
This was the point of salvation. This was the change.
Now at breakfast- Peter do you love me more than fish?
Yes I love you more than fish
Do you love me? Agape? God like love. The love of the Father?
Less sure- you know all things, you know my love for you.
Do you “love” me? Phileo- friend love. Less committed.
Peter was grieved. He was convicted by the Spirit and accepted the call of Jesus. A changed man on the inside.
Can I become someone great?!
Still loomed.
Jesus ascends- wait in Jerusalem until the Spirit has clothed you in power.
Pentecost- Tongues of fire. Wild scene? How many know God is supernatural?
COME HOLY SPIRIT!
The man Peter who once denied Jesus in front of a servant girl now preaches boldly before the Jewish men and women who crucified Jesus.
Changed on the outside. Now Peter was someone great!
I wonder if anyone here is tired of being normal?
God did not create you for mediocrity. he created you to be great!!!
Second experience not a helpful conversation but most people who I know who change the world regularly speak of this second experience.
My Story!!! I am a normal Peter.
Do you want to be baptized by the Spirit?
Do you want to be filled fresh?
