Joseph the Dreamer
Intro:
Genesis 37:1–4 NASB95
1 Now Jacob lived in the land where his father had sojourned, in the land of Canaan. 2 These are the records of the generations of Jacob. Joseph, when seventeen years of age, was pasturing the flock with his brothers while he was still a youth, along with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives. And Joseph brought back a bad report about them to their father. 3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his sons, because he was the son of his old age; and he made him a varicolored tunic. 4 His brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers; and so they hated him and could not speak to him on friendly terms.
Genesis
I. His dreams disregarded his circumstances. VS 1-4
1. Joseph came from a very dysfunctional family. His was the 11th out of 12 boys. These boys came from his father’s 2 wives and their two servants. His brothers hated him because their father showed favoritism. And he loved him more. (Coat of many colors)
a. He was the favored son/hated brother.
Genesis 37:3 NASB95

a. So part of his circumstances, he had a dysfunctional family.
b. But he had other circumstances that could have hindered his dreams. (His dreams were his life’s plan from God)
1. His brothers conspired against him. 2. He’s thrown in a pit. 3. He’s sold as a salve. 4. Accused of rape and thorn into prison. Forsaken by his family, forgotten by his friend (Cell mate)
c. All these things were apart of God’s plan. He had setbacks, roadblocks, but all help show that his dream was from God.
2. When read about the dreams of Joseph, and how it applies to us today. I thinks about the vision that God has for this church, and for each of us in his life.
a. God has a plan for Pine Grove. I believe that God gives the pastor a vison for the church. But he will also give ministry leaders a vison for their ministry.
b. Not only here in the church, but in your own life. To share Jesus more, go out and invite people to church. Teach a Sunday school class?
c. What circumstances are stopping you or hindering you?
3. What about Pine Grove? I know God wants us to reach the lost with the gospel. But, what we have to disregard our circumstances.
a. We are small. b. We don’t have a lot of young people. c. We don’t have a lot of money.
d. But what can do all that God wants us to do, not matter what our circumstance are.
e. We may have some roadblocks come our way. But is God has a plan, we have to keep on moving.
Genesis 37:4 NASB95
4 His brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers; and so they hated him and could not speak to him on friendly terms.

Genesis 37:
VS 9His position of power.
1. it’s not uncommon in the bible for God to reveal to His servants through dreams.
a. God gave Joseph these dreams, dreams that He may not have understood, but it kept him faithful even when everything seemed to go wrong.
b. What about for us today? Maybe not in dreams, but that may be the case. (I have woken up in the night with thoughts of something to preach about)
c. For the church. God will the pastor the vison for the church. But others in their ministries.
(Elab Bro Archie and the music.)
d. It will be the same with other miniseries.
e. Times when the Lord may speak to someone about the church. (Matt and the bike ministry) He was willing to take charge of an idea (vision) that he had.
f. But, we has to be from God. How do you know? If someone came to me with something they thought the church should do. I would pray about it. Elab.
2. The Lord will also led you. Maybe inviting someone to church. Doing something for someone. Calling someone that hasn’t to church in a awhile.
a. But what circumstances are stopping you? Fear, unsure? The Lords has a way for you.
c. Joseph had a lot of circumstances in his way, but God had a plan.
d. God has a plan for Pine Grove, we can’t let any circumstances stop us.
3. One to always remember and to be prayerful about. There are those that are going to be critical about your dreams, your visions, whatever the Lord calls you to do, or our church to do.
III. His dreams were not derailed by critical people. VS 8;11 READ VERSES AND ELAB
Genesis 37:8 NASB95
8 Then his brothers said to him, “Are you actually going to reign over us? Or are you really going to rule over us?” So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words.

11 His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the saying in mind.
Alexander Graham bell had critics, he was told that the telephone would be a toy that no one would play with.
1904 a Professor of strategy at school of war said “Airplane are an interesting toy, but have no military value”
Almost all invention had it critics.
1. If you want to serve God, you will have your critics.
a. Just go tell a group of unchurched people what the Lords is calling you to do.
b. Maybe even at times other believers. My experience has been, the ones in church are at the most critical or the ones that do the least.
2. People have been critical of our church.
a. We have stayed traditional.
b. Knocking on doors.
