Whom Say Ye That I Am

Matthew 16:13–19 KJV 1900
When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
Identity of Jesus Christ should be a doctrine of which there is no controversy.
The definition of God as is commonly discussed.... if we are going to understand the person we must understand the identity of God. When we talk about God we shouldn’t think of him as a person. God is a Spirit. God is omnipresent, immortal, invisible. This spirit is identified by Jesus as the father. When talking about the father we are talking about God. We are talking about the immortal, invisible omnipresent Spirit. The Father cannot be contained as a person, but is a Spirit. When you read about God you’re reading about the Spirit.
It is imperative to let truth triumph over tradition.
One tradition that is taught and believed is that the Godhead is too complex to understand. That is a tradition, not truth.
This is the primary message of the scripture Hear, O Israel the Lord our God is One Lord.
The most important thing that we must understand about Jesus Christ is that He unlike any other person that has ever lived had a dual nature. He is not just a man but He was God and man.
Jesus was human, wholly man and wholly God.
Galatians 4:4 KJV 1900
But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
Galatians
Luke 2:7 KJV 1900
And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
First proof is that He was born of a woman. That shows his humanity. Secondly, we know that he grew. Myth that Jesus is an angel...... angels don’t grow, but he did.
Luke 2:52 KJV 1900
And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
He grew physically, intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. He was a man.
Third proof is that He got hungry.
M
Matthew 4:2 KJV 1900
And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
The fact that he was hungry tells me he was man. These are qualities ascribed to humanity.
He grew weary.....
John 4:6 KJV 1900
Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.
He was weary with His journey. This is a sign of His humanity
Matthew 8:24 KJV 1900
And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep.
He was asleep. Angels don’t sleep, but He was asleep because He was a man.
John 11:35 KJV 1900
Jesus wept.
John 11:35
John
John 8:40 KJV 1900
But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.
He called himself a man
Matthew 16:13 KJV 1900
When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?
Matthew 16:13
He said I am a man. He said I am the Son of man.
John 19:33 KJV 1900
But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:
He was dead.
1 Corinthians
1 Corinthians 15:3 KJV 1900
For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
Christ died. The bible is clear there were enough scriptural proofs that this was not an angelic being walking the face of the earth. This was a man. He had flesh and bones like we do. He felt pain like we do. He grew tired. He grew hungry. He slept. He died. He was a man. But the beautiful part about it was He wasn’t just a man.
Not Only was Jesus Christ a man, but He was God.
John 20:28 KJV 1900
And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.
Jesus never refused that title. Jesus did not reprimand Thomas and say don’t call me that I’m just a man..... He didn’t say don’t call me that, I’m just an angel. He accepted that worship when Thomas called Him God. So He was not just a man, He was God.
John 8:57–58 KJV 1900
Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
Truly I tell you before Abraham was, I am. He was not yet fifty years old in His flesh, but in His spirit he existed before Abraham. We’ve got to understand the dual nature of this one we call Jesus Christ. He was a man, but He was God.
Isaiah 9:6 KJV 1900
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: And the government shall be upon his shoulder: And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
He’s not just a child, He’s not just the son, but He is the mighty God. There is a duality (separation, difference) to His nature that we must comprehend.
John 21:17 KJV 1900
He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
Luke tells us that as a man He grew He learned He increased in wisdom, but we also find recorded that He knew all things. As a man He learned but as a God there was nothing that He could learn. He knew everything.
Revelation 1:8 KJV 1900
I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
The Almighty. Yeah they described Him as being weak. Yes they said He grew weary but in His spirit as God He said I am the Almighty. A God i’m not weary, as God I’m not weak, as God I am all powerful. dual nature of Jesus Christ.
Mark 2:10 KJV 1900
But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)
John 3:13 KJV 1900
And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
Note: some new translations have taken this out… there are thousands of manuscripts that date back to within a few hundred years of the early church. 97 to 98% of them agree in totality with the King James Bible. The other translations by in large are based on the 2-3% of manuscripts that disagree with the King James Bible. That’s why when you pick up an NIV or an RSV there are verses that are missing. Because they base their translations on manuscripts that are incomplete. If you study the verses that are left out most of them are very crucial. King James goes by the authorized text because 98% of them are totally 100% with each other. No variance.
Present tense. As He spoke standing there looking at Nicodemus, He said what you are seeing right now is not all of me. All you’re seeing is my humanity. And I’m not only in earth, I’m in Heaven right now.
Luke 22:41 KJV 1900
And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,
We find Jesus praying. That shows His humanity
John 14:14 KJV 1900
If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
He said if you pray I’m going to answer. One verse He’s the one praying but in the other one He says if you pray I’m going to answer. It’s a dual nature. We’ve got to understand that He had two natures. He could act and speak as a man, or He could act and speak as God. And you have to ask yourself is He speaking as a man or is He speaking as God. When He said the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak, He was speaking as a man. But when He said all power is given unto me he wasn’t speaking as a man, he was speaking as God. He can act as man or He can act as God. He’s got that potential because of the dual nature of who He was. In Him humanity and deity were fused but not confused. When he assumed a human nature at incarnation He did not cease to be God rather He took on something He did not have. He was not a human before Bethlehem. He’s still what He was but now He’s more. Jesus Christ was God from the beginning but assumed a human nature. And while He walked this earth he had about Him a robe of flesh. And so when you read the gospels you’ve got to ask yourself..... is He now performing in the role of flesh, or is He still performing in that eternal role of the spirit.
This dual nature explains the biblical concept of the person of Jesus Christ fully and comprehensively. If we are going to understanding anything more about Jesus Christ it has got to be built upon this concept, that He had a dual nature.
If we are going to stick to biblical definitions when we talk about the Son of God we must call Him what the bible calls Him. That is the begotten Son of God.
John 3:16 KJV 1900
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
If we are going to talk about the Son of God we have to call Him the begotten Son of God. The words begotten and eternal are direct opposites. The word begotten means to have a beginning the word eternal means that which has no beginning. It was what’s inside of Jesus Christ that His diety existed for ever. When we refer to the Son of God biblically we’ve got to look at the humanity of Jesus Christ. When we look at His son ship we’ve got to look at his humanity. If He was not a human we have no salvation today. If He is not a man we’d have no blood that was shed for us. A spirit could not even die for us. It was when He became a man that He provided for us that eyernal salvation. So we cannot overlook the begotten nature of the Son.
john 4:
John 4:1 KJV 1900
When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,
Hebrews 1:5 KJV 1900
For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?
Tradition says that he was eternally begotten. That’s not what the Bible says. The Bible says there was a day in which He was begotten. Not in His divinity…Jesus Christ has always existed but the humanity had a beginning. The humanity had a starting time. He has not always existed as humanity, but He’s always existed as God. When we talk about the Son of God you can’t call Him “eternally begotten” those two words are contrary. To be begotten is to have a beginning. And Hebrews says on THIS DAY I begat…there was a time, there was a point in which the humanity of Christ had His start. A specific day in which it happened.
1 Timothy 3:16 KJV 1900
And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
God was manifest in the flesh. The word manifest means to make actual or (in Greek) to cause something to exist which hitherto was nonexistent. God created for Himself a body which exists. God took upon Himself a form which had not existed. While He appeared to a man in temporary form over several different occasions. Now God takes on a form that is fully human not just an appearance, not just temporary but He creates for Himself a literal body. That’s why 1 Corinthians tells us that God eas in Christ reconciling the world through Himself.
When we talk about Christ, when we talk about the humanity, there’s a beginning.
Luke 1:35 KJV 1900
And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
The angel said to her the Holy Ghost is going to come on you, and the power is going to overshadow you. Therefore also that Holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. What was born of Mary is what was called the Son of God. That’s why Hebrews says there was a day in which He was begotten that’s why Hebrews tells us there was a specific point. Because when we talk about Son we talk about that which was begotten. That which was human. That which was flesh.
Proverbs 30:4 KJV 1900
Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? Who hath gathered the wind in his fists? Who hath bound the waters in a garment? Who hath established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son’s name, if thou canst tell?
Proverbs 30:4
The problem is that you just skipped to overlooking verse 1.
Proverbs 30:1 KJV 1900
The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, even the prophecy: the man spake unto Ithiel, even unto Ithiel and Ucal,
Proverbs 30:1
He wasn’t talking about what exists now…this was a prophecy of what is to come.
What about the firey furnace?
Daniel 3:25 KJV 1900
He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.
The form of the fourth is like the Son of God. If this was the Son walking in the fire how did this heathen Babylonian king who did not even worship Jehovah God of the Jews have a concept of the Son of God and be able to identify the one walking in the fire as the Son of God? If you go back to the original Hebrew He was “the fourth is likened unto the son of the gods.” His reference was the Babylonian gods that he worshipped and he said there’s something majestic and powerful down there in the midst of that fire with them. But he did not identify the person of the son of God. He couldn’t. It was reflective of divinity as he understood it. He didn’t know what it was but it appeared to him to be something as a man, but it was greater that a man. Even if he did call it “the Son of God” he didn’t have a concept of the Son of God as we do. So he wasn’t identifying this as the person of Christ. He couldn’t be.
1 Corinthians 15:24-28
1 Corinthians 15:24–28 KJV 1900
Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power. For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet. The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith, all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him. And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.
When Jesus shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the father…until every enemy is under His feet. The last enemy is death. But when He says everything is subdued to Him, then shall the Son be subject unto Him that put all things under Him. So that God (the Spirit) may be all in all. The time is coming when that Spirit, when that’s all that’s going to be is the Spirit.
There was a time in which the eternal omniscient, omnipresent Spirit assumed a form and took upon Himself that human form to accomplish what a spirit could not accomplish because all things are cleansed by the shedding of blood and without the shedding of blood is no remission but a spirit doesn’t have blood to shed so if God is going to redeem us He can’t do it in the form of the spirit but what He’s got to do is take on that which He does not possess and so He takes flesh and blood so that when He goes to Calvary there is blood that’s shed not blood that’s contaminated, but blood that is infused by the power of the Father and He shed that blood so that we could be redeemed.
There is a specific role that is assigned and ascribed to the terminology of the Son of God. We’ve got to understand that role. We’ve got to get away from non-biblical terminology like ‘eternally begotten’. No he wasn’t eternally begotten…that means to be born everyday. He’s not born everyday. That’s why men say they can’t understand it. Because they’ve thrown terms in there that aren’t scriptural. But when you take the unscriptual terms out that you begin to understand clearly what’s going on. If you’ll stick to the language of the Bible then you can understand the person of Jesus Christ. It’s when we start throwing all these other things in there that start getting confused. But we need to come to a realization and revelation of the dual nature of Jesus Christ. he’s eternally existed from the beginning, He will eternally exist until the end. But when we say that we’ve also got to realize the role of Son is a very limited role with a specific purpose, and that role of Son is scripturally tied to His days in flesh.
Luke 1:35 KJV 1900
And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
And so what was born of Mary is what we’ve come to know and understand as the Son of God. That’s wy we say Mary was not the mother of God. That’s why we say Mary was not the mother of God, This is again one of those unbiblical terms that have become so common placed because of traditions that have been handed down. Mary was the mother of the son of God. If the Son of God is eternally begotten then Mary would have had to been there in the beginning. Mary wasn’t there in the beginning but Mary was the mother of the Son of God. She was not the mother of God because God is a spirit. Mary didn’t give birth to a spirit. She gave birth to the human side of that One.
