Passage - Matthew 22:15-46
15 Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his words.
16 And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone’s opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances.
17 Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?”
18 But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites?
19 Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius.
20 And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?”
21 They said, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
22 When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away.
23 The same day Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection, and they asked him a question,
24 saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies having no children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.’
25 Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died, and having no offspring left his wife to his brother.
26 So too the second and third, down to the seventh.
27 After them all, the woman died.
28 In the resurrection, therefore, of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all had her.”
29 But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God.
30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.
31 And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God:
32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living.”
33 And when the crowd heard it, they were astonished at his teaching.
34 But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together.
35 And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him.
36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?”
37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.
38 This is the great and first commandment.
39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question,
42 saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.”
43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying,
44 “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feet” ’?
45 If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?”
46 And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.
Prayer
You might be asking “If we are going to be looking at the 7 woe’s found in Chapter 23 why are we reading Chapter 22?”
Great Questions!
Everything that takes place in Chapter 22 leads us up to the 7 Woe’s found in Chapter 23.
In order to understand the Woe’s we need to understand the WHY?
Illustration: Shelly asking the Kids “Are we the same at the house as we are at Church?”
HOW DID THE KIDS SEE US!
Segway: (WE)
How important is it for you to know how people see you?
The culture today would tell us to “Not worry about what other people think of us! How they see us!”
To some degree I would agree!
But lets be honest .... certain people in your life, it does matter.
Is it important for you to know how your SPOUSE see’s you?
Is it important for you to know how your KIDS see you?
Is it important for you to know how your FAMILY (parents/siblings) see you?
Is it important for you to know how your CO-WORKERS see you?
Is it important for you to know how your BOSS see’s you?
In this passage of scripture we see Jesus ask the question in (Vs 42) ..... “What do you think about the Christ?”
A more modern way of asking it would be, “How do you see the Christ (ME)?”
TITLE of the Message ..... “HOW DO YOU SEE ME?”
I think its a great question for us today ..... How do we see Jesus?
Body: (God)
This question is very similar to the one Jesus asked His disciples back in Chapter 16:13 & 15
What led up to this question?
Starting in Vs 15 we see a meeting taking place between the Pharisees, Sadducees, their disciples and the Herodians.
It is taking place off to the side of this crowd that is following Jesus.
The topic of discussion: How to entangle Jesus in His words!
To help us get a better feel of what this means we need to look at this word “Entangle.”
The only place it is used in Scripture.
Literally means: Entrapment
Giving the feel of an interrogation by the police. (Watch those cop shows)
The remainder of Chapter 22 we see 3 attempts to entangle Jesus!
The first attempt ....
Pharisees Disciples & the Herodians.
Buttering him up .... (Vs 16)
“we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, ...”
“You don’t care about anyones opinion and you are not swayed by appearance.”
What they are saying is, “You don’t care about what people think of You?”
The question they issue to try and entangle Jesus is found in (Vs 17 “Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?”)
This is in reference to “THE LAW OF THE LAND!”
Jesus say’s “Why do you test me?” And calls them Hypocrites. (We will look at this term Hypocrites next week.)
He tells them to “pull out a coin!” “Who is on this coin?” Then give to Caesar what is Caesars and give to God what is God’s.
The Pharisees Disciples and Herodians MARVELED at what Jesus said.
Mind Blown!
(Jesus 1- Religious leaders 0)
The second attempt ....
The Sadducees
No buttering up of Jesus
They do acknowledge him as “Teacher”
They give Jesus an illustration found in Due. 25:5
Guys has 6 brothers (None married except the oldest brother)
He dies and the next brother in line takes his widow as his wife and he dies.
This goes on until all 7 brothers married her.
The question they issue to try and entangle Jesus is found in (Vs 28 “ In the resurrection, therefore, of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all had her.”)
In the resurrection, therefore, of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all had her.”)
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.”)
This is in reference to “THE LAW OF MOSES!”
(Vs 29) Jesus say’s you are wrong because you don’t know scripture nor the power of God.
He then recites .
Scripture tells us that the Crowd was Astonished at what Jesus said. (Jesus 2- Religious leaders 0)
The Third and final attempt ....
The Pharisees
They elect 1 Lawyer.
No buttering up!
The question they issue to try and entangle Jesus is found in (Vs 36 “Teacher, Which in the great commandment in the Law?”
This is in reference to “THE LAW OF GOD!”
Jesus answers their question by reciting scripture: Duet. 6:5
“You shall Love the Lord with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”
But Jesus gives them #2 as well … “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
And he states his reasoning of these 2, “on these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
Scripture tells us that no one was able to say anything in rebuttal to what Jesus had shared.
As a matter of fact Scripture tells us no one dared to ask Jesus any more questions. (Jesus 3- Religious leaders 0)
All three attempts spawned from this idea:
The Law of the Land
The Law of Moses
The Law of God
I get this feeling that Jesus has had enough of their questioning and turns to ask them a question himself.
(42) “What do you think of the Christ?”
Jesus is not asking about the Law (Land, Moses, or God)
Jesus is asking about Himself.
He wasn’t doing this to try and trip them up.
He wants to know “What do you think about me?”
Jesus Finds out how they see Him .... “Son of David!”
Not a Divine position but an honorable one (WRONG)
We should always see Jesus in His Holy, Divine position .... Not as a good buddy!
He corrects them with scripture
Climax: (You)
Jesus is wanting to know exactly what we would like to know ....
How does our Spouse see us?
How does our Kids see us?
How does our Family see us?
How does our Co-workers see us?
How does our Boss see us?
So this brings us to the ultimate question for us .....
“HOW DO WE SEE JESUS?”
Conclusion: (We)
Keeping the law of the land, the Law of Moses, or the 10 Commandments. These are important but ...
What Jesus cares about is “How do you see Him?”
I think what Jesus is saying, “If you knew me you wouldn’t be asking these questions.”
In knowing the one true Jesus ....
Keeping the law of the land, the law of Moses, or keeping the 10 commandments becomes a byproduct of how you see Him!
I am not going to steal because of how I see Jesus!
I am going to serve Christ by serving my family, friends, and strangers!
I am going Love God with all my heart, soul and mind and my neighbor as myself.
Unfortunately there are a lot of “FALSE JESUS’s” in our world today!
How we see Jesus will determine whether we know the True Jesus.
How can we see the one true Jesus.
Let’s be honest .... there are multiple Jesus out there today.
It was made quite clear in this passage ....
So you might be asking, “How can I know the one true Jesus?”
“How can I see Him!” 2 Ways!
How we can see the one true Jesus is through THE WORD!
Good godly people in your life! “Get to know them!”
God’s Word! Get in the Word!”
This group of leaders tried to entangle Jesus in His own words but it was through the WORD he combatted their attempt.
( ) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was in the beginning with God.
How do you see Jesus today?
Mean guy who wont give you want you want!
Careless, unloving, deaf, or out of reach?
or
Loving, righteous, forgiving, compassionate, caring, always there!
This is what the Word says!
