The Method

Main Point:
10,10 80 method
Tithe, Save, Spend ( needs and wants)
10, 10, 80.
Everybody say it with me…10. 10. 80!
If you can remember these numbers it will help you a lot with money.
So what does it mean? Is it a code of some sort? A combination to a safe with endless cash … yeah, that’ll change your life forever.
Sorry to say it, but no, it’s not any of those things.
10, 10, 80 is a formula, a rule, a principle for money. And here’s how it goes:
First and foremost … you tithe 10% of your money. After you’ve done that, you save 10% of your money. And once you’ve done those things, you can spend and give 80% of your money as you need to and want to. So let’s dive into these a little deeper.
Tithe 10%:
When you get a check or a paycheck, this should be the first thing that you do. You should take 10% out of it and tithe it.
So what is a tithe? A tithe is the first portion (literally means tenth) of your money that you give to the local church. It represents that you know that God is your provider and that it’s all His anyways. You’re basically saying, “Here God, I trust You. I give You back the first of anything I make.”
This is one of the most important things you could do with your money. It grows your faith, it helps you put your trust in God, and keeps things in the perspective that it’s all God’s anyways.
When we tithe it should be out of a thankful heart, and for no other reason but what we’ve already talked about.
But God does make a promise to us when we tithe. Look at what it says in . *This is from the NCV.
“Bring to the storehouse a full tenth of what you earn so there will be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord All-Powerful. “I will open the windows of heaven for you and pour out all the blessings you need.”
This is the only place where God tell us to test Him. He promises that when we tithe because we want to and with a thankful heart, that He will bless us because of it.
Now this doesn’t mean that you should give to get, because that defeats the point of tithing. But God is saying that it’s so important to Him, that He will continue to return the favor so to speak.
And this also doesn’t mean that when you tithe you’ll get brand-new, shiny things or phone upgrades. It just means that God sees our tithe, and will continue to take care of us through it.
So there’s the tithe. It’s the first 10% of what we make that should go back to God through the local church.
Save 10%:
One of the worst things you could do in your life is to go into debt. Debt is like being handcuffed and shackled to a cold, stone wall while being locked up in a prison cell. The bigger the debt you have, the less freedom you’ll have. Saving solves the debt problem.
Look at what you could do by saving (These next few examples comes from Dave Ramsey):
If you worked 10 hours per week at minimum wage and saved that up for 1 year you would end up with $3,000.
Now that’s pretty cool but check this out … this will blow your mind …
Show chart and stats from this link:
http://www.daveramsey.com/article/how-teens-can-become-millionaires/lifeandmoney_kidsandmoney/
If you follow that chart, you will end up multimillionaires, and then you can help me out later on in life when I might need it.
If you can learn to save now and avoid debt then you’ll be more likely to go after whatever dreams you may have.
*This is from the NCV.
On the first day of every week, each one of you should put aside money as you have been blessed. Save it up so you will not have to collect money after I come.
So first tithe 10%, then save 10%, and finally …
Spend/give 80%:
You get to do what ever you want with this last 80%! If you had $1 that would be 80 cents! To do whatever you want with! You could pay some bills … which many of you don’t have yet. You can buy some things that you want! You could even use it to help some other people out. It’s yours to do what you want!
Tell about the most fun purchase you’ve ever made.
This 80% can even be used for some great things like helping other people out.
Tell about a time you used your money to help someone or someone helped you out.
Let me ask you a question:
How many of you would rather RECEIVE gifts? It’s more fun for you to open presents.
How many of you love to GIVE gifts? It’s more fun for you to watch people open the presents you gave them.
So, here’s the thing … I would even go further in this 80% than just spending it on whatever we want.
*This is from the ESV.
Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
Like I said earlier, money isn’t good or bad until we use it a certain way. So, let’s use it for good. Let’s use it to help people. Let’s be people who are known for being generous.
And my prayer for you is that you’ll get this principle, this formula down:
First 10% - Tithe
Next 10% - Save
Last 80% - Spend and give
Once you get that down and start to actually do it, you’ll begin to live in such a way that you’ll be setting your future up for great success and allowing yourself to be open to do what ever God has in store for you.
