Mark 8:31
Mark 8:31 NASB95
And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.
According to this verse there are four things that must happen:
He must suffer
Be rejected
Be killed
Be resurrected.
Peter doesn’t like the sound of that. The reality is here that Peter only listens to the first three. He doesn’t acknowledge the resurrection part, he is worried about suffering, rejected, killed.
I think Peter is wondering here why on earth these things would need to happen?
Why must these things happen?
Lets answer that?
Because the Father has planned this to save us.
Jesus says these things must happen, because they really must. He has to do this, because it is the Father’s will.
John 6:38 NASB95
“For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
At this point, we tend to be like Peter.
We lack trust, and we fail to listen.
We tend to ask the same question in our lives and struggles.
Why must these things happen?
I know you said in
Romans 8:28 NASB95
And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
I know he said that, but, but, but why this?
Isn’t there a better way?
We begin to rebuke God, because we don’t listen and we lack trust.
Peter isn’t listening. Peter isn’t trusting. This leads to Peter speaking and acting foolishly.
Its not as if Jesus wasn’t clear.
look at what it says in the next verse.
Mark 8:32 NASB95
And He was stating the matter plainly. And Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him.
Jesus is speaking plainly. Matter fact, this would have been one of the first times his language would have been specific. This is what I have to do.
Despite the clarity of Christ, Peter thinks he knows best.
And again, I know I see myself in this, how often are we like this.
The Word of God is clear. Perpescuity of Scripture.
In short, the doctrine of perspicuity means that the central message of the Bible is clear and understandable and that the Bible itself can be properly interpreted in a normal, literal sense.
How often do we take what God has been clear on and argue against it?
How often do we think we have a better way? (This past Sunday- Example)
This is wrong.
This says that we think we know better than God or worse we tell God what he ought to do and what he ought not to do, as if we were Holy, without spot or blemish.
Why do you think Peter did this? Get asnwers.
He’s not listening
He’s not trusting.
He’s worried about himself. Self preservation. Some may want to give Peter the benefit of the doubt here but Jesus doesn’t.
Mark 8:33 NASB95
But turning around and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind Me, Satan; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.”
Jesus tells Peter, “Essentially, you are doing the will of Satan right now by trying to prevent me from doing the will of the Father.”
You mind isn’t on God’s interest. Your mind is on your own interest.
And again, lets apply this.
Our desires and our prayers lack I believe because:
We aren’t listening.
We lack faith- trust
We are focused on the world, our selves, or our interests, rather than God.
This is why Jesus goes onto explain what being a true disciple of Christ looks like.
Mark 8:34–38 NASB95
And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul? “For what will a man give in exchange for his soul? “For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”
Mark 8:34–35 NASB95
And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.
It comes by giving up your life. You interest. Rather than self preservation, it is a life that is lived like Jesus. Jesus gave up his life, and if we follow him faithfully, it will mean our own self denial as well.
But Peter doesn’t see this yet.
Acts 4:13–31 NASB95
Now as they observed the confidence of Peter and John and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed, and began to recognize them as having been with Jesus. And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say in reply. But when they had ordered them to leave the Council, they began to confer with one another, saying, “What shall we do with these men? For the fact that a noteworthy miracle has taken place through them is apparent to all who live in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. “But so that it will not spread any further among the people, let us warn them to speak no longer to any man in this name.” And when they had summoned them, they commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to give heed to you rather than to God, you be the judge; for we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.” When they had threatened them further, they let them go (finding no basis on which to punish them) on account of the people, because they were all glorifying God for what had happened; for the man was more than forty years old on whom this miracle of healing had been performed. When they had been released, they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them. And when they heard this, they lifted their voices to God with one accord and said, “O Lord, it is You who made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and all that is in them, who by the Holy Spirit, through the mouth of our father David Your servant, said, Why did the Gentiles rage, And the peoples devise futile things? The kings of the earth took their stand, And the rulers were gathered together Against the Lord and against His Christ.’ “For truly in this city there were gathered together against Your holy servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose predestined to occur. “And now, Lord, take note of their threats, and grant that Your bond-servants may speak Your word with all confidence, while You extend Your hand to heal, and signs and wonders take place through the name of Your holy servant Jesus.” And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness.
Acts 4:13-31
Acts 5:40–41 NASB95
They took his advice; and after calling the apostles in, they flogged them and ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and then released them. So they went on their way from the presence of the Council, rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame for His name.
