Church 101: 8 weeks on the who, what, when, where, and why of local church
Church 101: 8 weeks on the who, what, when, where, and why of local church
The Local Church is God’s plan for the Church

Conversion
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
mt 16:15-18
If the common confession of Jesus as Lord is foundational to Jesus building His Church, then we had best get conversion right as a church of Jesus today
Am I Saved?
Am I Saved?
You can know
You can know
Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall.
Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!
Experience(s)
Experience(s)
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,

Fruit
Fruit
“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.
By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.
Christ
Christ
Whether questioning, secure, or absent of any assurance, looking to Christ is the answer!
For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness,
Peter was an eye-witness to the life and ministry of Jesus and he knew that the right path for salvation, for assurance, and for fruitfulness was in following Christ Jesus.
How am I saved?
How am I saved?
and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
Faith Happens!
So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
VIII. Of Repentance and Faith
VIII. Of Repentance and Faith
For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
We believe that repentance and faith are sacred duties and also inseparable graces, wrought in our souls by the regenerating Spirit of God; whereby being deeply convinced of our guilt, danger and helplessness, and of the way of salvation by Christ, we turn to God with unfeigned contrition, confession and supplication for mercy; at the same time heartily receiving the Lord Jesus Christ as our Prophet, Priest and King, and relying on him alone as the only and all-sufficient Saviour
For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.”
What am I saved from?
What am I saved from?
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
Pictures of God’s judgment:
Blood required in
The flood of Judgment
Sodom and Gomorrah
And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’
and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’
lk 16:
he also will drink the wine of God’s wrath, poured full strength into the cup of his anger, and he will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night, these worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name.”
In the final analysis we are either like the crowd yelling “crucify him!” by our thoughts, words, deeds, and choices; by continual rejection of the law and gospel of God, or else we are the woman washing Jesus’ feet with our tears and hair.
We are saved from the just wrath of God upon our sins.
Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.
We are saved from the just wrath of God upon our sins.
What am I saved for?
What am I saved for?
The Glory of God in this life
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Good works are those prescribed by God
Good works are not required to be saved; they are required for all who are saved
The Glory of God for eternity
even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
All of human history is the story of God revealing His glory by rescuing fallen humanity through Jesus Christ; preparing an eternal kingdom, a family, a bride. Repent and believe the gospel; be saved today for life and for eternity!
