David’s Desire

Note the initial setting for when David has these thoughts regarding God’s tabernacle and dwelling place:
2 Samuel 7:1 KJV 1900
And it came to pass, when the king sat in his house, and the Lord had given him rest round about from all his enemies;
“… the Lord had given him rest round about from all his enemies…”
It was now a time of peace.
How often do our hearts in a time of peace or rest reflect upon the Lord? Or are we quick to jump into a pleasure or sin?
And how important it is to have a time of rest from our labour?
In this narrative we start by seeing a request from David to have God’s ark, which has now been relocated to the city where he dwells to be housed more formally, instead of in a tent.
David makes his request known unto Nathan the prophet and Nathan initially bids him to do that which is in his heart ().
However, God’s request is for David not to build him a house that the timing is premature and that God will have a house built but by his son.
What is God’s reason for NOT allowing David to construct a house?
God emphasises the reasoning for it in - David was not qualified to build the temple, but was not condemned.
In this passage it’s not mentioned, and God defers the builder to his son.
But notice after this passage how when God confirms David’s throne it appears to embolden David a little more, because in our next chapter we read David conquering quite a few nations!
Sadly though, it does then lift up a heart of pride. And we read in that towards the end of his life
If God were to refuse a ministry or opportunity you felt led to undertake, how many of you knowing you couldn’t lead it, would still help out in a major way?
One such instance where this could be seen is in pre-marriage relationships. Perhaps it is not meant to be, and if so how honourable will you still be to one another?
1 Chronicles 22:1–5 KJV 1900
Then David said, This is the house of the Lord God, and this is the altar of the burnt offering for Israel. And David commanded to gather together the strangers that were in the land of Israel; and he set masons to hew wrought stones to build the house of God. And David prepared iron in abundance for the nails for the doors of the gates, and for the joinings; and brass in abundance without weight; Also cedar trees in abundance: for the Zidonians and they of Tyre brought much cedar wood to David. And David said, Solomon my son is young and tender, and the house that is to be builded for the Lord must be exceeding magnifical, of fame and of glory throughout all countries: I will therefore now make preparation for it. So David prepared abundantly before his death.
