The Call to Discipleship
Luke 5:1-11
This is Peter, James, and John’s call to discipleship.
Here Jesus is calling them to follow Him!
I think this parallels or call too!
In these verses you will see why they left their nets to follow Jesus.
I want to focus on 3 statements Jesus made in this passage.
1st Statement (v 3) “Thrust out a
little from the land.”
i.e.
Thrust out from the crowd.
From there Jesus could teach Peter, James, and John and the multitudes.
a.
To be a disciple begins with learning at
Jesus feet!
Whether studying with multitudes at church or in your daily quiet time - walking with Jesus every day is a must!
To really do so we must thrust out from the crowd and find some alone time to be with Jesus.
b.
We must thrust out from the land of
security!
The land represents safety and security.
This thrusting out from the land represents leaving our comfort zones!
Comfort is a detriment to developing our faith!
For years we have sat on the same pew, serving on the same committees, and done the same things!
Change is needed to rejuvenate us and challenge us to serve God more than we have been doing!
c.
We must thrust out from the ordinary!
We need this to get us out of the rut we are in!
Change can do this for us!
Doing a block party at Jordan Park will be something we have never done before!
It might be a little uncomfortable for some of us.
It will get us out of the security of our property, out there were those without Christ are!
Out of our comfort zones, but where the needs are!
2nd Statement (v 4) “Launch out
into the deep”
a. Launch out into the depths of God’s
Word!
We can’t stay in the milk of the word.
We don’t want to be shallow in the scriptures all our lives, do we?
Jesus doesn’t want that either!
That’s why He stood in the boat to teach them.
Hebrews
If you aren’t studying your Bible everyday, you will remain babes in Christ.
You want to graduate from the milk of the Word to the meat of the Word!
Children can’t wait to grow older, were they can get a drivers licence and later get out on their own.
But for some reason, spiritually, we have no urgency or work ethic to study and grow to be adults spiritually.
b.
Launch our into the depth’s of God’s Love!
Our motivation is God’s love!
We have our quiet time because we love God and want to spend time with Him.
We love the things God loves and we hate the things God hates!
He loves people, but hates sin!
We must differentiate between the two!
If they are lost, the only meaningful conversation we should be having with them, isn’t about their sin, but about the gospel message!
Because God loves people and hates their sin, we must carry them the cure for sin - The Gospel! (ABC’s of Salvation)
3rd Statement (v 4) “Let down your
nests for a draught.”
draught gr. a catching
It’s the total catch!
It’s what happens when you put all your nets in the water in obedience to Jesus!
a.
It is a command from Christ!
Before He could ask them to fully follow Him, He had to make sure they would obey Him.
They had fished all night and caught nothing, but they cast out their net one more time at Jesus command they filled their net till it was breaking!
That’s what happens when we quite doing it our way, and begin doing what He tell us!
Don’t think He well speak to you in your quiet time, if you aren’t willing to obey Him!
We are not really fully disciples, until we respect His authority, and obey Him when He commands us to!
Also, He didn’t say “net” He said “nets”, plural.
Our nets are our resources that He has given us.
They are ourselves, our talents, our spiritual gifts, our finances, and etc!
To be a disciple of Christ, we must put down all our nets and give Him all we have got!
b.
We must obey in genuine faith.
(v 5)
Luke
If we are to be followers of Jesus, we must obey him in faith, step out in faith, even when we don’t understand, or know where He is taking us! (Abraham)
“Count it as if it is so, when it is not so, in order for it to be so.”
Manley Beasley
c.
We must obey expecting a
miraculous outcome!
(v 6)
Ephes
God can do miraculous things through us who will Truly be His disciples!
