Introduction

Jesus continues to answer the questions given to him by his disciples after he foretold them the temple would be destroyed and not one stone would be left on another.
When will these things be?
What will be the signs that these things are going to be accomplished
Matthew the same conversation he is asked another specific questions. What will the sign be of your coming? The coming of the end of the age?
This is important because- the disciples Where thrown off by Jesus saying the temple would be destroyed. The temple was the place where the presence of God was. How could this happen? It would have been the end of the world for them.
When they asked Jesus about the end of the age? and the sign of his coming? In the near future/ contrasted without the known fact of a second coming.
Last week we focused on verses 14-18 Jesus introduces a phrase first coined by the prophet Daniel. If you missed that teaching go and have a listen. The abomination that causes desolation. Mark says in verse 14 let the reader understand.
Historically, the first fulfillment of Daniel’s prophetic use of the expression () was the desecration of the temple in 167 B.C. by the Syrian ruler Antiochus Epiphanes. He erected an altar to the pagan Greek god Zeus over the altar of burnt offering and sacrificed a pig on it
Jesus says in this same discourse, when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies go and flee to the mountains. In verses 15-18 Jesus gives warning to the believers who will see this come to past in about 40 yr He tells them to run and get out of the city. In 70 AD Jerusalem as destroyed and the temple was burned to the ground. (All the gold melted into the foundation) not one stone was left. The prophesy of “not one stone will be left not unturned” was fulfilled. but remember they asked about the end of the age and about his coming into his kingdom. Here is where Jesus gives more information for just the immediate future because there was more too his ministry than they understood.
Jesus says in this same discourse, when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies go and flee to the mountains. In 70 AD Jerusalem as destroyed and the temple was burned to the ground. (All the gold melted into the foundation) not one stone was left.
The abomination of desolation that took place in 167 BC and 70 AD were just foreshadows of the final one when the antichrist. The man of lawlessness spoke of in 2 Thess. We know Jesus here is this verse is speaking about a person rather than a thing, because of the gramatical construction of the verse.
Mark used the masculine participle “standing” (hestēkota, masc. perf. part.) to modify the neuter noun “abomination” (bdelygma; v. 14). This suggests that “the abomination” is a future person “standing where he (NIV marg.) does not belong.”
This person is the end-time Antichrist
As we go on we will be able to put some of the pieces together and make proper interpretation of what Jesus is saying.
let us move on into the next section let us read together please stand for the reading of God’s word

The coming Tribulation

Jesus now introduces a new term into the discourse. That is Tribulation.
Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon 2347 θλῖψις

thlipsis

in verse 19 he says such tribulation has not been from the beginning of creation that God created until now and never will be.
Ok we need to ask our selves a few question about this Tribulation
Who is this tribulation for?
What is the Tribulation?
Why is there going to be a Tribulation?

Who is the tribulation for and for what purpose?

The primary reason for such a time is the salvation of Isreal. Isreal is still in a state of rebellion and has rejected the messiah. The tribulation is know as the time of Jacob’s trouble in the bible
God made a covenant with Isreal and they broke the covenant. The people of Isreal were judged by God in 70 AD for the rejection of the Messiah and scattered away from their land.
Jeremiah 30:3 ESV
For behold, days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will restore the fortunes of my people, Israel and Judah, says the Lord, and I will bring them back to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall take possession of it.”
God began to bring restoration in after the judgement in 70 AD which was a foreshadow of this tribulation.
in May of 1948 Isreal was reborn. But the land is still mostly controlled by Gentiles. The age of the Gentiles has not ended for Isreal and they have still rejected Jesus. This tribulation Jesus is talking about is in the future.
Daniel 12:1–2 ESV
“At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the book. And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
Jeremiah 30:7 ESV
Alas! That day is so great there is none like it; it is a time of distress for Jacob; yet he shall be saved out of it.
Jeremiah 30:3 ESV
For behold, days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will restore the fortunes of my people, Israel and Judah, says the Lord, and I will bring them back to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall take possession of it.”
Dan and Jeremiah sound simular in the fact they say this tribulation is unique. Jesus said never been that bad and never will be, Dan says such as never been since there was a nation till that time, and Jeremiah says that day is so great there is none like it
Jeremiah 30:8–11 ESV
“And it shall come to pass in that day, declares the Lord of hosts, that I will break his yoke from off your neck, and I will burst your bonds, and foreigners shall no more make a servant of him. But they shall serve the Lord their God and David their king, whom I will raise up for them. “Then fear not, O Jacob my servant, declares the Lord, nor be dismayed, O Israel; for behold, I will save you from far away, and your offspring from the land of their captivity. Jacob shall return and have quiet and ease, and none shall make him afraid. For I am with you to save you, declares the Lord; I will make a full end of all the nations among whom I scattered you, but of you I will not make a full end. I will discipline you in just measure, and I will by no means leave you unpunished.
Primarily the tribulation is for Isreal and for its salvation and repentance. But the tribulation is also for the nations that have rejected God.
Judgment first for the Jew and then the gentile. NO one will escape the wrath of God. His is mighty in Justice and judgment but he is full of mercy and Grace. Seek the one and only savior Jesus!
look at with me at
Jeremiah 30:8–11 ESV
He says I will make a full end of all the nations. Meaning the gentiles, but who will be saved Isreal. He says I will discipline you and you by no means will not go unpunished, but of you I will not make a full end. This will set up the new age. The millennial kingdom.

What is the tribulation?

We already established it is a time of divine judgment, affliction. The book of Rev has future events as it relates to this judgement
There are seven seals of a scroll that will be opened
There are seven trumpets each part of judgement
There are seven bowls of Gods wrath to be poured out

When and for how long

I believe the bible teaches this period of Tribulation will be for a 7 year period of Time
It will broken into two 3 1/2 year period of time. The bible says the tribulation and the great tribulation for the latter 3 1/2 period of time.
The prophet Daniel gives us some clues into the length of time so lets go to and break this down
In starting in verse 24 we are told seventy weeks are decreed about the people of Isreal to finish Transgression and put an end to sin and atone for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal both vision and prophet and to anoint a most holy place.
(Seventy Sevens) refers to seven years = 490 yrs
This count down begin at the call for rebuild the temple and the walls of Jer after Neb destroyed it
verse 25 of tells us here it tells us seven weeks which is 49 years and the it says sixty two weeks which is 434 yrs which is 483 years. This is why Jesus was upset with the phar when he rode into Jere in Palm Sunday and said you of all people should have known of my coming. It was prophesied to the day in verse where it says the coming of the “anointed one” thats Jesus.
It also says anointed one shall be cut off and thats what happen. He was crucified.
So we have 483 yrs that were fulfilled in this prophesy. If 490 yr were decreed, we take 490-483 we get 7 years left. This is very important
After Jesus was killed, look with me in the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. This happened in 70 AD just like Jesus told the disciples. but we has a 7 year period of time left floating to fullfill the rest of the prophesy
This is were the tribulation period comes in. Remember it is about the judgement yet salvation of Isreal and the judgement of the nations. As Dan said to “finish transgression and put an end to sin and atone for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness. For Jesus to reign as king forever with his people.
Read with me verse 27
Daniel 9:27 ESV
And he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week, and for half of the week he shall put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate, until the decreed end is poured out on the desolator.”
So the temple was destroyed in 70 AD and the 490 years was put on pause. 483 was fullfilled. But Here sometime in the future the last 7 years will begin.
Someone will make a covenant with Isreal for 1 week (7 year period of time and the temple will be rebuilt) Sacrifices and offering will begin again in the temple. But halfway through this time the covenant will be broken and the temple will be made desolate to the jews.
So we know the tribulation will be 7 years, we also know there will be a new Jewish temple in Jerusalem. The tribulation is broken into 2 halves which is the Tribulation and the great tribulation.

False signs and wonders

Come back with me to
Mark 13:
Mark 13:21–23 ESV
And then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it. For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform signs and wonders, to lead astray, if possible, the elect. But be on guard; I have told you all things beforehand.
One of the things that will mark this period of time is deception.
1 Timothy 4:1 ESV
Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons,
There is a great falling away from the bible and from truth before this period. The land scape is being prepared for deception with signs and wonders. When people do not know the Word of God they have no truth to compare what they are hearing or seeing. They will be deceived.
Part of the judgement is deception read with me
2 Thessalonians 2:3–12 ESV
Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God. Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? And you know what is restraining him now so that he may be revealed in his time. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. Only he who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming. The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
2 Thessalonians 2:1–12 ESV
Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we ask you, brothers, not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by a spirit or a spoken word, or a letter seeming to be from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come.

Jesus here warns his followers to include us not to be deceived. To be on guard to be aware.

Conclusion

We learned the tribulation is a 7 year period of time coming in the near future. This will be the 70 th week of
We learned it is for the judgement/discipline and ultimately the salvation of Isreal. It is also the judgement of the gentile nations for their rejection of God. This will set up the Mill kingdom which is a thousand year period of time
We learned this period of history is unique, it has never been that bad nor will it ever be that bad again.
IF you come back next week we will find out what the bible says in regards to the church during this period of time.
Jesus gave us signs to be watching for. He told us there would be birth pains.
Do you recognize the time we are living in? How is your heart? are you ready to meet the Lord Jesus?
Do you make the most of the time we have left? the time is ticking. There is nothing that will stop it, all of this will come to pass. How is your relationship with the savior now?
Would you be willing to change your priorities? Will you mark this day as the day you start living completely for Jesus ?
