For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
Do you ever wonder just how you are doing spiritually? Have you ever thought, “If today were the day I stood before God, would He say, ‘Well done’?”
Now, I wouldn’t have verbalized it that way. I would not have admitted that to anyone, but my life certainly did.
However, the Bible tells us that God looks elsewhere to determine our spirituality. He doesn’t look at what we do to im
However,
What does Christ look at to determine “Well done”?
Some would say that He looks at how many times you have read your Bible. Others may say He looks at your church attendance record. Still others may say that “Well done” depends upon how many people you have led to faith in Jesus.
We have probably all been guilty of taking that perspective, and we have had a tendency to develop attitudes that were less than Christ-like as a result.
This is why it is critical that we always look to God’s Word for our answer.
For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
Love
That is what Jesus looks at - our love.
In fact, it was so important to Him that He said love was the key to keeping the commandments. He summed them all up in two statements.
A Pharisee came and asked Him what was the greatest commandment. To which He responded,
For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
Matthew 22:36-3
We often hear about love, and it should be no surprise to any of us that what we usually hear called love could not be further from the real thing.
For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.

Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.
Cain - the wrong kind of love
Cain - the wrong kind of love
Here is a man who hated his own brother - his own flesh and blood.
If you were to ask him, “Cain, do you love Abel?” He would have certainly answered, “Of course! He is my brother!”
But that made no difference when God accepted Abel’s offering and rejected Cain’s. God told Cain how to make it right, but he paid no attention. Cain let his envy stew until he was a cauldron of bitterness boiling within. He walked with Abel out into the fields one day, found an opportunity to get even, and killed his own brother.
Cain - the wrong kind of love
Cain - the wrong kind of love
He did not like his offering being rejected. That was an affront to his pride. He was embarrassed. He became bitter. His brother was a constant reminder of that ordeal.
His brother was a constant reminder of that ordeal.
An envious, bitter brother allowed his pride to turn envy into hate, and now Cain has the blood of his brother Abel on his hands.
If a brother can hate brother, it should not surprise us when the world hates us.
Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.
When we walk with Christ, the world will resist the light of His holiness shining through us, and they will hate us for it. We will not have to say anything. Just our presence and His presence within us makes the unbeliever very uncomfortable.

We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
1 John 3:
Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
This is not saying that a murderer cannot get saved. Paul, David, Moses, and others in the Bible were murderers and became children of God. 1 John is saying here that a child of God cannot continually live with constant hatred in their heart.
Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.
How will we live?
1 John 3:12

Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
1 John 3:
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
Christian Love
Christian Love
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother hath need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence towards God. And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:
Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.
Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.
What is one thing you can do today to serve someone around you?
Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:
Christ - the right kind of love

1 John 3:16
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:
Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
What is one thing you can do this week to show the love of Christ to an unbeliever?

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Love does not take advantage of them
Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:

Love does not abuse people
Love does not withhold compassion

1 Corinthians 13:1
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
Live it!

So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:

What can I do to love someone like Jesus?
