Jesus at the well (woman from samaria)

John 4:4–14 ESV
And he had to pass through Samaria. So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour. A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
John 4:
So what is water?
Water is fluid and is necessary for our existence
the average adult is 50 to 65% water
so as you can see, water is definitely necessary for human beings
So then what is a well?
A well is a pit or cylinderical hole, sunk perpendicular into the earth to such a depth as to reach a supply of water, and walled with stone to prevent the earth from caving in
So lets break this down in a spiritual context
WATER
it represents the word of God
it is a symbolism for the HS
A body or collection of knowledge
i.e. the mind of christ
Then we have a well
A well represents God
it represents His heart
It represents His word
it represents salvation or eternal life
represents the HS
So here we are looking at Jesus at the well and the woman of Samaria
- And during His travel Jesus is passing through Samaria
He’s tired and so He decides to sit and rest by this well
the Samaritan woman shows up and Jesus basically commands her to give Him a drink
Now there are a couple of things that are happening here that are key
John 4:6 ESV
Jacob’s well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.
John 4:6
First is its the 6th hr.
this reason this is key because it is 12 noon.
A time where travel is not normal
It s too hot
most people are resting
So if you are following me here you are realizing that Jesus is out at an unfamiliar time
So this Samaritan woman shows up during this hour. The reason this is key is because this woman came out to get water at a time where she did not expect anyone to be there.
See women would come out and collect the water needed during the day because it was cooler. (john 4:6)
See women would come out and collect the water needed during the day because it was cooler.
And here we have Jesus telling this young lady to give Him a drink. Now this is really key so grab this.
now i am not saying just grab this and to ignore the rest because you are going to need all this to tie it all together.
See, my plan here is to tie this all together like a neat little package and have you thinking before my message is over
So this lady shows up at a very un-normal time and Jesus says give me some water.
I think what just happened here just went over some peoples heads
Not is he asking for or better yet commanding a drink, but here is he is doing something that doesn’t happen durring this time
See during this time period Jews didn’t communicate with Samaritans
this was forbidden as jews saw themselves as of a higher calibur than the samaritans
so what we are looking at is an indiscretion that can get you killed
John 4:9 ESV
The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)
John 4:9-10
See here Jesus took the initiative to talk to the Samaritan woman, and how important, or what levels Jesus would go to save the lost
See here Jesus took the initiative to talk to the Samaritan woman, and how important, or what levels Jesus would go to save the lost
Luke 19:10 ESV
For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
Luke 4:9–10 ESV
And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written, “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,’
Luke 4:9-10
John 4:9–10 ESV
The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
So lets do a little recap and revisit the definitions briefly
WATER
something necessary for man to live but in this case water represents the word and the HS
See here we see that Jesus is initiating a conversation with this lady so that he can give her what she's been seeking for.
now if you know the story, you know the Samaritan woman and her indiscretions so you know what i’m talking about here
see ill just say that she was an immoral woman looking for attention
you want to know more, go read the story
So lets go a little deeper into this thing called water
water is ever flowing or represents an ever flowing stream = HS
bodies of water are great examples of this
rivers
lakes
oceans
Water is used for many things
cooking
cleaning
just two things
do illustration for cooking
= chicken - most normal people wash it after it comes out of the package
vegetables we wash them
do illustration for bathing
= why - to wash the grime and dirt off
I want you to stay with me though because i’m going somewhere, i promise
and if you follow me you begin to add it all together
See in this scripture Jesus is offering this young lady the living water, the living word of His Father
this water He is offering will change her
cleansing her of her immoral and corrupted lifestyle that she is currently living
So what is a well, how does that fit in?
well im glad you asked, lets see
A well is a pit or cylindrical hole, sunk perpendicularly into the earth to such a depth as to reach a supply of water, and walled with stone to prevent the earth from caving in
really hold onto that definition, its important
In the modern world we have faucets that keep the water flowing
these faucet have control of the speed and pressure of how the water is received
i look at the HS as my faucet and the hardware involved
But see, the water has to be held and contained somewhere, somehow
Some of us have physical wells and some of us have dams or above ground wells that hold and control the water
Now follow me here
Either way the process is pretty much the same on how we get the water
the funny thing is that I bet none of us really questioned on how it even gets to us
we just turn on the faucet and water magically appears
We jump in the shower and water magically rains down from above after we turn the faucet on
But its really not that simple
there are a series of pipes that transports the water from the source
you turn the faucet on and the open air gives instruction to the water to flow
systems in your house tell whether to give you hot or cold running water
So do you get it?
Are you following me here?
See a well is a continuous source for water
And what a well represents in the spirit is
God
His heart
His word
salvation
eternal life
the HS
So lets break it down
John 1:1 ESV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
God is the word, teh word is God
he is the truth
he is the well
The HS is the transport system
John 16:7 ESV
Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
1 cor 2:14
1 Corinthians 2:14 ESV
The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.
You are the one that must turn on the faucet
there must be action taken
you decide if you want this water
you decide the flow
hot or cold
strong or weak
It is your decision
The father gave you a choice
And one thing that the Father wont do is go against his word
He created and holds all truth
he wants to share that truth with you
Thus he created you in His image
making your body a temple
1 Corinthians 6:19–20 ESV
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
1 Corinthians 6:19 ESV
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,
thus making your body a temple, a well to be filled with His truth
See the thing about a well is that you have to physically do something to get the water out
back in the day you had to take your filling bucket and walk outside to the well
then you had to use the smaller bucket attached to s string to draw water out
And just like that, you have to do something
you have to act
you have to move to fill the well that is within you
And you have to decide how fast or how slow
how strong or weak
hot or cold
its up to you
will say it again,
God will not, will not and i will say it a third time cause im trinitarian, will not go against his word
Basically God gave you a choice, and so if and how you fill your well is your choice
See the main well is full and overflowing and He is desiring to pour that over flow into you
2 Corinthians 2:8ceb ESV
So I beg you to reaffirm your love for him.
God has the power to provide you with more than enough of every kind of grace. That way, you will have everything you need always and in everything to provide more than enough for every kind of good work.
God has the power to provide you with more than enough of every kind of grace. That way, you will have everything you need always and in everything to provide more than enough for every kind of good work.
Common English Bible. (2011). (). Nashville, TN: Common English Bible.
A well is built so that earth cannot cave in and corrupt the water source
And so it is with us
when we are in christ we are a new creation
when we are in christ we have the his mind
and with that we stand in the eye of his holy storm which protects us on every side
that is why we are told to put on the full armor of God daily
This all occurs when we spend time in His word
And when we spend time in
when we spend time with him
when we do this we are filling OUR well
So it is that as you realize that you are a spirit in a flesh suit
you realize that you were created to commune daily with the HS
thus your well inside of you craves living water
GOD IS THE WELL
THE HS IS THE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM
John 4:14 ESV
but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
