Memorial Day Prayer..
Intro: Today we’re continuing in our study of the Life and the reign of king David
Recap: Now, last week we are reminded of the very personal very deep love that David has for God…he wanted the His reign and his city to be marked by the glory of God, and that desire carries over into this passage
(Prop) Chapter 7 is a very important passage I think because we’re will get insight into those seasons when God says “No”
The foundation of the christian faith is forgiveness of sin, not protection from disappointment
There will be times when God will say no to you
Wether it be that grand dream to do something spectacular for the kingdom
Or that dream that you had to parent
That desperate prayer for healing
The truth is sometimes God says “No”
This is what we’re gonna talk about today
Outline: This is what we’re gonna see in
Outline:
Outline:
When God says “no” (V.1-7)
When God makes a promise (V.8-17)
David’s response (V.18-29)

When God says “No” (V.1-7)

2 Samuel 7:1–2 ESV
1 Now when the king lived in his house and the Lord had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies, 2 the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent.”
2 Samuel 7:1 ESV
1 Now when the king lived in his house and the Lord had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies,
2 Samuel 7:1–3 ESV
1 Now when the king lived in his house and the Lord had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies, 2 the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent.” 3 And Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you.”
2 sam 7:
Now some schoolers believe that this chapter actually takes place after chapter 8, because this chapter speaks about the peace and rest that David was experiencing yet the next chapter is all about his conquest in warfare, and some believe that this was written after chapter 8 but put first by the author because of it’s importance not because of it’s order chronologically

Notice this is a time of great prosperity for David
He has a house (v.1) - Think about the contrast - David’s been living in caves…and now he’s got a house…and we know that this wasn’t just some simple house…this was a beautiful house…remember we read this a few chapters ago
2 Samuel 5:11 ESV
11 And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, also carpenters and masons who built David a house.
2 Samuel 4:12 ESV
12 And David commanded his young men, and they killed them and cut off their hands and feet and hanged them beside the pool at Hebron. But they took the head of Ish-bosheth and buried it in the tomb of Abner at Hebron.
2 Samuel 4:11 ESV
11 How much more, when wicked men have killed a righteous man in his own house on his bed, shall I not now require his blood at your hand and destroy you from the earth?”

So David has been given big and beautiful house that he didn’t even have to pay for...
He’s in a time of peace (v.1) The Lord had given him rest from all his enemies - David’s life has been filled with War - With the Amelikites, With the Philistines, With Saul…and at this season of his life we see the Lord had given him rest from
I’ve realized that it’s these seasons of hardship are usually the seasons that bring us to the Lord yet look whats on David’s mind...
yet look whats on David’s mind...
2 Samuel 7:2 ESV
2 the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent.”
2 Samuel 7:2 ESV
2 the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent.”
2 Samuel 7:2–3 ESV
2 the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent.” 3 And Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you.”
This is beautiful, because what we see with David is that he looks at his house with it’s cedar which was a sign of luxury and refinement with and then he looks at the tent where the ark of the the covenant was being housed and he thought too himself “It’s not right that I be in this beautiful house and my God be camping”
David in the midst of blessing he looks and his house with it’s cedar which was a sign of luxury and refinement with and then he looks at the tent where the ark of the the covenant was being housed and he thought too himself “It’s not right that I be in this beautiful house and my God be camping”
Heres the picture - David in the midst of blessing he’s filled kingdom priority
David in the midst of blessing he looks and his house with it’s cedar which was a sign of luxury and refinement with and then he looks at the tent where the ark of the the covenant was being housed and he thought too himself “It’s not right that I be in this beautiful house and my God be camping”
Notice His devotion to God wasn’t a situational devotion that only arose in hard times - But rather he was so consumed by the goodness of God, that even in midst of blessing David’s mind and desires are for God’s glory
This is such a beautiful testimony, to the heart of David…
Notice His devotion to God wasn’t a situational devotion that only arose in hard times - But rather he was so consumed by the goodness of God, that even in midst of blessing David’s mind and desires are for God’s glory
This is such a beautiful testimony, to the heart of David…His devotion to God wasn’t a situational devotion, but he was so consumed by the goodness of God, that even in blessing David’s mind and desires are for God’s glory
Notice that David wanted to go beyond what God asked of him - So many times we as want to do the bare minimum for God, but here’s David motivated by thankfulness and adoration wanted to go beyond whats expected for God’s glory
App: David was known as a “Man after God’s own heart”…and you can be like that too…Just live a life that says “What about God…is he the priority?”
Now we’re introduced to someone that would become very important to David... Nathan the prophet…Look how he responds...
2 Samuel 7:3 ESV
3 And Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you.”
Here’s Nathan the prophet, He loves david, he see David’s heart, And so out of his love and respect for him he says “Go and do all that is in your heart for the Lord is with you”
but here’s a little problem, not only is Nathan David’s friend, but he’s also a prophet of God
2 sam 7:4
2 Samuel 7:4 ESV
4 But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan,
Any time see someone say something in the bible and it’s immediately followed by “But the lord said” you know that the person has misspoken
I can’t tell you how many times i
God’s word
Notice how it says “God’s word came later that night” after Nathan had already opened his mouth - In other word’s Nathan had spoken too soon..He spoke to David before God spoke to him
Illustrate - I can’t tell you how many times, I’ve said something and later that God (Usually through my wife says) “why did you say that?”
G. Campbell Morgan said this “It is of the utmost importance that we ever measure our desires even the highest and holiest desires by His will”
We will see in a min that God’s word would be contrary to the word Nathan gave David - Nathan was speaking before the Lord has given him anything to say…He spoke out of emotion, he spoke out of friendship…but he didn't speak what God wanted him to say he...
App: This is good reminder for us for those of us who like to talk a lot…
App: This is good reminder for us
James 1:19 ESV
19 Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger;
God gave you TWO ears and one mouth so that you could listen twice as much as you speak…it’s a lot easier to not say something then to unsay something
Look what God tells Nathen to tell David...
2 Samuel 7:5–7 ESV
5 “Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord: Would you build me a house to dwell in? 6 I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent for my dwelling. 7 In all places where I have moved with all the people of Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?” ’
So God says to Nathan, “Nathen. You told David could build a house for me, but you spoke too soon, Now you have to go and tell him I Said“No”
Here’s the picture: We have this young king, around about 40 years of age with a deeply rooted desire to do something for the Lord and the Lord has just said “No
But there are some things that you need to understand about God’s denial…3 of them
But there are some things that you need to understand about God’s denial…3 of them
God said “No” to a good thing
1 and 2 chronicles sheds light on this event…And These are the word’s of David’s son Solomon who would be the next king, recounting this situation
2 Chronicles 6:8 ESV
8 But the Lord said to David my father, ‘Whereas it was in your heart to build a house for my name, you did well that it was in your heart.
Understand…this wasn’t some wicked thing…this was a good thing
God said “No” to something that David had worked diligently towards
David put a lot of blood sweat tears into building this temple
1 Chronicles 29:1–3 ESV
1 And David the king said to all the assembly, “Solomon my son, whom alone God has chosen, is young and inexperienced, and the work is great, for the palace will not be for man but for the Lord God. 2 So I have provided for the house of my God, so far as I was able, the gold for the things of gold, the silver for the things of silver, and the bronze for the things of bronze, the iron for the things of iron, and wood for the things of wood, besides great quantities of onyx and stones for setting, antimony, colored stones, all sorts of precious stones and marble. 3 Moreover, in addition to all that I have provided for the holy house, I have a treasure of my own of gold and silver, and because of my devotion to the house of my God I give it to the house of my God:
1 chronicles 29:
These are hardest things to hear God say no to…the stuff that you’ve worked so hard towards…
God said “No” and didn’t give a reason at the time
Why did the Lord says “no” - The answer is found in 1 chronicles 22:8-10 by this time he’s an older man who’s seen a little more, and he calls son Solomon to him and recounts this whole endeavor and what the Lord revealed in time to him
Some questions must wait till we have an audience with God, which happens to be the moment they will no longer matter.

1 Chronicles 22:8 ESV
8 But the word of the Lord came to me, saying, ‘You have shed much blood and have waged great wars. You shall not build a house to my name, because you have shed so much blood before me on the earth.
1 Chronicles 22:8–10 ESV
8 But the word of the Lord came to me, saying, ‘You have shed much blood and have waged great wars. You shall not build a house to my name, because you have shed so much blood before me on the earth. 9 Behold, a son shall be born to you who shall be a man of rest. I will give him rest from all his surrounding enemies. For his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quiet to Israel in his days. 10 He shall build a house for my name. He shall be my son, and I will be his father, and I will establish his royal throne in Israel forever.’
The explanation to David recorded in this passage came years after God’s initial denial. We can surmise that for many years David did not know the exact reason why God didn’t want him to build the temple. “It would have wounded David needlessly to have been told this at the time… Meanwhile David possessed his soul in patience, and said to himself, ‘God has a reason; I cannot understand it, but it is well.’” (Meyer)

You sometimes just like here, the answer to the “No” is at another time in another chapter, on another page...
Sometimes just like here the “why” will not be easy to see…because it might come at another time in another chapter, on another page...
Some questions must wait till we have an audience with God, which happens to be the moment they will no longer matter.

What does this passage teach us? - That there will be seasons in Life where God will say No…To your dreams, to your desires…and the bible and reality have told us that quite clearly…we’ll talk a little more about how we should respond to the denials of the Lord but understand this...

God will teach you more by His “No’s” then you could ever learn by His “Yeses”
You learn about yourself
You learn about what your relationship with God is all about
You learn about the cost of true discipleship

When God makes a promise (V.8-17)

2 Samuel 7:8–10 ESV
8 Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people Israel. 9 And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. 10 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly,

When God makes a promise (V.8-17)

So David hears“No” from God about something good…but thank God he’s doesn’t stop speaking…because he’s gonna say “yes” to something great…though he can’t build a house for me…but I will build a house for him...
So David is about to hear “No” from God about something good…but thank God he’s doesn’t stop speaking…because he’s gonna say “yes” to something great…though he can’t build a house for me…but I will build a house for him...

2 Samuel 7:8–9 ESV
8 Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people Israel. 9 And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. Notice, What God does before He lays out his promise before David, Is he reminds David of his faithfulness...
Notice, What God does before He lays out his promise before David, Is he reminds David of his faithfulness...
God took David from the pasture to the throne.
b. I have been with you wherever you have gone: God protected David from all his enemies.
God protected David from all his enemies.
I will made you a great name: And this both has happened and continued to happen
c. Have made you a great name: God made David’s name great in all the earth.
App: One of the best ways to have Faith in the future is to remember what God has done in the past…
Here’s God’s promise...
2 Samuel 7:10–11 ESV
10 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, 11 from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house.
2 sam 7:
So the Lord says “David…you wanna build my house? let’s not do that, tell you what…I’m gonna build your house”…and by house he means Dynasty
Though David was gonna do a good thing for God, God was about to do a greater thing for David - This was a greater promise than David’s offer to God, because David’s dynasty would last longer and be more glorious than the temple David wanted to build
House is used 15 x’s in this chapter alone. (in 3 different ways) Refers to David’s palace(1,2); the Temple(5,7,13); David’s dynasty(11,13,16,18-29).
Notice that what God is rewarding here is not a work as much as it is an intention - Isn’t it interesting that chapter 6 is all about how good intentions aren’t enough, but then this passage show us that good intentions (or right motives) are pleasing to God
Here comes the crux of the promise…this is also known as the Davidic Covenant
2 Samuel 7:12–17 ESV
12 When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, 15 but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. 16 And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’ ” 17 In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David.
2 sam 7:12-
So in Scripture, we learn a lot about God and his plan though covenants or Oaths he makes to certain people in History...Through his covenant to Noah We see his grace towards sinners...through his covenant to Abraham, We see God’s plan of a great world changing nation that came out of one family Through his covenant to Moses, the nation settled in their Promised Land, which set the stage of history for the establishing of a kingship to rule over the kingdom of Israel…and now through his covenant we see God tell David that his house would stand forever...
To your prayers
Now there was both a near fulfillment and far fulfillment of this promise…
2 Samuel 7:12 ESV
12 When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.
Solomon: Solomon ruled on David’s throne.
2 Sam 7:
Through his covenant to Noah sinners continued to live and increase on the earth…through his covenant to Abraham, his descendants became a nation. Through his covenant to Moses, the nation settled in their Promised Land, which set the stage of history for the establishing of a kingship to rule over the kingdom of Israel…and now through his covenant to we see God tell David that his house would stand forever...

Jeremiah 23:5–6 ESV
5 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 6 In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’
Jer 23:

Isaiah 9:6–7 ESV
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

Luke 1:31–33 ESV
31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

David’s Response (V.18-29)

God’s servants must learn to accept the disappointments of life.
It’s Never to hear God say no…but here’s the truth…you have, and you will…and he might no tell you why
So instead of fixating on the “Why” Fixate on the “Who”…as in remember “Who” Jesus is:
He loves you
He’s faithful
He’s working out all things our eternal Good
He’s subjected himself to his own medicine
Dorothy Sayers, a novelist, said this years ago: The incarnation means that for whatever reason God chose to let us fall . . . to suffer, to be subject to sorrows and death—he has nonetheless had the honesty and the courage to take his own medicine.
He can exact nothing from man that he has not exacted from himself. He himself has gone through the whole of human experience— from the trivial irritations of family life and the cramping restrictions of hard work and lack of money to the worst horrors of pain and humiliation, defeat, despair, and death. . . . He was born in poverty and . . . suffered infinite pain all for us...and thought it well worth his while

all for us...and thought it well worth his while
When God says no, it means He has a better way, & He expects me to support it
God said no to the good and said yes to the great…and he still does that
Understand David wouldn’t get to enjoy the benefits of what God’s promise but others would - Think about his son…think about the that fact that here in almost 2020 in Pomona CA, we’re still talking something that God did in this man’s life thousands of years ago
App: We can’t decide God’s response to our desires, but we can decide our response to his…and that decision can have an impact of our families and the people around us
Great Poem: (anonymous)One by one God took them from me All the things I valued most; Until I was empty-handed, Every glittering toy was lost. And I walked earth's highways, Grieving, in my rags and poverty. Until I heard His voice inviting, "Lift those empty hands to Me!"Then I turned my hands to heaven, And He filled them with His riches, Until they could contain no more. And at last I comprehended With my stupid mind, and dull heart, That God cannot pour His riches Into hands already full.

2 Samuel 7:18–21 ESV
18 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord and said, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far? 19 And yet this was a small thing in your eyes, O Lord God. You have spoken also of your servant’s house for a great while to come, and this is instruction for mankind, O Lord God! 20 And what more can David say to you? For you know your servant, O Lord God! 21 Because of your promise, and according to your own heart, you have brought about all this greatness, to make your servant know it.

()Lessons #1 - God’s servants must learn to accept the disappointments of life.A.T.Pierson used to say, “Disappointments are His appointments.”Lessons #2 - When God says no, it means He has a better way, & He expects me to support it!Lessons #3 - My very best reaction is cooperation & humility! He doesn’t call everybody to build temples! But He does call everyone to be faithful &obedient. Some of you live with broken dreams. Sometime in the past you had high hopes that your life would go in a certain direction; but for some mysterious reason God said, No!And you moved along, & now years have gone by, & others younger have taken your place. The way David responded to this great Word from God is a good example for us to follow today
The way David responded to this great Word from God is a good example for us to follow today
The way David responded to this great Word from God is a good example for us to follow today
He sat before the Lord(18) - did not try to change Gods mind!
And he humbled himself - 10 x’s In this Chapter David is called a servant of God); & then refers himself as simply David(20) not the King! It shows that David humbly accepted God’s “no” when he wanted to build the temple.
With Prayer - This is what he’s doing…He’s praying
It shows that David humbly accepted God’s “no” when he wanted to build the temple. “There are some professors who would do a great thing if they might, but if they are not permitted to act a shining part they are in the sulks and angry with their God. David when his proposal was set aside found it in his heart not to murmur, but to pray.”
“There are some Christians who would do a great thing if they might, but if they are not permitted to act a shining part they are in the sulks and angry with their God. David when his proposal was set aside found it in his heart not to murmur, but to pray.”
App: When God says no…this is how we should handle it…wait on him, humble ourselves before him, pour out our hearts to him
Look at what else He does...

2 Samuel 7:22–24 ESV
22 Therefore you are great, O Lord God. For there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 23 And who is like your people Israel, the one nation on earth whom God went to redeem to be his people, making himself a name and doing for them great and awesome things by driving out before your people, whom you redeemed for yourself from Egypt, a nation and its gods? 24 And you established for yourself your people Israel to be your people forever. And you, O Lord, became their God.
David begins to worship God…
He worship God for his “HolIness” - There’s none like you…there’s no God beside you
Note we’ve had a number of “forevers”.A forever throne(13); A forever kingdom(16); A forever nation(24); A forever promise(25); A forever blessing(29).
He worships him for his deliverance - How God delivered his people from the hand of Pharoh
He highlight the eternality of God - Note we’ve had a number of “forevers”.A forever throne(13); A forever kingdom(16); A forever nation(24); A forever promise(25); A forever blessing(29).
App: I’m learning worshiping as a mighty weapon against enemy and his darts...
2 Samuel 7:25–29 ESV
25 And now, O Lord God, confirm forever the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house, and do as you have spoken. 26 And your name will be magnified forever, saying, ‘The Lord of hosts is God over Israel,’ and the house of your servant David will be established before you. 27 For you, O Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, have made this revelation to your servant, saying, ‘I will build you a house.’ Therefore your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you. 28 And now, O Lord God, you are God, and your words are true, and you have promised this good thing to your servant. 29 Now therefore may it please you to bless the house of your servant, so that it may continue forever before you. For you, O Lord God, have spoken, and with your blessing shall the house of your servant be blessed forever.”

The thrust of vs.27 is thy Kingdom come...
The thrust of vs.28 is thy will be done...
Think about: There is a church today because God used David’s family to bring thew Savior into the world. There is a future for Israel today because God gave David a throne forever!
Conclusion:
So what do we learn here? 3 quick things...
God’s servants must learn to accept the disappointments of life.
It’s Never to hear God say no…but here’s the truth…you have, and you will…and he might no tell you why
So instead of fixating on the “Why” Fixate on the “Who”…as in remember “Who” Jesus is:
He’s sovereign and all knowing
He’s faithful and loving
He’s working out all things our eternal Good
He’s subjected himself to his own medicine
Dorothy Sayers, a novelist, said this years ago: The incarnation means that for whatever reason God chose to let us fall . . . to suffer, to be subject to sorrows and death—he has nonetheless had the honesty and the courage to take his own medicine.
He can exact nothing from man that he has not exacted from himself. He himself has gone through the whole of human experience— from the trivial irritations of family life and the cramping restrictions of hard work and lack of money to the worst horrors of pain and humiliation, defeat, despair, and death. . . . He was born in poverty and . . . suffered infinite pain all for us...and thought it well worth his while
When God says no, it means He has a better way, & He expects me to support it.
App: We can’t decide God’s response to our desires, but we can decide our response to his…and that decision can have an impact of our families and the people around us
Our Response should be humility.
I think of the words of the great french King Louie the 14th when he lost his battle to England “How could God do this to me after everything I’ve done for him”
Here’s one of the most important things that we will ever learn as Christians…God doesn’t owe us anything but wrath....but he gave us everything in Jesus
