Made Lower Than The Angels

Man was initially given dominion over the earth
Genesis 1:27–29 NKJV
So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” And God said, “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food.
Man forfeited this at the fall and became enslaved to fear, especially fear of death
Man’s first response toward God after the fall was fear
Genesis 3:8–10 NKJV
And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?” So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.”
The Second Adam succeeded where the first Adam failed
1 Corinthians 15:22–27 NKJV
For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming. Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. The last enemy that will be destroyed is death. For “He has put all things under His feet.” But when He says “all things are put under Him,it is evident that He who put all things under Him is excepted.
We live in a period of now, but not yet anticipation
Hebrews 2:8–9 NKJV
You have put all things in subjection under his feet.” For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now we do not yet see all things put under him. But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.

Made Perfect Through Suffering

Jesus is the captain of our salvation
Greek word translated “captain” is ἀρχηγός
It can also be translated originator or founder.
Jesus was made perfect through suffering
How could Jesus, who is God Himself, be “made perfect”?
Consider the Menorah in the tabernacle (and later the temple)
It was hammered from a single piece of gold
As a block of gold, it was completely perfect, but not perfectly suited for its ultimate purpose
Because Jesus has sanctified us (i.e. made us holy) He is not ashamed to call us His brothers and sisters.
Hebrews 2:11–13 NKJV
For both He who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of one, for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren, saying: “I will declare Your name to My brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will sing praise to You.” And again: “I will put My trust in Him.” And again: “Here am I and the children whom God has given Me.”

Made a Perfect and Merciful High Priest

A priest functions as a mediator
A mediator must be a member of the group he mediates for
A mediator must be selected by the authority he mediates to
Jesus shared our humanity without sharing our sin (or our sin nature)
2 Corinthians 5:21 NKJV
For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
His faithfulness resulted in the fulfillment of Genesis 3:15
Genesis 3:15 NKJV
And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.”
The destruction of Satan and death itself
This resulted in deliverance from the fear of death
1 Corinthians 15:54–57 NKJV
So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
He made atonement for our sins
He was tempted, so He is able to help us when we are tempted.
