Sermon Tone Analysis

Intro

So last week we saw some interesting words in the Greek that we can see in our modern English language.

The word for light in Greek is phos.

As in phosphorus.

The word for blood in Greek is haima .

As in hemophiliac.

We learned that if we say we have fellowship with Him but continually walk in darkness, we are deceived.

Now John picks it up from the other side of self deception in verse 8.

8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

This verse seems so obvious.

Once we know Jesus and see ourselves in His light but still there are those who believe that sinless perfection in this life is possible.

Is it possible?

If we say that we have no sin, is literally if we say that we continually do not sin, not that we had a good day.

John say we are continually deceiving ourselves.

Jesus warned us over and over again to “be not deceived”.

Hand out.

and the truth is not in us.

Literally, the truth (Who is the Truth?) is continually not in us.

The sincerity of ones belief does not make it correct.

In fact one may be sincerely wrong.

He continues:

9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

This is or should be very familiar to all of us.

If we confess our sins, confess is homologeō in Greek.

A combination word, homo is same and logeo is word.

So to say the same thing regarding our Sin.

That our job.

Now Jesus takes over.

He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us, The Greek is in what is called an aorist subjunctive meaning “if we- then he” immediately ( aorist is a punticular action) forgives us and cleanses us from all unrighteousness.

10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.

Verse 10 is a mirror of verse 8.

If we say that we have not sinned, have not sinned is in a Perfect tense.

Its saying I have not nor never been a sinner.

The result, we make Him a liar, that is we continuously call Him a liar.

It is saying your sacrifice on the cross “means nothing to me”.

I don’t need forgiveness.

The result, His word is not in us.

Jesus would say I never new you.
