I) He is Correctable ()()

You must honestly and humbly address your own mistakes and sins to be used by God to lead

A) Humility (Gen 17:3)

For 13 years God does not talk/fellowship with Abram
(Vs 3) he fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying
he has not grown bitter, he has not grown hard, angry, disgruntled
bowing show submission, and ownership

B) Honesty

You must honestly and humbly address your own mistakes and sins to be used by God to lead
First take care of yourself so you can take care of others (Navy Senior Chief E8 of 26 years)
He does heed God’s rebuke and does not go back to Hagar
No more children with Hagar
Lot did not desire to flee to the mountains but wanted to go to Zoar (In principle he is just moving on to the next opportunity to continue his pet sin) ()
Viewed his rebellion as a “little one”
Sodom was not the problem Lot was the problem
Getting caught is not the problem
Getting fired is not the problem
Did not see the big deal, did not deal with his mistakes and sins that brought him to where he was fleeing for his life with his family forever affected.
Even after his wife’s death he still never went back to Abraham or go back to God, but rather would live in a cave; drunken stupors to numb the pain and forget life sorrows, led to incest and continuing to destroy his family.
He never had that moment () where he allowed God to correct him

C) Homage (Gen 17:5)

He allows God to redefine him and change him
We must rethink our goals for our family
Abram was no longer Abraham
By it he was acknowledging the holy oath and calling God was placing on his life

II) He is Commanding ()()

He fears God more than he fears those he leads
He fears God more than he fears repercussions, backlash and rebellion

A) Scripturally (Gen 17:9)

It was based on the command of God; not on opinion, taste or his own selfish desire

B) Selflessly (Gen 17:14)

It was for his household’s good ()
He would gladly bear reproach as he knew it would benefit and help his family
He does not ask anyone to do something he is not willing to do himself (Gen 17:24)
Made hard decisions to obey even when it went against his own desire or plan ()
Looked like he was leading his son to a cliff, that there would be no water, food, shelter and his son would die.
Yet obeyed God anyway

C) Spiritually ()

Philippians 3:3 KJV 1900
For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.
Notice LOT is not mentioned (most likely in Sodom)
Lot was not interested in the commands of the Lord, much less implementing controversial, and hard commands such as circumcision
He would rather surround himself with fleshly activity than cut himself away from it ()
Lot did not command his household until it was too late ()
In today’s application he was taking a biblical stand against confidence in the flesh
Looked like he was leading his son to a cliff, that there would be no water, food, shelter and his son would die.

D) Sustainment (Gen 17:12)

Yet obeyed God anyway
He starts his children young in the instruction of the Lord
Proverbs 22:6 KJV 1900
Train up a child in the way he should go: And when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Matthew 18:3 KJV 1900
And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

III) He is Compassionate ()

He loves Lot; he views him as a just and righteous man ()
50-45-40-30-20-10 (6x he petitions God for Lot and his family)
God was moved by Abraham’s petition because he understood his motive
God did not hide it from Abraham; because He knew Abraham loved Lot
He knew Abraham would hurt to know Lot was killed in Sodom’s destruction
He loved Esau
He loved Isaac
Have a happy home
Proverbs 15:13–15 KJV 1900
A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: But by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken. The heart of him that hath understanding seeketh knowledge: But the mouth of fools feedeth on foolishness. All the days of the afflicted are evil: But he that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.
Cover them constantly with prayer
