12 – 7:21-29 – The Way of a True Disciple
Identifying the way of a True Disciple of Jesus and learning the way that builds a life on that solid foundation.

(NLT)

Matthew 7:21–29 NLT
“Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’ “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.” When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, for he taught with real authority—quite unlike their teachers of religious law.

1 – True Disciples of Jesus

Matthew 7:21–23 NLT
“Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’

True Disciples
21 “Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. 22 On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ 23 But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’
Not everyone who appears to be religious is really entering the Kingdom - only those who actually follow God’s desires
Only those who actually follow God’s desires
There are many ways to look and act religious
What truly matters is knowing God intimately in a trust bond build on obedience (faith)

2 – Building on a Solid Foundation

Matthew 7:24–27 NLT
“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”
People who listen to Jesus and follow are truly wise — like someone who builds on a reliable and solid foundation.
Building on a Solid Foundation
24 “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. 25 Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. 26 But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. 27 When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”
Hard times in this life will test and trouble ALL of us… but those who risk the investment of listening and following Jesus’ words will thrive despite them.
Content Here.
If we simply attend church or places where we hear Jesus, but never risk following in faith, our lives never become strong.

3 – Surrendering to Love

Matthew 7:28–29 NLT
When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, for he taught with real authority—quite unlike their teachers of religious law.
(NLT)
28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 for he taught with real authority—quite unlike their teachers of religious law.
Jesus’ core message was that the Kingdom of God had come. This meant God is in charge.

Conclusion

Jesus then spoke with the authority of God himself. He was not meant to be interesting or provocative first… he was intending to tell you reality. The culture around us is more likely to live in and promote fantasy.
Jesus knew we would end up giving our lives to something — even it was ourselves.
Only Jesus showed us the way to the center of God’s love, and only a totally loving God can be trusted with total surrender and obedience.

Surrender is not…

Surrendering is not repressing your personality.

Repressing your personality

Surrender is…

Questions to Consider and Apply:

Who do I trust for guidance with my decisions? Is it myself? Popular cultural thought? The God that Jesus revealed?
Have I made a commitment to trust God with my life? Do I trust God’s goodness enough to let Him lead me? Is He King or a just a consultant?
Have I made a commitment to trust God with my life? Do I trust God’s goodness enough to let Him lead me? Is He King or a just a consultant?
How do I trust God with my decisions? What steps do I take to let God lead me?

What might be something I can tangibly open up to God and ask what He thinks ready to act as I sense He leads?
