Introduction

- Leaven in bread is false doctrine or some other kind of evil: , ; ;
- So the basic illustration is that of a woman spreading false doctrine or similar evil in the kingdom of Heaven until it is spread throughout and infects the whole thing.
-Let’s dig a little further:
- , , , ; ;- This is the leaven of the Pharisees, which matches the church on 7 hills.
- But there are also 3 types of leaven that Christ warned about, and it's interesting that there are three measures of meal here that get leavened:
1. The leaven of the Pharisees: - hypocrisy- it's being overly harsh and legalistic in a way that no one, not even themselves, can attain to.
2. The leaven of the Sadducees - liberalism - unbelief and tampering with God's words.
3. The leaven of Herod - lasciviousness and worldliness
- Notice these three, again, match the three points of temptation. Which match the original attack on the word of God: 1. Adding words, 2. omitting words, and 3. changing words.
- Notice also that Paul mentions three types of leaven in the church, two types in : lasciviousness (Herod) and false doctrine (liberalism, Sadducees), then the other one in : legalism (Pharisaism or hypocrisy)
- As an additional interesting note, notice how there are three main bodies of professing Christians that have developed over the years: The Orthodox Catholic/Greek (Pharisees), the Mainstream Protestants (Sadduccees) and the Others, including evangelicals, non-denominational, etc. (Herod/lascivious/using religion for political interest).
