Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
Synoptic Gospels
Synoptic Gospels
And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.
Curtain of temple torn in two
Earth shook, rocks split, tombs broke open. Holy people raised to life and appeared to many.
Centurion: “Surely he was the Son of God!”
Women were there watching from a distance
With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.

Mark 15:37
Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.
Centurion: “Surely this was a righteous man.”

In John we don’t have these things occuring after, we have the mention that the next day is a special Sabbath and the Jews didn’t want the bodies on the crosses, so they asked Pilate to have the legs broken (to speed death).
“It is finished”
: Knowing that everything had now been “finished” (same word) Jesus said he was thirsty (another one of his last sayings). Cf.
It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
John said Jesus knew what he was doing and what was going on. You get the sense that even in the midst of all the agony and fear, he is willfully participating in God’s plan and nothing is happening--even these small details--haphazardly and events are not taking him by surprise.
*What about in our lives?
“It is finished” not only speaks to the end, but carries with it the sense that one’s religious obligation has been fulfilled. A task has been carried out.
Two Examples:
It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
“Loved them to the end.” *Do you remember how Jesus “loved his own to the end”? He took off his tunic, put a towel around his waist and bent down and washed their feet. “End” is same word in Grk. He loved them by finishing his religious duty to them. you know how we say “if you remember anything from what I tell you . . .” There’s sort of a final lesson here that perhaps summarizes Jesus ministry and what he wants to underscore with his followers. It’s all about service. I’m the master and I’ve done this, now you must do it.
I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.
John 17:4
This is said in Jesus prayer for his followers and for those who come after. It also has a ring of “finality” to it. It feels like a wrap up of his ministry and is a prayer of protection and blessing. *What happened after the prayer? He and his disciples went into the garden of Gethsemane.
When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.
“finishing” (the work) is same word Jesus utters on the cross.
“finishing” (the work) is same word Jesus utters on the cross.
So “finish” is more than this is now over and it’s done and I’m dying. It means “It is accomplished!”
*What works / religious obligations do we still have left to “finish / accomplish.” Meaning what tasks are left before us to carry out?
*What keeps us from seeing them through? (sort of the same question) *How did Jesus remain so resolute?
Well John doesn’t say what was accomplished.
*What was accomplished? (our salvation) But can we make it not about us for just a second?
I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people,

Jesus now reigns at God’s right hand.
Jesus rule and authority is far exceeding everything else (rule, authority, power dominion—get the point?). In life he was challenged and subject to all of life’s physical laws, emotional highs and lows, temptations, death. No more! Everything is under his feet.
Higher than any name you can think of right now or way in the future.
Overflow to the many
15: Overflow to the many
16: The gift followed many trespasses and brought justification
17: Through one man death reigned, those that receive God’s abundant provision reign in life
19: many made righteous
*Why am I pointing this out?
Jesus died for that person next to you. Rejoice for them too that your brother sister, friend can also share in what Jesus has accomplished.
1 Cor. 15:26
The last enemy to be destroyed is death.
The Pillar New Testament Commentary: The Gospel according to John 7. Jesus Crucified (19:16b–30)
He hell in hell laid low;
Made sin, he sin o’erthrew;
Bowed to the grave, destroyed it so,
And death, by dying, slew.
