When sharing the gospel, some receive it, others will reject it.
Intro: There is only one gospel.
Elab.
But there many ways that we can present the gospel message.
We are all called to do so.
But there is problem, people who are not saved don’t like being told that they need to be.
People like to think that they are okay.
They like do believe as long as they do good things, they will go to heaven.
Talking to people about Jesus, and their need to be saved is not an easy thing to do.
But this is what Jesus has called us to do.
In our passage for today we’re going to see that Jesus sent out his disciples on a very personal short-term preaching mission.
We’re going to learn that when we go with the gospel, some will receive it and others will reject it.
Before we dive in, it’s important to note that this passage contains some unique and specific instructions for the twelve disciples as they were sent out on a one-time mission.
This short-term mission trip was designed to teach and train as part of their intense training.
They had heard a lot of preaching from Jesus and now it was time for them to put it into practice.
We are told to go, but maybe not just as they were instructed.
We see this also recorded in Matthew.
But He get a little detailed in the instructions.
Remember Mark moves along fast.
:
Their mission was limited and localized.
There would be a time for them to go to the gentiles, but not at this time.
Matthew
Today we are to reach the world, but it may not be time for us to go on a foreign mission trip as a church.
Doesn’t mean that someone can’t go (with a group or a church) if they felt led.
Or we could do something to help some who does foreign missions.
I. Team Work.
VS 7
1.Teamwork.
Look at verse 7: “And He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two…” (6 teams)
The word for “called” has the idea of summoning.
NASB Summoned the twelve.
They were used to being with Jesus and Jesus doing all the preaching, now it was their turn.
The use of “began” gives the sense that Jesus individually commissioned each pair.
“send” is the Greek apostello, or apostle and means, “to be thrust out.”
a. Remember that this was Jesus’ plan all along.
He recruited the twelve to spend time with Him according to 3:14 and to send them out: “that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach.”
This is a great reminder for us – we gather in order to go!
And he sent them out “two by two.”
Jesus used teams of two on at least two other occasions
In two disciples were sent to get a colt for Christ and in team of two were told to get a room ready for the Passover meal.
Later, Jesus sends out 70 in teams of two ().
John the Baptist sent out two in and Paul and Barnabas served as teammates in the Book of Acts.
Moses and Aaron are good examples of teamwork in the Old Testament and New Testament.
says: “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil.
For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow.”
Here are some benefits of teamwork in ministry:
• Greater safety
• Encouragement
• Accountability
• Blending of gifts and abilities to offset the weakness of the other
• While one is sharing the gospel, the other can be praying
• They can tag team in a conversation
• It’s a great environment for mutual mentor-ship
