Deuteronomy 5:1–21 CSB
1 Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “Israel, listen to the statutes and ordinances I am proclaiming as you hear them today. Learn and follow them carefully. 2 The Lord our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. 3 He did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with all of us who are alive here today. 4 The Lord spoke to you face to face from the fire on the mountain. 5 At that time I was standing between the Lord and you to report the word of the Lord to you, because you were afraid of the fire and did not go up the mountain. And he said: 6 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery. 7 Do not have other gods besides me. 8 Do not make an idol for yourself in the shape of anything in the heavens above or on the earth below or in the waters under the earth. 9 Do not bow in worship to them, and do not serve them, because I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the fathers’ iniquity to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, 10 but showing faithful love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commands. 11 Do not misuse the name of the Lord your God, because the Lord will not leave anyone unpunished who misuses his name. 12 Be careful to remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy as the Lord your God has commanded you. 13 You are to labor six days and do all your work, 14 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. Do not do any work—you, your son or daughter, your male or female slave, your ox or donkey, any of your livestock, or the resident alien who lives within your city gates, so that your male and female slaves may rest as you do. 15 Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out of there with a strong hand and an outstretched arm. That is why the Lord your God has commanded you to keep the Sabbath day. 16 Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and so that you may prosper in the land the Lord your God is giving you. 17 Do not murder. 18 Do not commit adultery. 19 Do not steal. 20 Do not give dishonest testimony against your neighbor. 21 Do not covet your neighbor’s wife or desire your neighbor’s house, his field, his male or female slave, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

I. The Ten Commandments guide all christian obedience.

Deuteronomy 5:6–14 CSB
6 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery. Deuteronomy 5:1 CSB
1 Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “Israel, listen to the statutes and ordinances I am proclaiming as you hear them today. Learn and follow them carefully.

A. The Ten Commandments teach us how to relate to God.

Deuteronomy 5:6–14 CSB
6 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery.
Illus: When God gave the ten comandments it was not meant to be an exhaustive list of comands, but instead paint a picture of what a fully devoted follower of God’s should pursue.
The first four were intended to teach you how to relate to God.
1. No other God’s before me- i.e. That you do not allow anything to have the place of worship in your life except God. It really asks the question of who you live for. In our day and time, the question we must ask is if we love ourselves (and worship our selves) or do we worship God. Who is your life really lived for.
2. No Idols- This means we don’t let physical things take the place of God in our lives… cars, jobs, guns, clothes, bank accounts… you get the point.
3. Don’t us the Lord’s name in vein. When I say this the natural thought is to think of the person who uses the D word after God’s name… but it is more. Whenever you say OMG… or Oh My… you are using the Lord’s name in vein. Also any time you use God’s name flippantly you are using God’s name in vein.
4. Keep God’s day. I know this one isn’t popular. Anytime there is a conflict on the calendar God’s day loses. Whether Ball, dance, or even a pretty day on the lake, God’s day is of secondary importance to us.
4. Don’t
All of this together points us to a bigger picture. God demands whole hearted devotion. No other Gods, no idols, keep God’s name sacred, keep God’s day sacred.
Mark 12:28–30 CSB
28 One of the scribes approached. When he heard them debating and saw that Jesus answered them well, he asked him, “Which command is the most important of all?” 29 Jesus answered, “The most important is Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.

B. The Ten Commandments teach us hot to relate to our fellow man.

Deuteronomy 5:16–21 CSB
16 Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and so that you may prosper in the land the Lord your God is giving you. 17 Do not murder. 18 Do not commit adultery. 19 Do not steal. 20 Do not give dishonest testimony against your neighbor. 21 Do not covet your neighbor’s wife or desire your neighbor’s house, his field, his male or female slave, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.
Illus: If we genuinely love God it will transform the way we treat our fellow man.
Do you live in such a way that you seek to love other men around us.
Do you view men through anger— seeking their harm?
Do you look at the oposite sex with lust? How many TV shows have you watched where you have willingly brought nudity into your home through in the last month?
Do you do business in such a way that you know is unfair and steals from others?
How often do you bend or omit the truth to further yourself?
Don’t we live coveting what we do not have showing that we do not find genuine contentment with God.
If we are honest, few of us love our neighbor because we are too busy loving ourselves.
Mark 12:29–31 CSB
29 Jesus answered, “The most important is Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. 31 The second is, Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other command greater than these.”

II. The Ten Commandments are the tip of the iceberg.

Deuteronomy 5:6–10 CSB
6 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery.

A. The Ten Commandments should be understood through God’s intent.

Illus: When Jesus spoke the sermon on the mount he gave a picture into GOd’s intent when he gave the law.
God is just as concerned with your heart as he is with your actions.
That is why the hatred in your heart matters just as much to God as the murder in your hands.
The lust with your eyes matters just as much to God as the adultery with your body.
Do you seek to love God and your neighbor, or so you see God’s law as a chore.
When you are transformed by God your heart should change as well as your actions.
Instead of seeing God’s law as a have to… it becomes the abundant life given to you by God.
Matthew 5:21–22 CSB
21 “You have heard that it was said to our ancestors, Do not murder, and whoever murders will be subject to judgment. 22 But I tell you, everyone who is angry with his brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Whoever insults his brother or sister, will be subject to the court. Whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be subject to hellfire.
Matthew 5:27–30 CSB
27 “You have heard that it was said, Do not commit adultery. 28 But I tell you, everyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of the parts of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of the parts of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.

B. Jesus both fulfills the commands as well as calls us to follow.

Illus: God understands that we are incapable of fulfilling the law.
That said, God did not lower the standard, but instead created a way for us to embrace his standard.
When Jesus came, he fulfilled the whole law for us. He died on the cross to forgive us for every time we did not measure up. He rose from the dead to give us new life.
Then God placed His Holy Spirit in us so that by God’s power we might live for Him.
Matthew 5:17–19 CSB
17 “Don’t think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or one stroke of a letter will pass away from the law until all things are accomplished. 19 Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commands and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever does and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

III. The Ten Commandments still matter today.

Deuteronomy 5:6–21 CSB
6 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery.
Deuteronomy 5:1 CSB
1 Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “Israel, listen to the statutes and ordinances I am proclaiming as you hear them today. Learn and follow them carefully.

A. You exist to magnify God through living out God’s commands.

Illus: Who do you really live for.
Is faith, church, and the christian life just a piece of your fulfillment and self worship?
Do you genuinely seek to love God with all of you, and love your neighbor as your self?
Do you see God’s commands a burdensome, or are they the abundant life God has given you?
2 Corinthians 3:3 CSB
3 You show that you are Christ’s letter, delivered by us, not written with ink but with the Spirit of the living God—not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.
