Introduction

Requirements for Prayer
Pure heart
Psalm 66:18 KJV 1900
18 If I regard iniquity in my heart, The Lord will not hear me:
Psalm 66:18 KJV 1900
18 If I regard iniquity in my heart, The Lord will not hear me:
2. Belief in Christ
John 14:13 KJV 1900
13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
3. According to God’s Will
1 John 5:14 KJV 1900
14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
Matthew 6:5–14 KJV 1900
5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. 7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. 8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. 9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. 14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
Matt 6:
The Word Pray
88-old testement
3
93-New testement
Prayer is vital to The Christian life, we have the ability to talk directly to God without need of a High priest.
This was something many Old testament saints would have given anything for and we must take advantage of it!
I. Principals of Prayer (5-8)
A. Pray sincerely
Matthew 6:5 KJV 1900
5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
Hypocrite
has many meanings from a play actor to a profane Godless person
it is used 31 times in the Bible
The Synagogues were gathering places of worship for the Jews
Those who stood there would assure themselves that many people would see them
Praying on the street corners would also ensure that many people would see them, but Jesus taught that God has no regard for such action
an example of this is dounr in
Luke 18:11 KJV 1900
11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.
Tax collectors
During the time of Jesus in first century Israel, there were publicans and tax collectors who could walk up to a man and tax him for what he was carrying, and much more.
These tax collectors were hated and despised because they were usually fellow Jews who worked for Rome.
There were many taxes needed from the provinces to administrate the Roman Empire. These taxes paid for a good system of roads, law and order, security, religious freedom, a certain amount of self government and other benefits.
They would often charge in exsess of what was owed so they were very wealthy.
Zachous and Mathew were both Tax collectors before following Christ.
Christ tells us at the end of verse 5 that those who look for earthy reward “have there reward”
• In heaven we will be rewarded for what we Did for God on earth
• If we are rewarded on earth it was not for God and thus we will not be rewarded
• Note: This is not to say that we will not be rewarded for things we are rewarded for on earth, it comes down to motive
B. Pray Secretly
Matthew 6:6 KJV 1900
6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
THis is not to say that we schould not pray in Public or corprately
Public Prayer
a. In the old testament
b. In the New Testament
From the brginning of the church prayer was made public
Acts 2:42 KJV 1900
42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
Acts 4:24 KJV 1900
24 And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is:
Acts 12:14 ESV
14 Recognizing Peter’s voice, in her joy she did not open the gate but ran in and reported that Peter was standing at the gate.
Acts 12:12 KJV 1900
12 And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.
This is not what Christ is condemning, he is condemning personal prayer in Public for sake of gathering attention
A private room was a room that did not have doors or windows to the exterior, thus closing the door granted total privacy.
Again this is not to say you cannot pray in Public, only that it must not be done for attention
Since the Believer’s prayer is to God and not a human audience total privacy is Ideal
Since God is ever present the believer can be in his presence in the most private of locations.
C. Pray Spontaneously
Matthew 6:7–8 KJV 1900
7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. 8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
a. Here christ is condemning ritualism or lengthy prayers.
Lengthy prayers are not wrong since Christ spent whole night’s in prayer and repeated prayers were offered by Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane
What he is speaking against is babbling, he calls it mush speaking from the meaning many words
A present day example of this is Rosary Beads
True prayer to God can last as long as one wishes. The motive as well as the manner must be spiritual and spontaneous not ceremonial and repetitious for the sake of piling up words.
Matthew 6:8 KJV 1900
8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
This is not meant to deter asking. It is meant as an assurance that God knows our needs without using pagan methods to get his attention.
A Clasic illistration of this Pgan approach Christ is warning against is found in
1 Kings 18:26–29 KJV 1900
26 And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made. 27 And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked. 28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them. 29 And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.
1 Kings
Isn’t it wonderful that this is not the case with our heavenly father
He is never
· meditatiing
· Busy
· On a journy
· Sleeping
Psalm 121:3–4 KJV 1900
3 He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: He that keepeth thee will not slumber. 4 Behold, he that keepeth Israel Shall neither slumber nor sleep.
He knows our needs and we can turn to him
1 Peter 5:7 KJV 1900
7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
We know the principals of Prayer
Pray Sincerely
Pray Secretly
Pray Spontaneously
II. Specific Pattern of Prayer (9-15)
Matthew 6:9–15 KJV 1900
9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. 14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
This is not neither will this ever be the Lords prayer
The reason for this is that the Lord never sinned therfore he never needed to ask forgivness
This Prayer is a guide on how the christian should pray, however it must be noted although many areas are included in this prayer it is not Christ’s complete instruction on prayer
The question stands should we repeat this prayer today?
The obvious answer is no because that would be ritualisim which we just talked about.
However, the principals in this prayer of
adoration
petition
confession
supplication
benidiction
all can and should be used regularly
A. Adoration: Worship to God
Matthew 6:9–10 KJV 1900
9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Matt
By Jesues’s Statement After this manner He is stating that this is a model of prayer we should pray
He Begins with subjection to God we are to acknolodge our subjetion to him and to His will
We are praying to our father who is in heaven and we must reconize this fact
We are not praying to some dead God but one who is alive and cares for us
After reconizing He is in Heven we are to reconize He is holy
God is, always has been and always will be Holy
We must reconize the seperation between God and all elce
We must note the Phrase thy Kingdom come thy will be done
We must note that this is during the sermon on the mount when Christ is offering the kindom
in todays context however one day God will reign and his will we be totally and completly accomplished everywhere
B. Pettition to supply needs
Matthew 6:11 KJV 1900
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
Daily bread was the amount of bread necessary for survival for that day. Jesus wanted His decimals to live in a state of constant dependence on God and his provision.
C. Confession of Sin
Matthew 6:12 KJV 1900
12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
Three aspects of forgivness
Judicial forgivness
includes all our sin
Colossians 2:13 KJV 1900
13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
This is through
Matthew 1:7 KJV 1900
7 And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa;
Ephesians 1:7 KJV 1900
7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
Colossians 1:14 ESV
14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
2. Praying for forgivness
1 John 1:9 ESV
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
3. We need to have a forgiving attitude
Ephesians 4:32 KJV 1900
32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.
D. Supplication: Guidance
Matthew 6:13 KJV 1900
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Questions
Would God ever lead anyone into temptation
What does the Word temptation mean
Is this deliverance from Evil or from the evil one
Would God ever lead anyone into temptation?
The words “Lead us not” is an imperative which can be constructed as “do not cause us to go into temptation”
Thus we are not to ask don’t lead us into temptation, but rather asking it not to Happen
What does the Word temptation mean
Temptation can mean
• Solicitation to evil
• Testing or trials in order to prove or improve character
Because the request is to be delivered it would seem that this is negative therefore this is most likely Solicitation to Evil
Is this deliverance from Evil or from the evil one
The idea here is do not let us be caugt by the snare of the Devil
To sumerize we are to pray that we not be led into temptation by the Devil
E. Benidiction
Matthew 6:13 KJV 1900
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Matthew 6:13 KJV 1900
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Matthew 6:14 ESV
14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you,
Thine is the Kingdom and the power and the Glory forever Amen
Textual issue
This phrase is not found in many of the early greek manuscripts of this passage
But the kingdom which will come will be a worldwide manifestation of Gods kingdom on earth where his will will be done on earth as it is in heaven
there is a bunch of tecnical stuff with this that I will spare you
There is overwelming evidence that this phrase was not originally part of Matthews gospel, however similar doxologys are found elcewhere in scripture such as
1 Chronicles 29:11 KJV 1900
11 Thine, O Lord, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O Lord, and thou art exalted as head above all.
1 chroni
thefore it is not a phrase that can be used to say the Bible has a probimatic error, because it is not a wrong item just slightly out of place
some newer translations put this phrase in perenthesees
I just wanted to bring this issue to your attention we are not going to deal in depth with it this morning
So Th pattern of prayer is
Worship to God
Looking for the kingdom
Pettition to supply needs
confession
Guidence
Application
Pray without ceasing
Always look for the kingdom
Be praising God not just asking
Prayer Changes things ACT LIKE IT
