A Memorial to the Lamb
Veterans day we remember people who serve and served our country and fight for our freedom and defend our borders.
But memorial day we remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
In April 1863, in Columbus, Mississippi, after decorating graves of her two sons who died representing their beloved south-land, an elderly woman walked to two mounds of dirt at the corner of the cemetery to place memorial flowers there also. “What are you doing?” friends shouted, “Those are the graves of two union soldiers.” Softly that compassionate mother said, “I know. I also know that somewhere in the North, a mother or a young wife mourns for them as we do for ours.”
That loving deed set in motion our celebration which has become known as Memorial Day. We honor the war dead once a year, but their sacrifice is evident every single day of the year! Today, we want to honor the memory of all those who have sacrificed their lives on the altar of freedom. Those thousands of sacrificed lives were not given in vain! Because of their sacrifice, we are free today and have the right to assemble ourselves together and worship our God. Think of the numbers of those who died to preserve the freedoms we enjoy today:
If we do not remember the people that paid their life for the freedom we have than we will not hold it dear we will not appreciate it and we will not take advantage of it and we will give it up to the political winds that blow
Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
We will not be destroyed from the outside if we falter and lose our freedom it will be because we destroyed ourselves. Abraham lincoln
John Adams said “Posterity! you will never know how much it cost the present generation to preserve your freedom! I hope you will make a good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in Heaven that I ever took half the pains to preserve it.”
And in America most young people do not know who hitler was. They do not know what the wars we fought were over.
As a result we are losing our freedom very fast.
And this memorial day for most americans will be about beer and bbq. And for most people there will be no profound sense of gratitude or appreciation.
The Lord knew that the coming generations would appreciate their freedom so he had them set up a memorial day
But when we Look in the bible we see some spiritual memorials he wanted his people to set up to remember what he had done for them.
Here is a memorial day he wanted them to observe once a year for the rest of their lives and he wanted their children to celebrate this memorial day as well.

The Purpose of the Memorial ,,,

And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.
And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever.
Remember this was your independence day
I brought you out of bondage this day this is the day you were set free from being slaves in egypt
You were not always free
Bahamas This holiday, on the first Monday in August, celebrates the emancipation of slaves in the British colonies in 1834
I want you to remember it was me that set you free
Do not forget you were slaves you were in bondage and because of this day what I did here you were freed.
Do not forget your history or you will repeat it and in order not to forget you do this every year as a memorial
Things you should add to your faith
2Pe_1:9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
Never forget what the Lord did for you personally he set me free
And it shall come to pass, when ye be come to the land which the LORD will give you, according as he hath promised, that ye shall keep this service.
And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service?
God designed children to ask questions. Thousands and thousands of them. And he knew this memorial day would have thousands of children in the nation of Israel asking questions why do we do this ?
And you teach them
That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the LORD'S passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed the head and worshipped.
You tell them this is the Lord's passover and it was a sacrifice
Why is that important
You see because those kids were not there
They were not there when the death angel passed through
They did not hear the great cry that came out of egypt when every house woke up to at least one dead person.
They did not know that the reason they were there and the reason their parents lived to see the day was because of the Lord's passover.
They did not see the Lord's miracles.
Those kids did not see the plagues and the crossing of the red sea
But it was an important part of their history and if their kids forgot that special part of history than they would not live like they were different if your children so not believe they are different than the world around them then they will live just like everyone else.
My dad would tell me do not get to chummy with the locals you are not from here you are not like them you are different. You have a different background you have a different up brining you will not understand them and they will not understand you what they believe it means to be a christian and what you believe it means to be a christian are not the same thing.
He wanted them to know that story.
He wanted them to celabrate that memorial.
Now how are we going to do that we are not going to take a lamb and kill it
But you know who this is talking about
The Lord Jesus it is the Lord's passover.
1Co_5:7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:
Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuses you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.
For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.
Where did moses write of christ. Here he wrote of him here and many other places.
The purpose is to pass on what christ has done and for a hundreds of thousands of fathers to tell hundreds of thousands of their sons.
Let me tell you what happened on the dark night when all the egyptians oldest sons died I could see the death angels shadow but it came to the door and passed over.
All i had to do was believe that i was doomed and it was coming and trust the blood of the mab to cover my soul.
Have you told your children about the time you got saved? Do they know the story well?
Do they know that you were not always free that you were once a miserable sinner like they are? Do they know that if it was not for the passover lamb that they would not have a good mom or dad ?
The purpose lest we forget lest a generation forget and than a nation forget. Lest a generation should arsise that knew not joseph nor the works which the Lord did.

The Preparation for the Memorial

Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:
You see they had to take a lamb without blemish
That is, this lamb was to be so perfect.
they were to examining that lamb to make sure there was not a blemish on the skin—
not a flaw, and not a crooked limb.
They were examining the ears to see if the ears had not been torn.
They would at the hooves to see if they had not been slit or battered in any way. They would look inside the mouth of that lamb.
They would examine the eyelids of the lamb and the nostrils of the lamb.
That lamb had to be a spotless lamb, a pure lamb, because that lamb pictured the Lord Jesus. The Bible calls Him “a lamb without blemish and without spot.”
And so we see the character of the lamb
Perfect in every way. Full of beautiful of potential.
That lamb was innocent Like a little baby.
Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:
And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.
Can you imagine that little lamb
📷
Incoent , playful, following the kids around , bleating jumping on the couch
Imagine your son feeding him your daughter giving him water
That lamb jumping up on your lap
And for four days you have this little lamb in your house.
The kids grow to love it.
My kids love animals Noah will cry if a rolie polie gets crushed we moved into my house they were everywhere he would watch them he loved our new house because of all the roly polies.
He wanted them to identify with that lamb
He wanted them to remember in a very real way it was him or I
The innocent lamb died so I could live
he wanted them to see the character of the lamb it was trustworthy
See that it really was innocent.
It really did not deserve to die
He wanted them to consider how great a price was paid.
He wanted them to remember that lamb.
By this time it was more than a story.
Let me ask you is the lamb in your house
Have you prepared your children for the time when they need to take the lamb ?
Have they grown to love the lamb yet?
Or do you keep the lamb outside
Do you keep the lamb at church?
Do you adore the lamb or are you angry with the lamb ?
He wanted the lamb to disrupt the house
He wanted the lamb to change the way they lived
He wanted the lamb to be in the middle of every conversation
They did not have bedrooms than it was one room with the lamb always there.

The Procedure for the Memorial

They were to kill it
And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.
I heard of man who worked in a slaughterhouse and had been slaughtering beef, and they began to process lambs. He said that, when a lamb came through, he wasn’t prepared for it. He lifted the chin, put the knife in, and the blood began to run. That little lamb just looked up at him when the blood spurted on his hand—on the man’s hand—and the lamb began to lick the blood from that man’s hand.
And he said, “I put down my knife and got another job.” He said, “I felt guilty for killing the lamb.”
They had to take that innocent lamb
Why should a little lamb like this be condemned? Why should a little lamb like this be put to death? He was innocent; he had done no wrong.
they take this little lamb that they have been examining, beginning the tenth day, and when they get to the fourteenth day now, in the afternoon, in the evening—really about three o’clock in the afternoon—the father, the head of that household, would take that gentle, woolly, wobbly little lamb—that innocent little lamb—and he would pull up the chin, take a razor-sharp knife, and cut the throat of that little lamb. The blood would come spurting out. That blood would be put in a basin, and that innocent lamb would die.
Why ,“Without shedding of blood [there] is no remission [of sin].”
That shedding of blood pictured that one day God’s Lamb would shed His blood for us. And so the lamb’s blood is shed.
I mean they had to feel guilty it is you or me busy we both cant live either you live or I die or you die and I live
Put its blood on the doorposts
And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.
Took a branch of hyssop dipped it in that blood and stuck it on the doorposts and the top forming a cross
And now every one that walked in the house had to pass through the blood and all inside were saved and all outside were lost
This building, which is situated at the corner of the Groote Market and the Hang, is one of the oldest houses in Rotterdam, besides being one of the most interesting from a historical point of view. When the city was invaded and pillaged by the Spaniards, who in accordance with their usual custom, proceeded to put the inhabitants to the sword, without regard to age or sex, a large number of the leading citizens took refuge within the building, and having secured and barricaded the entrance, they killed a kid and allowed the blood to flow beneath the door into the street; seeing which the soldiery concluded that those inside had already been massacred, and without troubling to force an entry passed on, leaving them unmolested. Here the unhappy citizens remained for three days without food, by which time the danger had passed away, and they were enabled to effect their escape. It is from this incident that the building takes its name.
There is one door and only one and yet ist side are two inside or outside which side are you ?
Have you confessed and put the blood on your door posts or are you trying to keep it a secret ?
There houses were different because of the lamb and they did not mind if the neighbors knew.
They were to eat it
And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.
And eat it all
And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire.
You know, the Bible says, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.” () Lord: that means “Master.” Jesus: that means “Mediator.” Christ: that means “Messiah.” He is Master, Mediator, Messiah.
not make Him your Lord?” you can't make him Lord he is the Lord
Have you fed upon all of the Lamb? Salvation is not a cafeteria line where you say, “I’ll have some saviorhood today, but no lordship, thank you.”
No, they were to feed upon all of the Lamb.
That innocent lamb they were to eat
And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.
With unleavened bread and bitter herbs
Leaven represents sin they were to get all of it out of their house
Bitter herbs represent repentance
It was joyful occasion because they would live
But it was a sobering occasion because of what they did to the lamb.
See many times salvation comes with tears of bitter crying and repentance.
Eat it ready to go
And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD'S passover.
You see when you take the lamb it is just the beginning he is taking you on a journey of growth hardships dessert places through the red sea
And you need to be ready for anything.
And you need strength for the journey so eat the lamb.
It was to give them strength for the journey
Now they were to take this lamb, and after they shed the blood, they were to roast the lamb. That pictures Jesus Christ suffering God’s judgment.
Whenever fire falls on a sacrifice in the Old Testament, it represents the fires of judgment. You see, when Jesus Christ, God’s Lamb, died, He took our hell. Jesus Christ walked the burning corridors of hell for us. Jesus Christ baptized His soul in hell for us, and on the cross He suffered the judgment—the wrath—of God. And God’s wrath was poured out upon that innocent lamb: it was roasted.
They ate it. They were to eat it; they were to consume it.
Can you imagine the aroma in the land of Egypt with a quarter of a million barbequed lambs on at one time? What would the Egyptians have thought? All over the land of Egypt they smelled this roasted flesh. And then these Jews, this bunch of slaves, are now becoming a people. They are now becoming a nation.
They are now being drawn together. They are fellowshipping over a lamb.
Now the lamb is on the inside. When they came out of Egypt, a lamb walked out in them. A lamb was in every one of them. “Christ in you, the hope of glory,”
symbol of Egypt was A venomous serpent. Had you seen the Pharaoh, you would have seen Pharaoh wearing a fixture on his head. He would be wearing a crown-like ornamentation on his head.
And, as they walked out of Egypt, the lamb destroyed that serpent, as we can so well see. He was in them, and they fed upon him; they ate of the lamb.
the communion of the Lamb.
Joh_6:54 Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
Joh_6:55 For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.
Joh_6:56 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.
Does that represent your house ?
Is your house that involved with the lamb ?
Or could they forget what it was all about?
Do you have a memorial to the lamb
How are we going to do that we can not kill a lamb
We do this today with the Lord's supper
We remember what he did and we examine ourselves and we repent.
1Co_11:25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
We eat it we drink it we remember what the lamb did for us

The Place of the Memorial

And it shall come to pass, when ye be come to the land which the LORD will give
And it shall be when the LORD shall bring thee into the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee, a land flowing with milk and honey, that thou shalt keep this service in this month.
And thou shalt shew thy son in that day, saying, This is done because of that which the LORD did unto me when I came forth out of Egypt.
Where were they to keep this feast? Egypt? No
They came out of Egypt, and they came into the wilderness, and they stayed in the wilderness for forty years wandering around in the wilderness. They were headed toward a promised land: the land of Canaan. Now, actually, it should have taken them only a few days to get to Canaan, just a few days; but it took them forty years to get there.
Were they to keep the feast in the wilderness? No,
they were to keep the feast of the Passover; they were to celebrate their redemption in the land of Canaan.
three types of people. There’s the natural man; there’s the carnal man; and there’s the spiritual man. The natural man is lost. The carnal man, he’s lukewarm. And the spiritual man is Spirit-filled.
Now, notice the parallel. The natural man is in Egypt. The carnal man is in the wilderness. The spiritual man is in Canaan.
So many times we use Canaan as a picture of heaven. And people talk about crossing over Jordan and going to the Promised Land: “to Canaan’s fair and happy land, where my possessions lie.”
But Canaan is not a picture of heaven. Canaan is a picture of the Spirit-filled life. There was war in Canaan. There’s not going to be any war in heaven. There was death in Canaan. There’s not going to be any death in heaven. There was sin in Canaan. There’s not going to be any sin in heaven. They came back out of Canaan after they went into it. You’re not going to come out of heaven once you’re there. Canaan is not a picture of heaven, but Canaan is a picture of the Spirit-filled life.
Some of you are in egypt
you can't set up a memorial to the passover lamb because you have never been delivered by it and come out of egypt you are still there.
What do you have to remember and celebrate?
Testimony service comes around everyone gives their testimony they hand you the microphone. Tell us how you got saved. You say something like I have always believed since I was born. No No not right. Wrong . I was in a bad place one day and real depressed and I prayed and pretty soon i got a six pack now I am happy. No no wrong not saved.
How are you going to set up a memorial ? you cant you need to leave egypt and get saved
Some people have come out of Egypt, but they’ve gone into the wilderness.
They haven’t entered into Canaan. They’re saved, but they just are. They’ve come out of Egypt, but they’ve never entered into Canaan
Here’s a man now out in the wilderness. Suppose he decided to disobey the Lord and keep the feast in the wilderness. Suppose he’s getting ready to keep the feast of the Passover. How long did they stay in the wilderness? How long? Forty years. Now, let’s imagine a man had a son thirteen years old, and the dad is out there in the wilderness, and he’s getting ready to keep the feast of the Passover. He’s getting ready to celebrate some.
Now, think of it from this child’s viewpoint. He’s been out there for thirteen years. He hadn’t been in Egypt, and he hadn’t been in Canaan. Do you know what they fed on when they were in the wilderness? What did they eat? Manna. They ate it for breakfast; they ate it for dinner; they ate it for supper.
Now, remember, his dad had eaten something else besides manna; but this kid, he never had anything but manna. This is all he’s eaten for thirteen years. He can tell you five weeks from now what he’s going to have for breakfast: manna. Manna in the morning; manna in the evening; manna at suppertime. It’s just manna, manna, manna.
He was like the kid in the depression used to walk 5 miles to school in in two feet of barefoot uphill both ways with nothing to eat but dirt but instead of dirt it was manna
.
And suppose now they’re out there in the desert, you know, in the wilderness. There are scaly snakes crawling around; cactus; burning, blistering sands; stones, rocks all around. And so they’re getting out there, and the father’s getting ready. The boy’s sitting on a red-hot rock, and the daddy’s sitting on a cactus; and they’re sitting around there getting ready now to do something. And the father is busy about all of this, getting this feast ready, see? Now the boy doesn’t understand it.
That’s the point in verse 8
And thou shalt shew thy son in that day, saying, This is done because of that which the LORD did unto me when I came forth out of Egypt.
. And the boy says, “Now, Dad, what’s all this mean?” And the dad says, “Oh, I’m celebrating.” This kid’s been feeding on manna now for a long time. He’s sick of it. He’s sick of all of this. He’s heard sermons about Canaan, but that’s all. “Oh,” he says, “you’re celebrating, Dad. What are you celebrating?” “Oh,” he says, “I’m celebrating what the Lord’s done for your dad.”
He says, “What’s He done for you, Dad?” I can imagine he’s going to say, “If this is all He’s done for you, don’t you think it’s about time we got back to Egypt?”
You see you cant set up a memorial in the wilderness your kids forget because you live in the wilderness and there is no change in you you do not live for the lamb. You are a carnal hypocrite in the wilderness and your memorial is no good.
You want me to tell you why the devil is getting so many of our children? You want me to tell you why deacons’ children, and preacher’s children, and people who sing in the choir and pay their tithe and come to church twice on Sunday and once in the middle of the week; you want me to tell you why the devil is getting their children, and wrecking and ruining them?
Because they’re trying to celebrate the Passover in the wilderness, and these children see through their superficial lives. The parents have been saved. Yes, they’ve come out of Egypt, all right. But they have never entered into Canaan. And all these poor children have had to feed upon has been manna, manna, manna, manna. And they’ve never fed on the fleshpots of Egypt, nor have they fed on the milk and honey of Canaan. The poor kids are caught in between. And, before long, the allurement of this world gets them.
What's wrong with manna ?
God never meant for them to eat it for forty years. It was to be a temporary thing. It was only to whet their appetite for the land that flowed with milk and honey. If you read the Bible, you’ll find out there was the taste of honey in the manna, just a taste of it. And all it was for was to whet their appetite.
And then, some people, bless God, have gone all the way. They’re not the natural man, they’re not the carnal man; but they’re the spiritual man. They go all the way on over into Canaan, and they are feeding upon milk and honey that the Lord has for them.
That the place to build the memorial
It has to be built in the place you want your kids to be
If you build it in egypt they will stay in egypt if you build it in the wilderness they will stay in the wilderness
But if you build it in the promised land than your kids are there with you and if they go away from it they will have to leave the promised land to get away from the memorial.
Do you remember when you got saved do you rehearse it in the ears of your children ?
Never forget we are free today because of the price the lamb paid.
And Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of Jordan, and take ye up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel:
That this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones?
Then ye shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever.
