LAST WEEK
LAST WEEK
We looked at the historical record of Sin
We looked at the undefeated record of Sin.
We also looked at what the God of the Bible decided to do about it
We looked at the grace that was shown on behalf of our sin
A type of grace that was undeserved, unearned, and unlimited.
NO OTHER GOD OFFERS THIS TYPE OF TRANSACTION
NO OTHER GOD BESTOWS THIS TYPE OF GIFT ON ITS WORSHIPPERS
SO WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?
We left off with this verse:
20 Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, 21 so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
SO WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?
FOR THE CHRISTIAN, THERE IS REST IN THE BIBLICAL PROMISES CONCERNING GRACE.
BUT HOW DO WE MOVE FORWARD KNOWING THAT WE ARE SINFUL, WHILE KNOWING THAT WE ARE FORGIVEN?
NOW THAT SIN IS POWERLESS OVER US
NOW THAT SIN HAS BEEN DISARMED
NOW THAT THERE ARE NO ETERNAL CONSEQUENCES
WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SIN AND THE SINNER?
1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? 3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. 7 For he who has died has been freed from sin. 8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, 9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. 10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. 11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. 13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! 16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? 17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. 18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. 19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.
20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. 22 But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

ROMANS 6:1-
1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?
IF YOU KNEW YOU COULD GET AWAY WITH SIN
WOULD YOU PARTICIPATE?
IF YOU KNEW THERE WERE NO CONSEQUENCES FOR SIN
WOULD YOU PARTICIPATE?
SINCE, WHERE SIN ABOUNDS, GRACE ABOUNDS ALL THE MORE
SHALL WE CONTINUE IN SIN, TO EXPERIENCE MORE OF GOD’S GRACE?
THIS IS HOW SOME HAVE TRANSLATED THIS PRACTICALLY:
IF GOD IS GOING TO FORGIVE US, WHY STRESS OUT ABOUT OUR OWN SIN?
IF GOD IS GOOD, THEN HE HAS TO FORGIVE US . . .
CHURCH, WHEN WE PURPOSEFULLY SIN
This season that I have been in reached an apex this week
Throughout the year, I have been more gracious, merciful, and forgiving.
Someone who tries to give people the benefit of the doubt
One that practices positive intent
Being there for many people through the toughest times.
Leaving the door open for ministry
Leaving the door open for ministry
This has been both good and bad
Because I don’t want to shame anyone or speak ill about them
For this entire year
I want to focus on the good it has produced.
IN A SEASON WHERE I THOUGHT I WAS DEMONSTRATING THE CHARACTERISTICS OF GOD
TRYING TO BE MORE LIKE JESUS
I FOUND MYSELF REFLECTING ON ONE THING
What I have learned in this season is how Longsuffering and Merciful God has been to me.
The Patience
WHEN WE ACTIVELY SIN
The Longsuffering
The Kindness of God
To not give us what I deserve
To not impute on me the wrath that I have earned
I got a fractional taste of what God feels
WHEN WE DON’T PUT UP A FIGHT
To balance anger, hurt, and righteous judgement with peace, healing, and grace
I got a fractional taste of what God feels
When He sends His Son
People believe on Him
But they continue to invest in the things that His Son came to free us from.
Yes God still loves us
When you give people everything you got
Even though they slander you
Even though they spread rumors about you
You continue to forgive them and love them
You continue to stay the course
You turn the other cheek
You continue to love them
Even though they don’t respect you
Even when they take advantage of you
Even when you know you are getting ripped off
Walking with Jesus, and being conformed into His Image is great when we go to Mexico, when we go out into the city to give, when we treat our moms to a mani pedi
But what about when it feels like we are getting crucified by a bunch of sinners you love
What about when all you can say is
“Forgive them for they know not what they do”
CHURCH, WHEN WE PURPOSEFULLY SIN
Yes there is Grace for those moments
WHEN WE ACTIVELY SIN
WHEN WE DON’T PUT UP A FIGHT
And Yes, we are living out a sub standard option that was never meant to be explored.
WE RIP GOD OFF
The very definition of Sin is an archery term
It is to miss the mark
It is to fall short of Godly Expectations
To act upon our own instinct without regard of God’s Word
CONTINUE: EPIMENO
To Stay, To Remain, To Continue
SO, SHOULD WE CONTINUE MAKING SINFUL DECISIONS
SHOULD WE REMAIN IN SINFULNESS
SHOULD WE STAY IN OUR SIN
Because at the end of the day, Grace will abound all the more?
Though that is a good question, Paul poses a better question:
2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? 3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?
2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?
THE QUESTION “DOES GRACE GIVE US PERMISSION TO SIN” IS NOT THE RIGHT QUESTION
THE BETTER QUESTION IS:
“HOW SHALL WE WHO DIED TO SIN LIVE ANY LONGER IN IT?”
If Sin is truly powerless over us
If Sin has truly been disarmed by the Cross of Jesus Christ
Then we are technically untouchable by Sin
We are dead to Sin
Sin and the Christian have no relationship with each other because of what Jesus did on the Cross.
So where do we go from here?
24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.
4 Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious,
Because we have been saved
Because we are now sons and daughters of the King
We are to live righteously
We are to live into the Power of the Resurrection.
We are to know our right standing before God, and what it means to be saved from our sins
What do I mean?
3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Romans 6:3
MANY CHRISTIANS HAVE BEEN BAPTIZED
MANY HAVE TAKEN THAT STEP OF FAITH
ONE PASTOR, PUT IT THIS WAY:
“DO THEY UNDERSTAND THE BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE OF BAPTISM, OR ARE WE JUST GETTING THEM WET AND CHECKING OFF A BOX?”
PAUL SAYS:
“DO YOU NOT KNOW, THAT THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN BAPTIZED INTO CHRIST, WERE BAPTIZED INTO HIS DEATH?”
WE WERE BURIED WITH HIM
THOUGH BAPTISM INTO DEATH
We were submerged into the details of His Death
Acquainting with the ultimate price He paid for us
But not staying in the Grave that Sin put us in
BUT RISING UP FROM THE DEAD BY THE GLORY OF THE FATHER
THAT WE WOULD WALK IN THE NEWNESS OF LIFE
This means we are not futile
This means we are not worthless
This means we have purpose
This means there is something new for us to walk in
WHAT DOES THIS LOOK LIKE?
5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.
Romans 6:5-
CHURCH, THE PERSON WHO HAS PUT THEIR FAITH IN JESUS IS UNIQUE
THEY HAVE BEEN UNITED TOGETHER IN THE LIKENESS OF HIS DEATH
Our Old self has been crucified with Christ
That the Body of sin might be done away with
That we should no longer be slaves of sin
That our old ways would cease to exist
T
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
THIS IS THE NEWNESS OF LIFE
THIS IS THE RESURRECTED LIFE
THIS IS WHAT ITS LIKE TO LIVE INTO THE LIKENESS OF THE RESURRECTION.
WHAT HAPPENED IN THE SUMMER OF 2002 CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER.
THOUGH IT MAY SEEM LIKE A DEATH TO SOME, IT ACTUALLY BROUGHT ME TO LIFE.
JESUS SAID:
10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
SATAN HAS BEEN RIPPING US OFF
By keeping us comfortable in our Sin
By keeping us dead in our trespasses
By entertaining us in the venue of Sin
He steals our time,
He kills our vision
He destroys our reputation
BUT JESUS CAME THAT YOU MAY HAVE LIFE
THAT YOU MAY RISE FROM THE DEADNESS OF YOUR SIN
THAT YOU MAY LIVE INTO THE NEWNESS OF LIFE
THAT YOU MAY HAVE LIFE, AND HAVE IT TO THE FULL
HAVE IT MORE ABUNDANTLY
THIS IS SUCH GREAT NEWS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE YET TO MAKE A DECISION FOR CHRIST
BUT WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR THOSE OF US WHO ARE ALREADY FOLLOWING JESUS?
Church, the counter weight to the truth that God loves you
Is the fact that Satan hates your guts
He will do anything to keep you from confronting your sin
He will whisper lies to you
He will even justify sin in clever ways
You can sin, as long as its like this
You can sin, but make sure no one finds out
You can sin, just don’t tell anyone, this will make you look weak.
THIS IS WHERE SATAN WANTS YOU TO RESIDE
The greatest lie that He tells is that you dont have to change
That you can stay sinful
That you can continue to sin
That this is how you were created
Carry on, and keep sinning your little heart out
Because where Sin abounds Grace abounds all the more.
LOOK AT VERSE 7
7 For he who has died has been freed from sin.
THIS YEAR HAS BEEN TOUGH FOR ME
I’VE SEEN A LOT OF DEFEAT AND SOME VICTORY
COUNSELED MANY THROUGH
This week, I got to experience a glimpse into the heart of God.
This season that I have been in reached an apex this week
Throughout the year, I have strived to be more gracious, merciful, and forgiving.
Someone who tries to give people the benefit of the doubt
One that leads with positive intent
Being there for many people through the toughest times.
Leaving the door open for ministry
This has been both good and bad
IN A SEASON WHERE I THOUGHT I WAS DEMONSTRATING THE CHARACTERISTICS OF GOD
TRYING TO BE MORE LIKE JESUS
I FOUND MYSELF REFLECTING ON ONE THING
What I have learned in this season is how Longsuffering and Merciful God has been to me.
The Patience
The Longsuffering
The Kindness of God
To not give me what I deserve
To not impute on me the wrath that I have earned
THOUGH I LEARNED THIS ON A PERSONAL LEVEL
I ALSO GOT A GLIMPSE AS THE ROLES FLIPPED
I got a fractional taste of what God feels
When He sends His Son
People believe on Him
But they continue to invest in the things that His Son came to free us from.
When you give people everything you got
They slander you
They spread rumors about you
You continue to forgive them and love them
You continue to stay the course
You turn the other cheek
You continue to love them
Even though they don’t respect you
Even when they take advantage of you
Even when you know you are getting ripped off
YOU DON’T QUIT ON THEM
I DON’T KNOW HOW I DID IT
BUT ONE THING IS TRUE, IT HURT.
BUT IT TAUGHT ME SOMETHING ABOUT THE HEART OF GOD.
Walking with Jesus, and being conformed into His Image is great when we go to Mexico, when we go out into the city to give, when we treat our moms to a mani pedi
But what about when it feels like you are getting crucified by a bunch of sinners you love
What about when all you can say is
“Forgive them for they know not what they do”
This gives new meaning
13 Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.
THE NEXT TIME YOU COME ACROSS A DECISION TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE GRACE AND MERCY OF GOD
JUST REMEMBER, THAT THERE IS A BETTER OPTION
REMEMBER, THAT GOD WANTS TO SET YOU FREE
REMEMBER, THAT HE LOVES YOU
MAYBE THIS WILL STOP US FROM RIPPING GOD OFF AND TREATING GRACE AS A PERMISSION SLIP TO SIN.
