God’s Response to Wickedness
Is there such a thing as “too sinful” for salvation?
Is there such a thing as “too sinful” for salvation?
· Why did God save Nineveh and destroy Sodom and Gomorrah?
· “The two angels” (v1): This is a continuation from the narrative in chapter 18.
Three men – one was the Lord other two “men” – were angels
Then the Lord said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is very grave,
· Lot’s perspective seems to support their bad reputation.
and said, “My lords, please turn aside to your servant’s house and spend the night and wash your feet. Then you may rise up early and go on your way.” They said, “No; we will spend the night in the town square.”
Turn aside
Rise up early
Go on your way
Their actions speak for themselves
But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old, all the people to the last man, surrounded the house. And they called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know them.”
“…that we may know them” – have sex with them.
Their desire for wickedness was ravenous.
“But before they lay down”
Their whole culture was driven by immorality
FOUR ways of describing that every man in the city was wicked.
Verse 8-9: we see the face of true immorality.
Lot’s (wicked and immoral) offer of his two virgin daughters
Was rejected by the men of Sodom
Immoralities deepest desire is greater immorality, not just more immorality.
God’s response to wickedness is personal.
God’s response to wickedness is personal.
· He sent angels there
· This argues against Deism.
· God distinguished the wicked from the righteous.
There is a time when you are beyond God’s grace and will face God’s wrath.
There is a time when you are beyond God’s grace and will face God’s wrath.
· We do not know exactly why God saved Nineveh and destroyed Sodom (we are not God)
· We do know that the wickedness in Sodom (and surrounding region) was great.
· 2 Peter 2:6

Why was Lot even in a place like this?

Lot was still considered “righteous” according to scripture (2 Pet. 2:7-8)
So, the question becomes, “How can a righteous person find themselves living in the middle of such great wickedness?”
Maybe the more concerning thing is that it IS POSSIBLE.
Immorality will aggressively reject any attempt at righteousness.
Lot tried to appeal to their reason “They have come under the shelter of my roof”
Didn’t say “don’t do this wicked thing”
We will do worse to you than these men…
Immorality becomes a way of life
And therefore, tough to leave.
Lot’s daughters were engaged to “men of the city”
Lot lingered (had to be drug out by the hand)
Contrast between LIVING for God and just SURVIVING
Abraham – Though faulted, Abraham was changing the culture by bringing God to the places he went, (circumcision to all people in his household)
Shows how God penetrates cultures of people as we follow Him in His plan.
Lot – Though righteous, we see the contrast to Abraham where Lot was simply “surviving” and become effected by the wickedness of the culture where he was.
Lesson here can be summarized:
Either you are changing the world for God or the world is changing you.
Either you are changing the world for God or the world is changing you.
