I Want to Be Blessed

Matthew 5:1–3 ESV
1 Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Introduction: What do you think makes you happy? This text before us is the Master Jesus teaching the principles of Christian character under pressure. As Jesus introduces what we know as the Beatitudes, He describes the nature of the Kingdom in contrast to the burdens of the world. He invites You and me to view these burdens as a part of life.
DT: To experience the fulfillment of Blessedness we must be willing to endure burdens that come with life.
Aim: We will trust Jesus’ promises are true as we face and endure burdens.

We Must Accept Our Own Limitations (v. 3)

Define poor in spirit- It is an idiom which means we are incapable of doing anything on our own. It means to subject ones life to the authority and power of God. Plainly, the poor in spirit are those who have confidence only in God.
We need God
We recognize a need for God. We may struggle with our spiritual position in life. This struggle is a reminder that we are incapable of strength without God.
We need God’s Word
To Guide Us
To Comfort Us
We need God’s Provisions
We need God’s Protection
from the Attacks of satan
from ourselves
Application:
Lose your self sufficiency. Lose your moments of arrogance. Lose your overconfidence. Be poor in spirit. Totally rely on the power of God.
You can’t deliver yourself from sin
You can’t deliver yourself from struggles
You can only be delivered through the power of God
