John 5:2
1 After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the sheep gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porticoes.
3 In these lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, and withered, waiting for the moving of the waters;
4 for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool and stirred up the water; whoever then first, after the stirring up of the water, stepped in was made well from whatever disease with which he was afflicted.
Bethesda - House of Mercy
North of Jerusalem- near the Temple
Not sure if this a miraculous occurrence or legend.
Pool was fed by a couple lakes, but it is believed that it was also fed by an intermittent spring, and when this spring water would flow, it had medicinal properties.
Man was ill for 38 years.
6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been a long time in that condition, He said to him, “Do you wish to get well?”
John
Man said that he had no-one to put him in the water.
8 Jesus said to him, “Get up, pick up your pallet and walk.”
The man became well immediately.
It was the Sabbath.
Jews told him he couldn’t carry his pallet.
8 “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 “Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
10 but the seventh day is a sabbath of the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you.

How was this their takeaway?
Jesus said in
27 Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.
The man threw Jesus under the bus.
The guy who healed me told me to pick up my pallet and walk
14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “Behold, you have become well; do not sin anymore, so that nothing worse happens to you.”
We don’t know that the man’s illness was due to his sin, but we know that there are worse things than illness if there is not repentance.
Charles Spurgeon writes:
Repentance is a discovery of the evil of sin, a mourning that we have committed it, a resolution to forsake it. It is, in fact, a change of mind of a very deep and practical character, which makes the man love what once he hated, and hate what once he loved.
“Cheap grace is the grace we bestow on ourselves. Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline, Communion without confession...Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ, living and incarnate.” Diedrich Bonhoeffer

Spurgeon said: “Sin and Hell are married unless repentance proclaims the divorce.”
The man told the Jews it was Jesus.

Jews were out to persecute Jesus.
17 But He answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working.”
Now they wanted to kill him.
The Son can only do what he sees the Father doing.
20 “For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him greater works than these, so that you will marvel.
21 “For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes.
22 “For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son,
23 so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.
John 5:20-
Jesus goes on to talk about the two resurrections of the dead.
Either resurrection of life or resurrection of judgement.
Then he gives us some bonafides
Why you should trust Christ.
1. John the baptist testified about him.
33 “You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth.
John 5:
2. His works testify about him.
36 “But the testimony which I have is greater than the testimony of John; for the works which the Father has given Me to accomplish—the very works that I do—testify about Me, that the Father has sent Me.
3. The Father testifies about Jesus
37 “And the Father who sent Me, He has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time nor seen His form.
John 5:
38 “You do not have His word abiding in you, for you do not believe Him whom He sent.
john 5:
The Scriptures testify about Christ.
39 “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me;
45 “Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is Moses, in whom you have set your hope.
46 “For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote about Me.
47 “But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”
If you seek the truth, you will find Jesus.
If you seek the truth, you will find Jesus.
The Quo-ran led him to be a Christian.

He was called the Word of God, Spirit of God, The Christ.
He is alive today and will come back.
He went to his teacher and asked how did God create the universe. He asked is the Word of God a creation or creator?
Answer: not either. He knew the Christians called Jesus the Son of God.
Teacher: show me his wife.
Answer: God can speak without tongue, Hear without ears, see without eyes. If he can do these, he can have a son without a wife.
Confused, he prayed that God would show him the truth. Opened his Quo-ran to 10-94. If you have doubt ask those that read the Bible.
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
