Sports story

Today’s sports story is about a football player named J.J. Watt. He plays for the Houston Texans. A couple of years ago in 2017 Houston, Texas was hit with hurricane Harvey, do you know what a hurricane is?
A hurricane is a storm that comes from the ocean. very strong winds blow. People who live near the ocean are told to leave their homes because all the rain could cause major flooding. Hurricanes can be very scary.
That’s exactly what happened in Houston. It rained so much there was a lot of water everywhere.
J.J. Watt was very sad about what happened to Houston. Then just a few weeks later, he injured his leg in a football game, and he was out for the season.
Those are big problems for J.J. and his team, and the city of Houston. J.J could have sat and taken it easy. After all he was injured. He could have waited for someone else to do something. Do you think that’s what he did?(response)
No, J.J. chose to be unstoppable. He helped by setting a goal to raise 200,000 to help people and to give 100,000 of his own money. He dedicated a lot of time to helping people who lost their homes and didn’t have food and water
of his own money
J.J set a goal and came up with a plan. Then he was unstoppable. Just like with Nehemiah , J.J. had no idea just how big his plan was going to be
Do you know what happened because J.J. chose to be unstoppable? He raised way more than $200,000. People gave 41 million dollars. It’s important for us to never give up. And with God’s help we can accomplish great things.

Bible Story:

Well we are going to hear a little more about Nehemiah tonight. Are you guys ready?
Up to this point things are going pretty well for Nehemiah. After lots of prayer, he set a goal to rebuild the wall of Jerusalem. God helped Nehemiah to come up with a plan, and a lot of people got to work. They were making good progress. In fact they were building the wall very quickly because they were working together.
Just when the building was going well for Nehemiah and the Israelites, trouble started. A couple of enemies showed up to discourage them. They started to make fun of them and calling them names. Have you ever had someone make fun of you and what you were doing?(group response) It hurts, doesn’t it?
But Nehemiah lived out our Mega point. Let’s say it together. I WILL CHOOSE TO BE UNSTOPPABLE
First, Nehemiah prayed. He asked God to help them. Then he had the people keep building the wall until the wall was halfway done. They were working hard, and their hard work showed.
Do you thing these enemies let things go? No they didn’t. Next they threatened to bring an army to fight the Israelites. The Israelites got scared and started to complain. But Nehemiah knew that God would help them to be unstoppable. He told the people, “don’t be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome.”
Nehemiah and the Israelites were brave. They faced difficult opponents. They got tired. They kept working in a difficult, high pressure situation. And Nehemiah and the Israelites finished the main part of the wall and it only took them 52 days to build the wall. Because they chose to be unstoppable.
I want you to think about a difficult situation you may be facing
Maybe your facing a mean person. Someone who wants to hurt you, or make fun of you just like the enemies who made fun of the Israelites?
Maybe your facing a bad situation like when the Israelites had to keep working even though they were scared. Maybe you’ve had to move, or someone you love is sick and you don’t know what to do.
Or maybe you just want to quit. I Think the Israelites may have felt tired. Maybe they even wanted to quit. Maybe you have to do something you don’t want to do . Like chores at home or finishing a sport that isn’t much fun like you thought it would be. Maybe it’s being nice to someone who isn’t nice to you.
Who remembers what Nehemiah did first when the enemies showed up?(group response) He prayed and asked God to be with Him. And that’s what were going to do tonight. INVITATION TO PRAY
Encourage them to wear their bracelets. To remind themselves to watch, stand fast in the faith and to be brave and to be strong.
One more thing, after the Israelites finished building the wall, they marched on top of the wall all the way to the temple to celebrate. Can we maybe stand one last time at our V.B.S. and shout and celebrate all God has done for us this week.
